Got this bird in to 40 yards yesterday morning hammering the whole way but altho I could see the bird and could have shot it had I had a tag and gun jason couldn't see it So with all the rain and storms yesterday until it cleared off later we were going to try and roost him. Well just as yesterday morning later we watched 7 Jake's put a whipping on him and last night saw the same thing. We had a long walk and needed a lot of time as Jason's knee issues have gotten worse as the week went on. Also there is a fresh planted field along the narrow strip of woods I intended for us to set up in. So we had to walk past our Intended set up location go around the end of the new planting and back to our set up spot as I will not walk across fresh plantings. We set up within 100 yards of last night's fight location that went on at 830 PM. Figured he should be roosted close to there. It was foggy and dead quiet but I had already told jason a hen would be roosted close by as she has been there every day since March. Finally it was full light and i see 3 hens and a Male turkey working down to the corner from the south. Completely opposite from where I expected the longbeard to be, turns out it was a jake and he walked down thru the bottom and past me at 5 yards and out in the field in front of jason and he said I have never intentionally shot a jake last day last hour I still ain't gonna shoot one. 10 minutes later we hear a gobble from up top where the longbeard roosted the day before. I give him some sweet talk and he blasts back and the 3 hens to my left crank up. We see him walk right past the tree we were sitting against yesterday. 30 minutes later jason says here he comes he is in the grass walking straight to us. He fed his way stopping occasionally to strut and at 18 yards took a full load of #5 shot to the head. Jason needed to head back to ny this morning and we figured 8 am we would have to head for camp we had 15 minutes to spare. Had a great season, I watched 8 longbeards get shot, 2 Jake's get shot by the kids and 1 longbeard my granddaughter shot from the blind I set up for her and her dad. Will have to say I am flat wore out, been scouting and hunting since late Feb early March and have not missed a woods wake up since March 1st. Little over 7000 miles on the truck chasing these crazy birds but some great memories and some disappointment as my Nebraska and Ohio hunts got cancelled Tomorrow begins 2021 spring scouting. Thanks everybody. Out trying for a late inning turkey. Lake was a big mess , could hear the waves hitting the breakwall from the house. So far 4 deer and this one at 15 yards and has some good horn coming in. One hen come in behind me clucking but no Tom with her. Heard one gobble about 6:30 a long way away. Hopefully he makes his way here.

Well, that's promising...crows just flew over my area and shocked out a gobble. A good distance away but workable! Good to hear one, considering i haven't heard a gobble in over a week.

I was fine with the old one, but my wife was afraid kids would ruin it. So the family heirloom stickley is in storage and she got this bad boy for everyday use. I call it the picnic table.

Just pluck off a few leaves whenever you need some. Pinch off any flowers forming at the top too, encourages leaf growth.

Because of their relatively low numbers I would tend to think Fishers would be on the bottom of the Totem pole when it comes to the number of eggs of ground nesting birds eaten by the varmint community in the grand scheme of things. Foxes, Skunks, Coons, Possums, and Coyote all love eggs and will get their fair share. Back when I had my flock of Merriam's wild Turkeys they were raised free range for the most part. Once the Hens started up a nest and laying a clutch of eggs they would never walk directly to or from the nest. I noticed at feeding time the Hen would walk a couple of steps from her nest and fly out to the feeding area and eat. When done eating they would fly back to within a few feet of the nest and then settle back down to sit and incubate their eggs. Not positive why but I think is was a way to protect their nest and keep tracks and scent going and coming to the nest at a minimum. Al

Where you decide to hunt and how has it's own set of advantages or disadvantages. I do not like to see deer coming rather depending on hearing and when they are in view they are well within range.. a rest in a a hang on is not likely so again disadvantage to holding crossbow .. they both have their advantage and flaws but are essentially the same . Trigger , scope or sights , and approximately same fps at reasonable ranges.. I have taken deer art 65 with compound and 50 with x bow. So. Range is similar. The argument about drawing is near moot if you can draw and hold as.long as you want with 80% or more let off. It simply becomes a matter of choice when to move and release with either.

I've never spooked a deer drawing ,I shoot light poundage and draw when its behind tree or looking dead away, having used both, the bow is lighter more maneuverable, while x bow lacks draw. Is heavier and less maneuverable ( I have some stands you cant use one in as the vertical trunks are to close together and to close, that's it. Aiming is the same , if you guess range wrong or hit a limb the results are the same .
