I punched the tag Paula graciously gave me tonight in East Aurora. I didn’t make a great shot and had to finish her with a second bullet out of the muzzleloader. The drag is only 150 yards but it’s all uphill. Uggh31 points

Woke up at 4 am too steady sleet and rain . Decided to wait it out drink some coffee . 5 am I walk out on porch and see a red glow from the neighbors house.. then I notice flames licking up the garage . I call 911 drive over. No lights in the house so I start honking the horn as I pull in . As I get out of the truck they are coming out the door . Garage car and a 4 wheeler are a total loss . Smoke damage and minor water damage to the house . As I was the one to call it it I was asked to wait and talk to fire marshal. My hunting clothes smelled of smoke and burned plastic so I had to change and shower again . By the time they took my statement it was to late to go hunting . Thank God everybody was ok and the volunteer fire departments got there so quick and nocked it down so fast .14 points

So, this guy was a real warrior. There were three of us hunting my buddies property, two carrying shotguns and me with the 25-06. The landowner spotted this buck about 80 yards out and knocked it down with the first shot but it got back up and was limping off so he kept shooting. He got out of his stand to chase it and kept shooting, knocking it down two more times. Meanwhile, I got out of my stand to try and cut it off but it turned and crossed the field where a young hunter on the adjoining property shot at it twice when it ran right under him, also knocking it down. My buddy caught up to it but couldn’t get a shot. I set up next to a brush lot opposite all the action and got lucky when I heard the deer coming through the brush. I knelt down and spotted him as he stuck his head and shoulders out of the brush. Neck shot dropped him right there. Finally tally was 17 shots. 14 from the first shooter, two from the neighbor kid and one from me. The buck had an injured front foot that was misshapen and caused his limp. Scars from fighting all along his back and neck and a gouge below his eye. The Swiss Buck, as in Swiss Cheese from all the shots. One antler tine shot off, lower jaw shot off, shoulder shot, grazed under the front leg, neck shot and my kill shot in the neck. Nothing pretty about this one but it’s hanging in the barn after a real fight.14 points

Well I decided to fill my last 8f doe tag today. I let a bunch go at 10 yds yesterday. I hadn't seen anything up until about 10:30 but I saw the Mennonites heading in to drive the property that butts up to ours. They ended up pushing 4 does right to me (10 yds). If they hadn't have ran in so quick and stopped I'd have used my pistol but the rifle was already in hand so... The 25WSSM made quick work of her with another heart shot. Dressed at 105lbs. The Mennonites shot 14 times on that drive (they shoot anything/everything). I stayed in the stand awhile longer as the 3 other does were standing behind me and I didn't want to push them back over near the drive. Looking solely for a good buck the rest of the season now. This year I had been looking forward to the minnesota rifle season, and I had gotten my first bow last winter and had been practicing for months, after I robbin hooded two of my arrows at 45 yards I decided I was ready to start hunting. I never had been much for a bow hunter but I thought I should try it. I had most of the gear already I just needed to get some broad heads. After two days I had on a bonus tag I got a nubin buck at 15 yards. I was so happy. Then two weeks later I went to northern minnesota and did our rifle season with my family. Nov. 6th opening morning for our area, I sat on what we call the bee hill and saw many deer but couldn't get a good shot at any, then a nice doe came in and just stopped and looked right at me, for about 45 minutes she looked around and milled around out in front of me. At this point I am getting cold and wanted to warm up so I put her down. Went home had lunch and went back out for our evening hunt, I wasn't sitting for 5 minutes and deer started coming out all around me. From 1:25pm to 3pm ish I saw deer none stop. But no good sized bucks so I waited, then a little four point came out and was moving slow but wouldn't stop. Tell he got in some brush but I could see his head, so I was about to take my shit then he looked back and took off. In my head I was thinking crap, so I lowered my rifle. The moment my eye passed over my scope I saw white under a pine tree, so I looked down my scope again and all I saw was horns over one of the pine branches. Here came a 8 point buck with the mass to be a good freezer filler. So I put him down. After I shot I texted my who I was hunting with on that part of our land and told them buck down, before I could put my phone away. There was a mature doe sanding right where I shot the buck, so I shot her as well. So all and all I had a very successful rifle hunting season and my bow hunting is still active. Hahaha, my dad thinks I am trying to take his title of puting five deer down in one year, when really I want to make sausage. But so far I have only gotten four so we shall see.9 points

I retired this last April at 62 from a job I had been doing for the last 40 years. I was responsible for building, maintenance of a few large facilities, their equipment and a very precise environment. So, I was the guy. It was hard to take off at work but I did have good people I hired and part of my parting gift was making sure they understood the operations and components of systems to a high level. I finally don't have to decide what season I will have enough time to participate in as before always I had limited time. I would have to choose what days I could allocate between: Bow, crossbow, gun or muzzle loader Now this year I have all the time in the world to hunt and we've moved to our retirement home we purchase on the mountain where our land is. I can walk out the door and hunt any season. In my younger days I would walk miles in terrain. This year I invited my SIL and likely future SIL of my second daughter to hunt our property. Neither have hunted deer before but can shoot and I deem responsible. I give a crash course to them on what I know of deer habits, this land, what to do and what not to do. I put them in my two better stands. This hunt is going to be about them and not me. I'm not worried about getting in stand before daybreak or any of that. Relaxed and casual for me so I radio them up and monitor if needed or questions and don't even go out. 10 AM during crossbow "future" bags a nice 8 point. I have him wait in tree for half hour as he didn't see it go down. I go out inspect, see major blood from lung and have him get out of tree and teach him how to track. The deer doesn't get real far but it does go in a really bad direction. I do have a new neighbor in a weekender cabin and deer has die in view of his back yard. I get to meet the new neighbor I've never met. It goes well. We dragged deer back deeper into property to gut deer. First deer I ever gutted by pointing but he deer very well and SIL watched too. Drag deer out to hang. Put SIL back in his stand and I decide to hunt other stand thinking little hope after all the racket we must have made. Wrong, nice buck. My bow season over and I didn't spend two hours actually hunting. SIL gets nothing but he only had the weekend to hunt and has to travel back home. He said he would come back for opening gun. Gun season, I put SIL in good stand and at 9 AM he scores a nice doe as he was lucky enough to score a DMP for our area. Teach him how to track but this was one smart deer. It walked down a creek for a while but it was still blowing major blood so I found a hint. I liked the challenge and thing actual left creek and them came back and died in creek. This now makes the second deer I gutted by pointing. Get it dragged back and hung and I decide to go up in a stand. Twenty minutes later, bang. I score a nice buck. Now I do feel really good about all of this. Mostly training two hunters in proper and safe ways to hunt with obtaining sucess on their first outing. That's not normal here. Camp North of me has four seasoned guys hunting and they have yet to score a deer. (They had several beers with us admiring our deer.) But the thing I find most ironic is having all the time I've ever wanted to hunt and only have spent 2 hours and 20 minutes this year. I can't tell you how many passed years days and days were spent for zip and it always seem just a bit more stressful. Not the hunt. The before and after. Even a bad hunt was better than a good work. I kind of really want to hunt the Christmas Muzzle Loader on my back country skies. But do I really need another deer. $6 hamburger might say yes and I was kind of counting on hunting occupying more of my time. Done other critters and I'm no longer interested in anything but deer.7 points

Two deer hunters were standing on a ridge near a highway in rural West Virginia on the opening day of deer season. They both saw a trophy-class buck meandering towards them. As the one hunter raised his gun to shoot, a funeral procession came slowly by. ... The hunter lowered his gun, took off his hat, and stood with his head bowed until the procession was past. Of course by then, the deer was long gone. The other hunter exclaimed "Wow! That was the most sportsman like act I've ever seen! You allowed this trophy buck to escape while showing such compassion and kindness toward someone's dearly departed. You are a great humanitarian and a shining example to sportsmen throughout the world!" The first hunter nodded and said; "...Well, we were married for 42 years.”5 points

Wow, very humbling morning! 705 saw a doe coming in, watched her for 10 minutes to make sure she didn’t have a boy friend. In that time she had made it to 25yds. I was on the ground and with a puffy wind I knew she wouldn’t be there long so I took a quartering to shot, felt steady with elbow on my knee, gun went off with the cross hairs exactly where I wanted them. I shot her with my 450 bushmaster shooting Remington 260gn accutips. At the shot she spun and ran away appearing fine for the 20yds I could see her. Gave her a bit and started looking around 8, at 10 my brother came over and started helping. We couldn’t find hair or anything where she was standing. And started grid searching in the swamp and ravine in the direction she went. At around noon I was walking a ravine 90 degrees to my left of where I was when I shot her and found her dead 50yds from where I was sitting. I hit her in the hair I was aiming at on the point of her shoulder, Both lungs were mush, bullet was in the hide behind 2nd to last rib. I knew with 100% certainty that I didn’t miss her but it was hard to keep that confidence with zero sign of a hit. After I found her I figured out why she didn’t bleed much at all, I was shooting down on her a little so I held a little high on the shoulder. The entry wound was plugged with lung chunks so the only blood that she leaked came from her nose/mouth with no exit. The fact that she did a 180 from where I saw her running made it even harder. I guess the moral of the story is don’t give up after you shoot. I feel most people would have given up and thought they missed after 4hrs of looking with zero blood. No quite live but yesterday we had some snow and there’s nothing I enjoy more than tracking deer in he snow. I hit the woods at 10 am and had to circle the woods to get the wind. While still hunting a steep hill side I cut tracks and at 12:14 I jumped this guy from his bed and my 760 Gamemaster in 35 rem came up smooth as silk.4 points

I killed a nice big doe this morning. They came in with the sun blazing in my eyes. I had to let them go past, do a spin o rama to get out from under the harness, and then wipe tear from my eyes for a few moments. Im lucky theres red brush over their heads between us. I had a slight hang fire (ML) but the shot was perfect. I saw blood immediately blast out of her through the scope. The blood trail was top 5 all time and she went maybe 75. I saw her go down. Im going to give the gun a good cleaning for tomorrows hunt3 points

Hunted opening morning with my wife and we experienced the quietest opening morning ever. Few sightings of small deer and only half a dozen distant shots. Got back out about 3:00 Saturday afternoon, a bit later than I wanted but didn’t bump anything on the way in, at least that I know of. I went to a ladder stand on the tree line of a swampy stand of pines to the right and a 4 acre field on the left. My daughter was 800 yds away in the tower stand that I was in that morning. I was just settled in there for a few minutes and I get a glimpse of a high spike walking toward me along the field edge about 100 yards out. At one point he’s inside 30 yds and just about directly down wind of me. I’m just thinking to myself how the heck are you not smelling me when it looked like he walked into an electric fence when he got a whiff of me. He instantly reared back and bolted back about 30 yds. He really wanted to keep going back in his original direction so he came walking back, stiff legged and nose in the air. Got just a bit closer, got another whiff of me and quickly spun around and took off into the pines. About 4:00 a doe and two fawns come ripping across the field and stop, looking back at where they came from about 100 yds away. I’m thinking OK, here we go, who’s chasing you, as I slide the gun over to my left. Another spike, followed by yet another spike galloping behind him. The doe took kind of an aggressive stance toward the lead spike, and then everyone just started feeding in the field and milling around for 15 minutes or so before filtering off through the far tree line. All quiet after that. Around 5:00 it’s getting somewhat dark so I figured oh well, no shots tonight so I’d pour a cup of coffee and sit until after legal light ended which was at 5:13 here. I usually sit till it’s dark enough to sneak out unseen if possible. I look at my watch and it’s a couple minutes after 5:00. A minute or two later I see a deer step out of the pines at about 80 yards and take the exact same walking path toward me as that first spike did. Big body, nose to the ground, steady walk. I already had the gun up, put the scope on him and am trying to quickly judge the rack. Ease the safety off. Seemed wide enough for me but with his nose to the ground, his tines were pointing right at me at 60 yds and I couldn’t judge height at all. Getting closer. Crap, he’s going to walk right into my scent cone just like that first spike did and bolt right out of my life. 50 yards and he picked his head up and ever slightly quartered away. High tines. Shot was base of the neck, and went out pretty much mid chest and he dropped instantly. Went down like I flipped his off switch. It got dark quickly after that and he fell in a position that I really couldn’t see the rack. I sat for 5 minutes before I got down and walking toward him, the feeling of ground shrinkage is creeping in. Nah, not tonight. Lit him up with the flashlight and took a quick pic. I went to get the tractor before I dressed him out. We hear lots of Coyotes every night and my buddy lost a next-day recovery doe here to a bear a few years back. Figured I’d keep the smells down til I could get him out. And the tractor lights sure do help. Daughter Stephanie followed me out on one of the quads to get some field pics. There’s a bit of long-arming here but not much, just wanted to stay trendy. I started oddly this season by retiring on the Bow opener but quickly got busy with other stuff for a few weeks while it was warm. Got at it a few days before the crossbow opener and after about a dozen sits, I didn’t really see much of anything but does and spikes and nothing even close to being in range. Then last Monday I took a doe with the xbow and my best buck on Saturday. Still have a doe tag to stay in the game but I want to keep that open to be able to transfer to one of the kids if needed. Got to watch that horrible Bills game yesterday, but now I’m up for a week with family, staying up too late, and hopefully being put to work recovering deer for wife and daughter. Son in law is coming over from his Dad’s camp in Allegheny for a day or two to hunt too. I’m glad for the little scent education that first spike gave me, and without that extra 30 minutes this year, I wouldn’t have gotten my best buck to date. Great end to day that started so quietly! This guy turned out to be a frequent trail cam visitor on a few different trail cams all year. He messed up that lump of a brow tine in velvet. He was probably the #2 buck and as far as I know, #1 is still pushing does around.3 points

Odd year for me. I spent 5 hours in a tree stand for the entire bow season and shot a busted up 9pt and then Opening day in the Catskills at camp I was in the woods on the ground for an hour and 5 minutes and shot a 7pt. First time I can remember filling both buck tags in a season but I suffer from CRS. Unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to be out and enjoy the outdoors. Wish my son had made the trip to camp with us as this could have been his first deer but at 15 yrs old, girlfriends are just as important as WiFi [emoji2357]. Hopefully I can post with him later this season. Sent from my XT1635-01 using Tapatalk3 points

As you can see when asking about opinions for the best hunting rifle and caliber to meet your specs the answers are wide and variable, kind of like asking what is the best truck or hunting dog. I would not place so much emphasis on the action because the reality is in the type of terrain you are describing you will almost surely be firing just one shot. Miss that all important first shot and the odds of getting an accurate second shot off at a streaking Deer in thick cover are not good. I would narrow it down to something light weight, fast handling and compact using an action and style that you like personally and feel comfortable and confident using. I have several rifles that will work well for woods hunting in thick cover but I would say the one that fits the parameters best in tight cover when the leaves are on and ranges short is a little Marlin 94 44 mag.
