This looks like a 6pt I passed several years ago...it was 2 mins into the legal gun season and raining like mad...It was the one the neighbors brother shot...I found it dead after season in my stream less than 70 yrds from his stand..".didn't look hit" So he never bothered looking. So the genetics survived...6 points

Never figured I would buy myself a diamond, but............. Diamond Prism Right now the DL is at 26" and feels short ( Just for Bowguy 1, I put an arrow in this time when I drew it back ), I really think 27" will be spot on. DW is 40#'s going up to 55#'s. No d-loop either so that has to be done. Feels good in my hands. If we didn't have a water main break so the land owner is here working, I would have a pic or two for the "1st Shot" thread.6 points

We all have a right to hunt for our own unique reasons. What we don't have a right to do is to dictate to others what their reasons for hunting has to be.5 points

OK - I understand that you may be upset that you lost the right to hunt the land, but why is leasing any different than limiting who may hunt private lands? Most landowners don't open the door to everyone and to argue that those that lease are less of a conservationist than those with free access seems like it requires a major assumption. I don't really see leasing as any different than selectively deciding who the owner lets hunt his/her land, except the owner is paid. We have exclusive permission on a parcel that I offered to lease (but the owner refused payment) and kill both bucks and plenty of does. I would not hunt it any differently if I leased it or owned it frankly.4 points

You're either capable of hitting what you shoot at, and fully confident that you can do so, or you're not. Take the shot accordingly. Measuring precise ranges, angles, and dangles become excuses if you miss. I've missed a lot of deer over the years because I'm human. It's about doing the best you can do.4 points

Several posters here, including myself, affirmed his right to voice his opinion. WE, on the same note, have a right to criticize his actions. YOU are the one who is pissing and moaning now. You hypocritical liberals make me sick. OH, excuse me...You no longer call yourselves liberals..You are PROGRESSIVES now, because you feel that term is more positive , and you hope that it draws attention away from your desire to take money from the people who EARNED it and give it to the ones who don't deserve it.4 points

Nothing wrong with killing fawns and yearlings IMO. It's probably more beneficial to the rest of the herd to take out the weakest link that is most vulnerable to disease, predation, and starvation. A good number of those fawns and yearlings may not make it to see their second birthday anyhow, while the next older class bucks have already proven they know how to make it through a season or two. Not really beneficial to take out a proven survivor, only to let the weaklings that will be the first to drop dead over browse a property before they die anyhow. That just takes away from the rest of the remaining healthy herd and makes it harder on them as they head into the most stressing winter months. So even though I personally prefer to kill a nice buck of at least 2 1/2 year old or better at this point of my hunting, there was a time when I would kill the first deer I saw no matter how small it was. They don't make for the most jaw dropping field photos, but I've got an album full of them anyhow and have no issue with guys killing fawns and yearlings. It does more for the overall health of thedeer herd opposed to the guy who eats his tags year after year waiting on a mega-buck.3 points

Why do people always blame the neighbors? Thats is a cop out, shoot what you want but realize those neighbors don't kill all of the deer like is imagined. If they did no one would ever get trail cam pics of good ones and no one would kill anything bigger than a spike. Hunt your hunt.3 points

For any new bow hunter I would highly recommend a range finder. There are some quality rangefinders for not much more than 100$. If you will never shoot beyond 20-25yds it's not as important with modern bows but if you plan on shooting beyond that it is essential. Judging range is a learned skill that is often messed up every by the most experienced. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

At least 3, possibly 4? Even the "experts" are just guessing. Without having history with the deer I know that I can't age them confidently.3 points

Went out at 6 am this morning in my buddies Nitro bass boat onto Lake Erie. Weird wind again and quite choppy even inside the breakwall. Jigged some crayfish and 3" Gulp minnows. Buddy caught 3 smallies , I caught one small one and daughter blanked. Tried to get out to fish the structures out at beginning of the river but boat kept coming out of the water. So we checked out the worlds largest rubber duck. Holy smokes , people on land snapping pics , kayaks everywhere and this thing is huge. Looking forward to fall and fishing the mouth of the Cattaragus for steelies Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

Bucks I don't care every year we see pics of some mighty fine buck and big doe ....The cams may be seeing more than the recover pics show...but that just means they are getting older or hit by vehicles. All the comparison we see to other states is just ...foolish We should all be happy with what NYS has and proud that in most instances...we are seeing this due to volunteer restraint2 points

Thanks guys. Backstrap was from a nice sized doe. Did a cast iron searing quick and finished on the grill. Cooked until about 130ºf and sat for about 10 minutes. Came out a nice med rare. Not pictured corn on cob, fresh bread, and roasted garlic.2 points

Oh man if they would just lay those backstraps by my tree I swear I'd let deer walk!2 points

He was 83 years old and suffering with Alzheimer's disease. A very funny guy in movies such as "Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles", "The Producers", and "The Frisco Kid". He was a class act who knew how to get a laugh just by laughing at himself. RIP, my friend. Be with Gilda.2 points

based on I guess rack size, neck, body in general proportion to the legs, and a couple other things i'll say 3.5 years old (or as larry says he will be this fall). some DEC staff and field techs are very good. others not so much. 4.5+ year old bucks take more than just luck to get to that age. things like how much muscle in the shoulders or thickness in his upper neck doesn't matter much. once he's juiced up on testosterone and hard antlered he'll look even meaner and a bit different.2 points

Hahaha ..you guys kill me...every single one of you have been judging "racks" and aging(if smart) since puberty your all gold miners....2 points

After 2.5 it's a HUGE crap shoot unless, as posted by WNY bowhunter you have a history. The only real issue with that is that a buck can change drastically from year to year and keeping very accurate photo files isn't something most are going to do. Speculation is for gold miners......2 points

Core Just a suggestion, if you are going to buy land, hold out for some that is close enough to home to hunt for an afternoon and holds good quantity of deer. Even at $500/acre, you won't be happy if you spend 10s of thousands on a parcel that isn't good hunting and reasonably close to home - 2 hour drives back and forth for a one day hunt won't cut it. Keep an eye for something in 8H (I think you live in 8H or 8F) and don't be in a rush. Something will pop up. IMO.\ While agree that we should do what we can to make our hunting areas what we want them to be, I am pretty happy with the lands, opportunities and diversity in NY. I could do without the ridiculous taxes and bloated state government.2 points

TRIAL....I have not "hunted" any other states .That said I have been in nearly every state South And west of BuY and lived in a couple.I'm not talking airports. I also have access to media. So I know of what you are getting at. Yes other States not all nor most have some crazy big game...also completely different topography and land usage.there agriculture, soil mineral content, and population dispersal, and deer #,s are different. Mast trees and weather is different. Their DNR's are totally different. Even the death from disease in herds are different. All these things and hunters make a herd what it is So I stick by it's foolish to want changes based on comparisons of bone inches in other states. NYSs biggest problem at the moment is the population attitude...NYer's have a reputation of wanting "It bigger ,better, and yesterday". Our hunters in many instances are the same. I personally find it foolish that many can't see the real change that's been happening and be proud that we are doing this our selves and keep getting the word out it's working the best it can, getting better every year. I may not have hunted other states...but I can see the forest through the trees.2 points
-
I really have never had any interest in a deer's age. I generally go by, "Is he big enough or not?" Once he is in packages, I could care less about how old he is ....... lol. One thing that I will say with certainty is that that deer is old enough for me to shoot.2 points
-
Never thought I would see a day when my plan for the season was get a doe for the freezer, then go after a nice buck ( to me, that's a good 6 or up ) for a few weeks, then back to just getting more meat in the freezer. This is also the first time I have ever had 4 tags though. But, I love to hunt, and I do it for the meat. A nice buck would just be icing for me. I would rather someone hunt for the horns then shoot a small deer that still has traces of it's spots.2 points
-
You'll probably have a couple of seconds to make the shoot/don't shoot decision. You're either confident that you can connect with the shot or you're not. Practice builds confidence.2 points

One thing I have done to help get a lot better at estimating range is while I am hiking/scouting I pick something like a tree, rock, or a bush make an estimate, and then pace it off with big steps like stoneam2006 mentioned. If I was in a stand, I would have a range finder because the angle will add to the distance. I also agree 100% with philoshop as far as not getting to caught up into being overly precise. Usually, when you over think something, something goes wrong.2 points

I don't know for sure but this is probably a few years old. It is really great. Very smooth but you know what your sipping. I have a collection called "the library of old". I always add to it. It's due for some library card punching. I usually only tap into it for accomplishments but a couple years back I added quite a bit that are ready and really nice to surprise a dinner with.2 points

Voluntary restraint is the only answer to seeing & harvesting BBs, not DEC regulations (AR, doe-only, etc). The restraint philosophy has so many "speed bumps" it's almost impossible to implement. That is unless you have several hundred acres of land you own/lease and all the surrounding neighboring hunters follow the same principle. Sure everyone has seen more & more large acreage farms sold off into mini-farmettes. Difficult to micro-manage a 30 acre hunting parcel when some of the neighbors are the "brown is down" type of hunters. Throws your restraint principles out the window. IMHO, micro-managing your hunting area(s) for sound deer mgmt principles is going to produce at least a better opportunity for BB sightings. Whether you go all in with QDM, harvest some does or just let the young bucks walk, it'll all help! Now if you can get your neighbors onboard, so much the better. God bless you if you're satisfied with shooting 2-3yo bucks or strictly a meat hunter, but don't complain about not seeing any mature BBs! To each his/her own, but it really should be about the hunting experience and not some measureable stat like inches, pounds, harvest #s, etc. And my pet peeve - the phrase Trophy Hunting. Like to get its' useage banned! It has so many undesirable implications and negative influences on the hunter's mentality, all of which are bad! Don't know if you're still with us, but sorry Joe - The NYS BB club feeds into &/or off of this phenomenon. Sort of sets NY hunters up for disappointment. Okay, must admit I do drool some and am a little envious when I'm occasionally redirected to the website and view those brutes.2 points

NY is an underperformer on so many levels that what we do produce is astounding. That said, a 120" deer for many hunters in NY is a lifetime buck. I am not going to be happy with what NYS has when we know a lot of it is caused by hunter culture and legislative/governmental deficiencies. I think it is wrong to be content with what we have if you believe that more is possible. Makes me feel like Papist - we're just lemmings in the scenario to leftist officials and there's not much to do but take it. Remain active, but just be aware that efforts might not go the way you want it.2 points

Many boaters are clueless today . My folks built a cottage on Port Bay in 1,959 , I grew up there every weekend and two weeks each summer . if you saw a guy fishing you gave him room or if you could not you throttled back , same for skiers , you gave them room . iv been going out in boats since '59 ( ok I was one then) but you get the idea . Today's boaters I call grinning idiots , they swamp you, come to,close to,your kid in the water as you prepair to,pull, them skiing and smile and wave as they pass. They have no,idea what the " stand down boat means " let alone who has the right away. A few years back we almost got hit by a giant boat on Lake Ontario , they came from behind off to my left , only two, boats out there , my daughter started to yell, I looked and turned the wheel just in time really . i started to draw my .40 cal,Glock but commen sense and my wife stopped me . I did make note of the boats name and spent two summers searching marinas for,it. im a patient man with lots of free time and a cord less drill ......2 points
