  1. Thanks for all the congratulations. I saw the weather forecast and was hoping the deer would be moving before the storm. I got out late and jumped 3 doe on the way in. I decided to sit in the big stand just to let everything settle down. I was there for 30 minutes, but my brain kept telling me to move to the south side of the property. I packed up and still hunted over to the south. I found two fresh scrapes 6' away from each other and decided to sit near the scrapes. I was only there 15 minutes, and I could smell the musk in the air. He walked out 20 yards in front of me and that was it. It has been a tough season for a lot of us. Stay positive and trust your instincts. #from the ground

  2. Congrats to those that scored ! My nephew in Tenn. just sent me this ,and almost apologized for shooting a small one , he was frustrated, seeing tons of small bucks daily but none of his big ones . He hunts 1500 acres he shares with the owner . If we can line up our schedules I should drive down some year .

  5. My wife shot a "big doe" tonight. I'd say 3.5 yr old. Might do a little early season shed hunting Saturday.

  6. Whew finally dragged out and hung up. No record breaker, dressed 95 pounds. Saw 5 tonight, and the 4 I had in range she was the biggest. One shot went 50 yards and piled up. Snow makes for nice dragging! I also cut a very big lone track that walked in my tracks up top after I came in. That makes the freezer in better shape.

  7. This deer I'm sure was one of the garden violators over the summer. I turned the tables during bow season. Tasted amazing with a little horseradish wasabi sauce.

  8. Everything was perfect. I scouted the area where I saw the does and buck a few days ago and walked in the quiet snow at 6:30 to set up under a big hemlock. I was perpendicular to where they have been walking with shooting opportunities in 180 degrees. I waited. At 7:45 a doe walked in from behind me. She caught my eye and I froze. She didn't spot me though she was only 30 yards away. But she was on my hard right and I'm a lefty. I had to swing my gun and body over to the right while staying rooted to the tree without her seeing me. Did I wait until she passed me a little so I had a quartering away shot? Why do the right thing when the opportunity exists to screw it up? I moved, she saw me and we froze. I waited a beat, then raised and fired in basically an off-hand shot twisted body shot as she bolted. Hard to say where the bullet ended up ... next town ... county ... Des Moines. It sure as hell didn't end up in the deer. No blood or fur on the ground or her track.

  9. https://youtu.be/ZhikjcVpGSw Hello everyone, I was stunned to say the least when this big boy came right to us on a one man deer push in the Catskill Mountains of NY. I’m proud of my wife for following in her late grandfather’s and uncle’s footsteps and is becoming a fine hunter! Thanks for watching! It was also our YouTube channel’s 100th video so it was a success all around!

  18. Seriously? Have you read what you typed? Or do you ever? You constantly tell people what they should think and feel. You try to mask it, but anyone with a little reading comprehension can see it. If they don't do things just so and how the far right deems things to be, they are wrong. Funny thing is, that's exactly how the left does things too, and you seem to dislike being told what to do or think. Freedom of the mind should be just that, left to let people make a choice and not be slammed for it. So, you come to a hunting forum to talk about politics and not brag about hunting? It's a hunting forum where people talk about hunting, it's not bragging when you are here to discuss hunting. You just stated that you enjoy arguing with people- . Removing the political area will probably help this place more then hurt it. Long time members might come back who were here for the hunting talk, not the political mud slide that this forum has turned into. There are a million places to talk about politics, and "debate" them, so there's no need for it here. There's a lot of forums that keep to the topic of what they are about and they do just fine without the politics. On another note, removing the political section isn't a breach of the damn constitutional rights, it's not trying to "silence" anyone, it's keeping the goal of the forum on point. If people can't respect the rules and continue to post political topics if that section is removed then it just shows a lack of respect for the other members here and the staff.

  19. Bob is less than an hour south of me. Sure there's a chance he's a stub 1, but where I come from it's generally pretty easy to tell a 1.5 from a 2.5. It gets harder for the week 3.5's and stud 2.5's. At the end of the day it doesn't matter for Bob or me, does it?

  20. So why don't you and all of the people who simply hate the section, stop coming to it? Why are a handful of people constantly attacking those who post in it? Eliminating this forum will not stop political issues from appearing on this site. Look at it this way, this forum gives the site a place for it to be. Take that away and it will become part of all the other forums on the site, as you said prior. The solution will become worse than the illness. I don't know why people think they can ignore the politics that are affecting every aspect of their lives right now. They're just allowing everything to burn down around them and will be wondering what happened when it's over. I happen to be very politically active in all areas of my life. I willingly take on all comers, not to change their minds, but to allow the others on the sidelines viewing the debate to see both sides of the debate and think for themselves. Those are the folks I'm talking to. Hunting has been great this year and my freezer is full. I live at deer camp 2/7/365 and just walk out my door to hunt on my own land. I know how precious this lifestyle is and want to preserve it for anyone that wishes to do it. I cannot stand by while people in government constantly attack it from all angles. If what I say has no impact on your thinking, that's a shame, but it isn't my shame.

  21. To me it's interesting. I found this in a quick search from the DEC: "62.6 percent --- portion of the adult buck harvest that was 2.5 years or older, the greatest in New York history and up from 40 percent a decade ago, and 30 percent in the 1990s." So I'd guess by year "age", that the 1.5 YO buck is the majority of what is killed here. As the deer get older, the 2.5 is the next age class to be killed and so on. It stands to reason that the 4.5, 5.5, 6.5 etc are more scarce as the get older. When you kill a bigger bodied and possibly bigger racked buck, it's just neat to see approx. how old he is.

  22. I think many unvaxxed folks have Omicron and don't even know it. The symptoms are that mild, even in the unvaxxed. Yet idiot Hochcul has declared a state of emergency. She wants to keep the power that comes with it. She doesn't care about our health.

  28. The longer weather outlook....looks kind of lame for late season. Was really hoping for snowpack to drive bed to food action in a more concentrated and "required" way. Our plots are actually being extremely under-utilized compared to most years. We have a few acres of standing corn, the only in the area, and it's a practical ghost town. Same with brassicas. Usually by now there is action, even if at night. We had alot of acorns, and with the lack of snow I am wondering if food availability is comparatively high for this time of year in a more widespread fashion.

  32. It's not giving these freebies to anyone who gets the vax. They just put your name in a hat and will pick 5 people at the end. You chances of winning are far lower than your chances of suffering side effects from the vax. Where in the DEC's charter does it give the agency the power to use the money it is allocated to involve itself in something that has no bearing on wildlife management? Are there any rules in NY anymore?

  34. Yes, we need the Guns and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussion forum on the HuntingNY site. The Guns and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussion forum is the place for those who not only care about legislation that effects firearm ownership and hunting, but the events that affect our very lives. It also assembles some great minds to help educate those who are willing and able to gain knowledge and advance their intellect. For those who believe that HuntingNY should only allow the discussion of hunting related issues, then explain why are food, sports, beer and other “non-hunting” related topics discussed? Is anyone rightfully offended by these “non-hunting” related topics? It is sad that there are some that visit the Guns and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussion forum who are unable or unwilling to have a civil discussion without resorting to making inappropriate remarks. I have witnessed numerous inappropriate remarks published by some commenter’s even repeatedly. That type of juvenile behavior of attempting to provoke someone with inappropriate remarks into an argument is so counterproductive and dangerous. One can only wonder how they behave once away from a computer monitor. Sadly those who resort to this behavior are apparently suffering from some degree of emotional disturbance, mental illness and/or intellectual deficiency that they become so irate in expressing themselves. In conclusion, for those who are offended by the Guns and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussion forum, why even visit this forum? Maybe HuntingNY can set up an option to block viewing the Hunting Laws and Politics Discussion forum to help those offended by this forum.

  35. Ended up being a good hunt but the big buck I saw earlier didn’t show. Probably should have been more aggressive and still hunted but I got covered in deer and couldnt get out of the stand. Been a long season of cat and mouse and passed a lot of good bucks trying to catch up with one of my shooters. They are on camera frequently and in day light but no consistency to their movement and each have pretty big home ranges. Hopefully get an opportunity at one late season Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  41. He’s a venture capitalist, owns companies all across the U.S. and Canada , he works from home but also travels to those companies as needed , so long range plans are risky . It seems one can take two bucks ( and 3 doe per day …) the season runs into Jan. Now you got me thinking . I’ll have to text him .

  43. Sunday the 5th. Alarm went off at 4am, but my body wasn't having anything to do with that! So got to the farm about 9. Asked my partner to take a ride to the east side of the property, to scope out a spot I could sit close to where I'd park my truck. After just a little searching I found a spot on a bluff, overlooking the back side of a woodlot. Good enough. Not even 100 yards from where I'd park, and all I needed was to bring a milk crate to sit on! Will be perfect for a sit sometime. After leaving that spot and getting my wheeler I was going to a short ladderstand to watch the brushy end of a pasture where we had seen a nice buck a couple times. Not far from the stand I see someone sitting in the stand. A trespasser. I posted about this part of the day in another thread. By the time that issue was worked out it was almost 3:00. I thought about just heading home early. But remembered the spot I found earlier. So grabbed a milk crate and off I go for the last hour or so. Walk the 75 yards or so, put down the milk crate, look around and 10 minutes later I see something moving! I'm watching as a big bodied buck stepped out from a tangle of brush! His rack doesn't fit his body, and he looked like one we'd had on camera a couple times? So I decide I really want him!!! Had to wait for him to slowly work his way to an opening for a clear 50 yard shot. My 270 Sako barked, he made a run of 20 yards before lying still. A solid 3 year old that dressed in the 190s!!! I can't begin to say how happy I was!!! I almost fell off the darned bluff jumping for joy! Been a tough season for me. But this was a great feeling.
