  2. I thought I would bring this thread back 6 years later and show some progress on the tree growth. This spring I took down the protection around each tree and when I showed up to camp I had a few rubs so I had to add the tree tubes again and protect them. I Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. My parents little 10 year old Westie started having some pretty violent seizures a few weeks ago. Sometimes several in one day, and they were really taking a toll on him. He's on medication for that now, which seems to be controlling them, but it's also sucking the life right out of the poor pupper. I wanted to do a carve for them just to preserve the happy and energetic pooch he used to be just in case things go south for him. Hopefully he'll adjust to his new meds and get back to being his old self again soon.

  4. Clearly Tacks is trying to raise money for a new cape and mount so I am willing to donate this lightly used pen and well repaired rubberband. All proceeds will be used for the Tacks Mount a Buck program. No reasonable offer refused.

  7. Well 2 for 3 with the kids so far. Gavin shot his doe at 5pm. I had my buddy go set in the barn with him and I am in my hang o. 30 yards above where I was last night. Had I of been in this stand the big 10 was as 8 yards. Making a scrape. Ended up seeing 5 buck last night and 19 doe. As of now watching 20 cows 1 bull 11 doe and 2 small buck. 8. Just back in town and rushed out to my stand...I call this stand the Nest as I basically built a nest of beach branches to conceal me...very roomy as I shoot a long bow... I have two ladder stands leading into it, nestled between four oak trees. Hard to capture with a camera from inside. Lots of acorns on the ground after earlier wind storm. No deer yet....

  10. This buck was at my stand at 6:18am this morning and the next series of pics were of me walking up to check the cam at 6:32am! LOL I had more cam activity in the past 24hrs that I've had in the previous 8 days combined! Hopefully things are starting to heat up!

  11. I lost my uncle late last week from bone marrow cancer as well. He fought long and hard and he's no longer suffering. Service is tonight, but I always do my best thinking, remembering and praying in the woods. That will be Friday.

  13. Strange season, but I got a tag filled. I run my own business and make my own schedule, so I have plenty of time to hunt. I saw a 1.5 year old buck opening day at 90 yards, and then not a single deer for the next 10 sits. Not sure if it was the weather, the moon, or what. Took a couple days off from hunting because of rain and warm weather. A small cold front moved through and I hurried to a new stand that I had hung. When I got into town there were off and on showers that hadn't been in the forecast. It was too cold, so I went and sat anyway. I saw 7 or 8 deer from the stand and 7 more on the walk out. That was more like it! Had a couple more deer-less sits. I bounced around to different stands, waiting for a south wind to go back to my new power line stand. Sunday's forecast had a 5mph south wind, so I went in early. I got in the stand just after 3pm and as soon as I sat down a tall spike came out. He was 200 yards away, but they were moving! Half and hour later a doe and fawn came out at 30 yards. Instead of using a brush-hogged trail to cross the power line, they dove off in the tall grass, goldenrod and berry bushes. I could only see the does ears. I had no intention of shooting her, but was surprised that I couldn't see her from 17 feet up. Two hours passed and nothing else appeared. It started drizzling. I decided to sneak down to check the fields with the last 20 minutes of legal shooting light. I came out to the field edge and stood in some tall grass against an 8 foot tall dirt berm and watched the field. There was nothing out, so I dropped my backpack and lounged against the berm. It was still sprinkling and the wind had switched from south to southeast. A buck came trotting out into the middle of the narrow hay field 100 yards up the hill from me. He had a big body and at least a fork on one side. I waited until he started feeding on clover, then got down on my belly and crawled through the waist high brown grass to the very edge of the field, pausing when he picked his head up. I was calm and not amped up. I figured it would either work, or it wouldn't, but I was going to try to get a shot. As he slowly fed closer, I pulled my neck gaiter over the bottom of my face and wiped the scope lenses clean with my sleeve. He continued to feed broadside down the hill. It didn't take him long to close the distance. The field is only 70 yards wide right there, which made the middle only 35 yards away. I had practiced at 32 yards a lot and was totally steady from a prone shooting position. I lined him up and touched off the shot. The crossbow seems fast to me after years of shooting a "slow" compound. The bolt makes a hollow sound and the buck spun and made his death dash to the woods. I watch him stumble into the timber and hear him crash. I went down to the farm house and tell my brother. We head back with flashlights and a knife. The rain had washed the blood out of the field in the 40 minutes I was gone, but I walked to the spot where he went in the woods and find blood spray on the yellow and orange leaves and the grey trunks of the small maples. 40 yards later we find him on the other side of an old stone wall. He looks long in the light of my headlamp. We get him out, cleaned up and hung for the night. In the morning I bring him to a reporting station (I'm in VT as the name implies) and weigh him. 5 points 170lbs. I am thankful. It just goes to show you: You don't have to be good or clever, but you do have to go out and HUNT and you do need to be able to shoot. It can change in a heartbeat.

  14. Another deerless day but found some fresh sign. There’s a little buck tearing it up. Made my way close to the top of the mountain but it got to thick stayed along the thick stuff and the open area. There definitely bedding up in there and feeding down by the stream. I’m going to get in there early tomorrow and try to intercept them. Great day of learning the big woods. Just a cool pic Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  15. Been holding on to this guy all summer as the hunter was from PA and wouldn't be back to NY until this November. Initially, I was worried about the cape as it had some hair slippage issues, but...he turned out ok. Got a couple of capes from this season being tanned but the season has been very slow in my area...

  17. He is a very nice buck. I am just holding out for one of a couple of others I have seen. But nothing at all wrong with him. And I may end up eating a tag as a result. Part of the gamble.

  22. I feel like my wife put's up with a lot of my shenanigans without saying a word but I think if she came home to me quartering a deer in the house there would be some words exchanged and I may be calling on my weird internet hunting friends to see if they have a couch I can sleep on for the night.

  28. Hey everyone my management plan for our new property has begun this past weekend. I drove from NOVA 5.5 hrs to our hunting camp in the town of Greenwood last Wednesday and our plan was to plant 50 Spruce trees, 11 Dunstan Chestnuts, 3 Apple, and 2 Pear trees. My dad and I planted all 50 spruce trees to start our screen on the two road frontage areas. The green line is the Spruce trees the blue lines are the two rows of fruit and chestnut trees. Chestnuts The day after we planted the spruce trees I got a nice little deer track in the soil. The previous owner used the 6 acre field for hay but its full of good clover and forage so we are gonna leave it in and maybe spray some herbicide after the first cut. After all the hard work this weekend it was time for me to get back to Virginia but I am hoping to get back up early June to see how everything is doing. I still have to get grow tubes for the trees and put protection around each one in the next few weeks. My Dad will be going down every week and checking on everything as well and putting mulch around all the trees.

  30. I really need to hunt letchworth I'm only 30 minutes away. I'd probably Billy goat down to the bottom and wait for a 150+ because I'm not about to drag anything less back up to the top! Maybe next year....

  36. It has been real slow bowhunting here so my son and I decided to give it a break and try for some ducks this morning. My son doesn't get out much due to work and his 18 month old daughter and another one on the way due in early December. So I put him on point and shortly after legal shooting time a 6 pack of mallards came in. He bagged a drake and hen out of the pack and was limited out on mallards for the day. It was a beautiful morning and we had a great time. valoroutdoors.com
