  2. 10/9/2018 Well, Kunox redeemed himself tonight after yesterday’s squirrel fiasco. I was called at 6:00 tonight by a bowhunter that had gutshot a doe. He had tracked it and pushed it out of a bed and wanted me to come right out. I told him we needed to wait a minimum of 8 hours, but he said he had to leave for work at 5:00 am, so he couldn’t wait that long. I suggested he line up a friend to join me at first light, but nobody was available. I had my doubts about our odds, but I told him I’d be there around 10:00 tonight. We started the track at the hit site and Kunox quickly took us beyond the hunters point of loss. We had gone 400 yards and found ourselves in thick tag alders. Kunox was 15’ ahead of me when I saw the deer bedded down right in front of him. I called the hunter and his friend to move up, while I reeled Kunox in. I was going to give them the leash while I got in position for a shot, but she took off before that could happen. We took off after her and caught up 100 yards later. Again, in a very thick area and it was impossible to get a shot. Off we go again. I had Kunox 5’ in front of me now, and he was on the doe before I could see her. That gives you an idea of how thick this area was. He bit her on the rear haunch and she bolted, taking him with her. He was completely off the ground as I was pulling back on the leash, and he finally released his bite. 150 yards later and we were at the edge of a swamp. As we started wading in, I saw the doe bedded in the water 20 yards ahead. I had the guys take the leash and I was able to dispatch her there. We had quite the drag out through the swamp, walking mostly in beaver runs. This was one to remember!

  7. I was standing along a beaver pond waiting for some duck action.... Three mallards, two drakes and a hen, came gliding in broadside from my right...I dropped a drake, and the remaining two birds flared, the drake turning 180 degrees and the hen continuing straight ahead...I reversed my swing, killed the second drake, and then reversed again and shot the hen before she got out of range, so I made a LEFT, a RIGHT and another LEFT in a matter of 3-4 seconds...All 3 birds hit the water stone dead... A few minutes later a drake Woodie came by and I dumped him with one shot... I was feeling pretty darn cocky until a flight of teal made two passes over me....I emptied my gun both times and never turned a feather !!…..Hehehe...

  8. High enough to KNOW I'll make the shot. Broadside or quartering away, up's the percentage exponentially. Been playing the game long enough to know, even with good high percentage shots, things can go wrong with archery gear. I have no problem at all letting deer walk, if I don't get the shot I want. No one guides my arrows but me.

  13. Shot I’m most proud of is probably regular gun season opener two years ago. Daughter sitting next to me in natural ground blind she helped build. Two deer coming ripping by us at full throttle. Neither of us could get our slug guns up. She whispers shoot if you get a shot as she knows I’m waiting on her. I let out a baaaaa and they lock up , I stand up and grab the super black hawk off the backpack next to me. Put the sights on the one and squeeze and it folds up like a cheap suit. I had practiced all spring and summer with this newly acquired gun. Guesstimated at 50 yards but then lasered gut pile at 63. First hand gun deer and daughter there to witness it. Don’t take many luck shots I’d consider to be my best.

  16. We talk a lot about the right or wrong shots and when to take and not to take and how far etc........ but whats the best shot youve ever made while hunting anything with gun or bow? Mine is a bow shot at 31 yards on a buck about 5 -6 years ago. I was in a stand and a buck came out into a field just before dark. He just stood there in the same place and just wouldnt move. I couldnt see his head anymore but saw antlers when he walked out. But I had a full picture of his body in the kill zone. I was looking through the crotch of a tree half way between us and I kept watching as he stood there and i then thought - i can make that shot! So i drew back and lined up between the crotch of the tree and shot- yup hit him and he took off running with arrow but he turned so i couldnt see for sure where it hit. It was like 5 minutes of legal light. So i sat for 1/2 hour then got down to check the spot quick. When I did i heard a crash in the woods. So i backed out til morning. Came back the next morn and went in where i heard the crash. but no deer and no blood. Kept looking and like 50 yards away found a solid blood trail for about 25 yards and it ended. And didnt know which way the deer was headed for a direction. So i started doing semi circles and couldnt find a thing. on one of the circles i ended up back on the edge of the same field and i look out and at 25 yards is two bucks - one a nice 8 point. I was tempted as they couldnt see me in the brush but def knew something was there. I grunted and they came closer. but of course already tracking a deer and a buck at that. So they got wary and took off. I looked for another hour and a half and just couldnt believe i couldnt find it. So i went up on a ridge that was above everything and there was a white belly down in the gully of a creekbed. And i had walked buy there twice already prob as close as 20 yards and never saw it. Arrow was still in it sticking almost straight up but not out the other side. Hit high lung and it prob died just a short while after i shot it, but was surprised the arrow didnt pass through. this is the stand and can see the spot i shot through the little tree to the right behind the stand. Deer was prob about 150 yards from there down in a deep creek bottom right up against a bed of stones. I made a heart shot on a doe as well last year but the one thru the tree had to be the best. And I am one to pass a lot of times but for some reason I was confident i could make that shot.

  19. The day before I smoked a bedded mule deer from 324. His name is Dies Downwind for obvious reasons...he was downwind from me and he definitely knew I was there he just never saw me belly crawl up to the lip of the crest where I shot him from. I think for that one if I got any lower to the ground I'd have been in China Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

  21. A lot of people used them, a lot of people killed deer with them. The problem with them is that you can’t get a cheekweld and see through the scope. It forces you to have to float your face and try to find the scope costing time and accuracy, scope shadow becomes a big issue! Another big problem with them is that it kills you in low light scenarios if you wanted to use the irons because you’re looking through a tunnel at irons. Another problem when trying to use iron sights is that it takes away one of the biggest attributes of using iron sights, the open sight picture when tracking a moving deer while looking through the sights because of the tunnel vision. The only good part about see through mounts is that they make the scope into an excellent carrying handle. You’re worried about weight, there’s an easy way to shave a lb take that scope and mount off and spent 20$ and mount a Williams peep on it and you’ll have an excellent walkabout adk gun! Also ditch that heavy leather sling and takes those sling swivels off they’re well known for squeaking and rattling at the worst times, if you think you need a sling a section of 550 cord with loops on both ends works perfect for when you’re dragging other wise leave it in the pack or pocket. Slings get caught on way too much crap when trying to sneak through the woods! One piece of advice I’ll give you on the 7400 is make sure it’s clean but don’t put any oil near the firing pin! They’re well known for humming up when it’s cold if oiled and you’ll get light primer strikes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. The most memorable amazing shot that I ever made was about 4 or 5 feet from the tip of my arrow. I was standing behind an approx. 4' diameter oak watching a trail that was 20 yds away. A huge doe came along the trail and then turned and waked directly to the tree I was standing behind. I drew the bow while screened by the tree, and started walking around the tree as the deer walked around the other side. Finally I stopped and waited for the heart/lung area to be exposed as the deer kept walking. she ran about 15 yards and piled up. I swear I could have almost touched that deer. Even getting that shot without being detected was amazing. I had all the leaves raked away around the tree just in case a deer came from an unexpected direction. What I hadn't expected was having a deer walking straight at me to the other side of the tree that I was standing behind.

  34. I have a ton of exciting shots, but the one i felt most good about was when i was in a tree overlooking a beaver pond and a small deer came in about 100 yards away and was walking funny, hunched over. The deer immediately bedded in the cattails. I had no intentions of shooting it. I got down a few hours later and walked up to the deer and it jumped up and i could tell it was hurting. It ran 10 yards stopped and looked at me to say " please put me out of my misery". I put him down and turns out someone shot him near his spine and another shot in his foot. If i didnt shoot him he would have had a long agonizing death.

  35. I agree with all the advice Buckmaster7600 has given the OP. I have hunted with my Rem 742 since my dad gave it to me for Christmas when I was 15. I'm now 62. I have dumped a lot of deer with Ole Reliable in all that time. I am strictly a still hunter, or tracker when snow conditions are right. To that end, my gun wears a Leupold 1.5-5 mounted as low as possible for the cheek weld and pointability. It is set around 2.5x for a wide field of view and I ditched the factory irons so they are not visible through the scope. When it's raining or snowing hard, I switch to my dad's 742 carbine onto which I installed a Williams peep sight. I took out the aperture and painted the base ring with fluorescent green nail polish. Now it's like a ghost ring with a big field of view. It is really slick to use in thick woods. Regarding slings, my guns never wear one. When I was a much younger man, I missed the opportunity at a very large buck while walking out to meet my dad with the gun on my shoulder. There just wasn't enough time to get the gun into position before he set his ears and took off. That was a very hard lesson learned. Since that day I carry a lite black nylon sling in my coat that doesn't go on until I'm ready to drag my deer. My gun is always in front of me ready to go. We have always kept our 742's very clean and run them almost dry except for the slightest hint of oil on the action bars. We have never had any problems with either gun, in all these years, maintained this way. OP, take and use your dad's 742. The weight is not that bad. You'll get used to it. An added bonus is the connection you'll have to your dad. Believe me when I tell you, that becomes huge when he's gone.

  36. That a great point Moog, I have some pretty good shots but by far my most memorable was on an 8pt I shot still hunting in the ADK’s with the bow! Buck was bedded down below me and I couldn’t get any closer as soon as I released the arrow I knew it was perfect, watching the nocturnal disappear behind his shoulder in the 10ring is one of my favorite hunting memories and a shot that I replay in my head constantly! 38. I have had a few memorable shots but a hunt and shots taken that still stands out today in my mind after many years have past. As a young fellow I was on a general small game hunt along with a friend. We were pushing through an Alder thicket-swamp to see what we could jump out, my gun that day was a Mossberg three shot 16 Ga bolt action that had a poly type adjustable choke on the end of the barrel. Three Woodcock flushed one after another and I dumped all three. Al

  43. Stormy, my friend....Lots of us here have killed LOTS of deer with shotguns....No debating that they are effective for killing deer within their limits... In your OP, you asked what the posters here would prefer as a deer gun in the Adirondacks …. They answered you, from your list of available firearms... Several of them are experienced big woods deer hunters... What more can I say ? Have a good day...
