I’ll backtrack a little. I’m 53 but when about 16 or so was out shooting squirrels in the winter at a local country club my Pop was greens superintendent of and my brother Lee worked there too. Both for many many years. Upon finding a big ole Beech tree with “ the owl called my name “ in it I asked my brother if he knew anything about it. He said yes I carved it years ago. IIRC it’s a story written about the same year I was born about an Englishman settling in with a Native American tribe. The Indians told him if you heard an owl call your name you were soon to die. My brother would drive from WNY every year to Montana from late April to Early November every year for so many years to fly fish. He’d fish Idaho and Wyoming too. He’d text once in awhile as working too. Hearing of saw where a grizz ripped up a tree stump today , peregrine dive bombing a bald eagle over the Madison river . He was a legend out there as one incredible fly fisherman. . Guides would hear he’s on fish and want to question him. He’s met Steven Segaul, Henry winkler , want to say Tom Brokow and a few others out there. Lee had a brain aneurysm 3 years ago October 22( his birthday ) out there. I was POA. Upon many calls with surgeons. All of which said even in great shape as he was ( at 72 he could kick my ass as worked out hard ) , with intense rehab he’d never be able to tye flies , walk the trout streams again. Upon a week of on life support I had to make the correct and unselfish decision. October 29, 2019 Lee passed. November 2 mere days later I packed up my climber and headed out. By 2 pm I’m locked in. At 2:15 I hear a barred owl sound off. What ?! It’s mid afternoon and I’ve never heard an owl sound off at this time of day. Mere minutes pass and a 4 point buck is walking straight to me. I let him pass slight quartering away. He hits a tree I’ve lasered at 11-12 yards and I send it. Watch him take off 40-50 yards and crash. Lee and the owl sent me that buck. My first archery buck. I passed a few a little bigger until then but I knew this buck was sent by Lee. Grampy will agree on owls are a spirit bird I learned after. Last year I got a nice owl tattoo on my calve to remind me up said buck and Lee. He passed on October 29th. October 29th couple days ago I was on deck at apartment listening. Once in awhile I’ll hear coyotes yipping , barking and occasional howl from nearby large cemetery. But this night I hear a barred owl on the day he left us 3 years prior. It’s a couple houses down. I tell gf and get immediate tears as never heard an owl from here before. Following night I go to listen. Upon opening the door I hear the whoooooooo and he’s sitting in the top of a black walnut tree 20 yards from me. I can see his profile silhouetted in the night sky. I call gf to come look and listen. Again I get tears. He flies off few houses and within a minute perched in same tree in front of me. I’d keep coming into apartment and he’d keep being there when I went to look. So tomorrow I will hunt and hope that Lee sends me a buck .26 points

Yes, all my equipment was made by hand (although I wasn’t using my stone point…Zwickey). Crazy angle now that I see it from the inside…the deer was literally above me…arrow went in low and out high…always a first! I still cannot believe he didn’t know I was there!25 points

Had a buck run by here at 9am yesterday. That's a good sign. Also had an owl come say hello right at sunrise. Nice morning so far. I'll be here all day unless me or my father in law shoots something. Might check cams midday. Have fun out there! Sent from my SM-G975U using Tapatalk13 points

Passed on this buck. Antlers excluded to avoid any judgment.11 points

I'm in a stand that hasn't been hunted ...a minimum of at least 7 scrapes on the way in and a couple look like this pic. Also a rub with the sapling broke off. LFG. Sent from my motorola edge 5G UW (2021) using Tapatalk10 points

11/2/22 Luna and I headed over to finish a track started by fellow tracker and friend, Matt Miller last night. Matt and Greta tracked a buck about three hundred yards before it became clear this was a gutshot buck and they backed out. Unfortunately for Matt, he has this thing called a job and couldn’t go today. Luna quickly locked on and we were at the last bed in no time. There was no blood the rest of the track. We were 150 yards beyond where they had backed out last night when there was a commotion about 30 yards ahead. The buck was still alive! He got tangled up in a fence as he tried to leave so I called the hunters son up to take Luna so I could take a shot. By the time that happened, the buck had freed himself and ran across a small clearing. I was able to see exactly where he went in the woods so I snuck up and was able to finish him. The initial shot hit a front leg and lower brisket, angling in to catch a little bit of gut.10 points

Tree rats , turkeys and one yote . They were working in the field way to the north when I walked in at 6 :30 AM. But every once in awhile some loud clanking thing drives along the west edge behind me , then comes back a few minutes later. Drew back 4x to keep shoulder loose, it’s a struggle even on this warm day . common Xbow !6 points

Was sitting just upstream of the mouth of a very small draw. I saw a sapling on the hill right above me moving around. I got ready and the deer walked down the hill right to me. I stayed extremely still and squinted my eyes. When it turned broadside at 8 feet, I took my shot. Very exciting!! I heard some splashing…hopefully from a beaver and not the deer crossing the creek. In the photo, I’m pointing my bow where I was sitting…I’m standing where the deer walked down the hill…the deer stepped over the log to the right of the yellow beach branches (the front of my blind). Unfortunately I wasn’t nocking my stone point…was using a two blade zwickey with my selfbow.6 points

Saturday morning saw a flurry of activity for me in the Cap District. One small 4-6 at daylight, then around 8am I had a different buck chasing/harrassing does (never saw him). at 9am, had a nice 6 that i would have shot chase a doe into thick cover behind me. I didnt think they vacated the area so I hung tight. Had a doe and button work in behind me in the thick cover and ultimately right under the stand around 10:30am. They vacated and around 11:00am and I was going to call it quits to get to daugthers Softball game, but the doe came trotting back to about 35 yards. It was clear she was bumped back to me. Brought the bow back up, got arrow nocked, and turned around in stand, but when I looked back up I couldnt locate her. She was on the edge of a small CRP field and I scanned for a half hour to no avail. Back down goes the bow and i get all unhooked and as i start to climb down, that big 6 jumps out of that CRP and gets out of dodge. A little dejected as I would have definitely stayed, but kids come first and it was an awesome hunt! Shot a nice doe Monday (yesterday) at 9:30am on different property. Double lung at 30yds and "sick" daughter assisted with recovery. Defintely some bucks pushing does around at this property as well in the morning, they just never showed themselves. Good luck all, pushing my vacation back to next week or possibly the week before gun, but it appears things are happening! Good luck all!6 points

Exciting AM so far, big 7pt came out down 15 yds from the tree I was in yesterday which put him at 45yds. He went back into bedding. Doe and fawns came in shortly after, only to get ran all over by a small 6, the noise brought the 7 back out at 30yds but he wouldn't stop, he ran them all over the ridge. Just had a spike come through, followed by 2 more fawns. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk5 points

Nothing after 4pm today, got a pic of a 10 that has been absent for a month a bit ago though, 150 yds from where I sat the last few days, hopefully he graces me with his presence at 25 yds in the AM. Another all dayer tomorrow. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk4 points

Not the same though , I have targets in my yard and I know the distance from every weed on that bright , Level ground , with zero branches in the way . I stump shoot on the way out in the morning , all at ranges I have to guess at ,in an actual woods , uphill ,down , between branches and so on . ruined an arrow yesterday, lose a few too each year . Train like you fight and all that4 points

This place is pretty magical the first week of November. The corn still standing is putting a damper on it though, they cruise that corn all day and you can't see them. I've got two more dark to dark sits to make it happen. I was razor close this morning but I hate forcing shots. I believe 11 different bucks in the last 2.75 days. Used to enjoy stump shooting. Great way to get pretty good at judging yardage. I also got good at figuring out which stumps were ok to shoot. Too fresh and you could damage a arrow even with judo points.3 points

There is always a Judo point tipped arrow in my quiver. Probably late 70’s on I’ve “shot” my way in in the afternoon and shot my way out in the morning. Dead tree stumps and the odd colored leaves are worthy targets.3 points

That’s a ridiculous question. The end of a presidency has always meant the end of that president’s relevance. But of course, not with Trump. He continues to hold the party captive and those who would typically be unelectable continue to vie for his endorsement. This collapse to the fridges has changed the GOP. Republican politicians fall under two broad categories - those who opposed Trump’s bs and stood up to the nonsensical election denial claims and those who kowtowed and knowingly peddled false conspiracy theories. Zeldin falls in the latter category. This should be disqualifying.3 points

80 hunts and no deer? You need to reevaluate. Go back to the basics. Keep wind and thermals in YOUR favor. Always. SIT STILL!!! If you have to turn your head, or move at all, do it in super slow motion. If walking and stalking, and you think you are moving too slow? Move slower. Blend in with wherever you are hunting. Especially from the ground. Hunt where the deer are! Even on heavy pressure state land, there are certain spots where more deer will be than others. Find those spots! It may be harder to get there. But worth the extra effort. Be patient, and persistent. These are among the best traits of consistently successful hunters. Hang in there that extra hour or more. Even if you think you should go, because you haven't seen a deer. We all have to step back and reevaluate our hunting at times. And be willing to change what's not working for us. Be adaptable! The deer we hunt certainly are. These basics are for us all. I just want to help. Not saying I'm better than ANYONE. I am not. With that, I wish you good luck Rob. As I do feel luck plays a small part too. I'd be willing to meet up with you again, and set you in a known great spot. Where we were a few years ago. The the rest is up to you. Follow the basics, and you'll be grilling backstraps before Thanksgiving.3 points

No longer a resident of NY, but hoping Zeldin pulls the upset. A lot of middle ground Dems in NYC are feeling unsafe and disgusted with what has happened to the nice areas of NYC. I think Zeldin can do it! But only if people vote. Plus it would be cool to see a “mourning room” and other services for the crybaby Dems at work like after Trump beat Hillary Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro2 points
