My daughter and I were out squirrel hunting this morning when she said "dad deer." These 2 fawns come out about 12 yrds in front of us and this one walked right up to us. My daughter was shaking so bad I could hear her teeth rattling. When she got around the tree she was on my daughters side and licker her boot before running off. This is what it's all about her eyes are still the size of dinner plates and can't stop talking about it.https://vimeo.com/181511473 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk7 points

A few turkey vultures in field as I was parking. Catching lots of day time pics now. Last week , not one. Bucks seem to have shed velvet in last week. Nice 2.5 year old who has some body to him. Hoping daughter gets the hammer drop on him. Turkeys milled in the apples for a bit. . Truly liking Cabela's cams (2) for $120 each . Fast trigger speed , reaches out, battery life and pics. Can view pics on cam and format as well but using card reader on iPhone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk5 points

About half the bucks I have on camera are still in velvet, the other half are hard horn. This guy is half in and half out. If you look carefully, you can see the hunks of velvet coming off the antlers.5 points

I hunt any and all times I can get out there. Apart from a blizzard, there are no bad times. Anything can happen. I arrowed a nice 10 pointer last year when all conditions said no way5 points

there's a lot of "oh sh*t" deadly shots out there.....I once shot a buck in the lower part of his back leg, got the femoral artery and he was dead within seconds, but I never want to do that again.3 points

I don't own land for hunting, I'd rather spend my money on other things......quite honestly there are thousands of acres of public land available for me to hunt on, I've never had the need to knock on a door for a place to hunt..........with that being said, I have zero problem with anyone who owns their own land posting the sh*t out of it and keeping everyone else off of it, and I don't even care the reason, whether it be leasing, for themselves and family, an anti hunter, a tree hugger, whatever, it's none of my business. It's like me wanting to use someones brand new car because I can't afford one or choose not to buy one, it doesn't work like that in my book.....I don't have a swimming pool, but you do, can I bring the kids over whenever I want and use it??3 points

AC Delco on eBay for $24...120 batteries. Lowes utilitech (hard to find right now). 100 for $24. Harbor freight orange batteries with coupon/sale is 4.99 for 24 batteries. All else fails the dollar general alkaline work well for the $$$. No point in overpaying for name brand. Not all, but some house brands will compete close to the name brands. Instead of spending $0.30 per battery, you spend $0.195 and get 90% of the lifespan of the Duracell or energizer alkaline. You know how many batteries I need to change my cams out once? 300. You better believe I am going to find a cheap reliable source of power, lol. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

Good for you, my wife and I use to do that. Id drive and just start turning down random roads. We did that I'm my mustang one day yrs back in the spring. We were down past Honeoye lake and turned up a road that turned into a rough gravel road and some left over snow. I almost turned around but figured it wouldn't last long and it did. I got a few chips in the paint that day ( stupid me).3 points

When you have 6+ trailcams and change batteries a couple times each year, battery cost can sting! I've been buying Duracell AA batteries in lots of 100 for less than $.30/battery on eBay for a couple of years now. Here's one example, but they can be found for even cheaper. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pack-of-100-Duracell-Coppertop-Duralock-AA-Size-Alkaline-Batteries-EXP-2025-/322131783349?hash=item4b008ceeb5:g:PdQAAOSwBLlVQTr5 They're not old batteries either, as the expiration is 2025. If you prefer lithium, they have those too! I use to buy them at Walmart, because that was the cheapest place that I could find, for $.58/battery + tax. So buying on eBay is less than half of that! I just ordered some from eBay, as I like to put in fresh batteries before all the rut-action starts!2 points

I would gladly have some of my tax dollars go towards a program like that, when you sit back and consider that most of us pay for other programs that the vast majority of us will never benefit from, why not this as well?........if you're paying taxes, you've been paying for other people to do things all along......School taxes, how many people no longer have kids, but keep having to pay? only a handful of kids get to play sports and other school activities, but we all pay for that.....public assistance, aka welfare, we're paying for that.......the list is endless of things we all pay for but most likely will never reap the benefits of......2 points

I get the whole overpopulation, over browsing, disease thing, but it's private land...case closed. I think the State trying some type of incentive program for landowners to open their property to hunters is a great thing.....and it may work, but other then that it's a dead end road.2 points

After post season scouting, we decided to make some small changes. So on the lake property i did three new natural ground blinds and on the farm property two new blinds. And since I'll have my grandson actually hunting this year, made them all comfortable and large enough for two. More so than any deer I've killed myself, I look forward to being with him when he gets his first!2 points

Cutting for the best tune makes sense but I never understood the need to cut it as close to the rest as is possible to avoid overhang for more maneuverability. The majority of the arrow is still way out in front before drawing and typically in that position when maneuvering to position for a shot. I try not to have to move around while at full draw.2 points

as long as your bow arm is still bent and your other arm to your elbow is inline with the arrow then you're probably good. slightly too long and you'll have big movement of the floating pin on target. too short and you'll have less movement but the floating will be much faster. your wing span with held out arms not overly stretching divided by 2.5 usually works pretty well. always round down to the nearest half inch though.2 points

What really brings all of this stuff home is when you have been around long enough in the same area to have experienced better times in terms of hunting access. When I was a kid, I could walk the ridges all day long and never see a posted sign. There was no such thing as begging for access. The land in our valley was in huge wooded parcels owned by farmers who actually welcomed hunters. They had no money, need, or time for buying and maintaining posted signs for keeping people out. Who ever thought that hunting access would ever be a problem. Having been raised in those times makes the current situation of posted signs and leases and high fences even more traumatic to a hunter that has known times where that problem was simply unimaginable. Not all change is good.2 points

I tagged along with a couple of other forum members. I don't shoot a bow... Yet. Awesome place you have there. And that Hawkeye breakfast sammich was outstanding to start my day. No doubts by spring I'll own a bow and be shooting there. Saw quite a few people I also knew thru work and friends. Glad I went today.2 points

Damn Biz that's looks freaking good. Holy Lord, I've never had one before and my neighbor made them yesterday and today. Today was much stronger and wow. Stupid me switched to beer before dinner. My living room is moving now that it's all over. Rob hit the nail on the head. I'm thinking about laying on the floor but it won't stop moving. I'm watching Impractical Jokers too. If you've never seen it, OMG it's hilarious. I could see 4 of us from this site doing the pranks these guys do.2 points

I'm seeing headshots a few times n imo it's way too risky unless you rope em first. Before anyone tells me how great they shoot, things happen beyond our control. Deer move, especially their heads, an unseen vine or branch can be hit n cause deflection, tree can sway n most likely is, etc etc. we don't need bad press, first deer pic of a blown off jaw will go viral, it's happened w hunting type things way too often lately. Besides the moral implications we owe it to the game n each other to take the best shot w lowest odds of crippling or injuring2 points

the longer your arrow the weaker the dynamic spine will be , a shorter arrow will be a stiffer arrow AS long as it is the right spine for your bow to begin with (if your arrow is under spined for your bow it will never be stiff enough) . I will tune my arrows to my bow, I start out with a longer than needed arrow and I will cut a 1/4 to1/2 inch off at a time on the nock end until I find that length that tunes extremly easy from my bow. and as a rule of thumb a stiff arrow will always tune better than a weak arrow.2 points

I used a Keller pendulum for years before going to the HHA slider. I agree with Lawd, I like the unobstructed sight view. But for your set up rob, I think you will be ok. Just yank the other pins out and go with it. I never use the slide on my sight. I just know where to aim at different yardages after many hundreds of arrows.1 point

Jeesh . You guys all complain how long it takes to get your mounts back. It's taken me 29 years to get mine. Oh , wait. I'm still awaiting something worthy of getting mounted1 point

I tuck it in a little tighter to the shoulder these days, pretty much straight up the front leg.....years back I always aimed about 4 inches or so behind the front leg, once I took a closer look at a deer's anatomy I concluded I was aiming too far back.1 point

Lengthened my draw length another 1/2" today. Can't really say it's related to this, but this is the tightest group I've ever shot at 30 yards (pin sight is off, haven't bothered re-aligning since my peep was adjusted). This is with the "decimator" arrows, which dicks/field and stream had for $30 recently and which are, in fact, $20 for six right now. I have noticed if I ever get flyers they seem pretty much always to go to the left.1 point

There is actually our shoot on monday sept 5 for our labor day. We just started doing public shoots this past year because of a grant that we received a few years back from the DEC. We need to be open to the public once a month. We usually have our public shoots on sunday's once a month but we are starting to get little bit busier so we may start doing them twice a month. You do not have to be a member but you are more than welcome to come to one of our orientations if you would like to join:)1 point
