  1. I shot at a buck just before closing time. He looked good enough for me,although i saw a bigger one earlier. I had time to range and he walked past at 35. I stopped him with several bleats and shot. The lighted nock tracked true but the hit looked forward. He ran off. I waited and got down after dark and checked the hit site, expecting very little. That's what i got too,the arrow was buried and looked very clean. I found a tuft of hair and decided to track some. I got blood, but no bubbles. I thought maybe brisket or low neck/chest. I marked where i left,50 yds on the track. I went home to tell my wife that i had to go out again and make sure the bleeding stopped. At first i wasn't even gonna take my bow,but i did. Well, much to my surprise the bloodtrail got thicker, but it still looked pretty bright, like muscle hit. I found a bed and it was drenched. After that the trail looked really good for a while, then diminished some. Eventually it almost petered out. Thats where some deer were looking at me and my flashlight. The trail went to the left of them and to my surprise the buck was laying there, still alive. He couldn't get up and i finished him. Its not easy to shoot in the dark at 5 yds. It turns out i hit him in the neck. I dont think i got much if any of the artery. My single bevel broadhead did good work though. It pays to be lucky rather than good. That was the case tonight. There was some ground shrinkage,he was a forkhorn. The drag almost killed me,so i was happy he wasn't any bigger. I have to see if i can weigh him,he seemed big to me. Either way,i am happy to have some meat in the freezer.

  2. Finally made it out for my first sit of the season with my son. On the way to our stand at around 3:15 we came up on some does feeding in the field. Made a 230 yard heart shot with the 308 And dropped her. Now spending the rest of the rainy evening sitting in our tower stand waiting to see if we can get a shot at a buck.

  3. Wow what a morning, not even sure where to start.got settled in right around 630 and waited for day break.around 730 i had a buck sneak in behind me and make a scrape 20yrds from stand.decided to pass as he looked smaller, watched him wonder onto neighbors property around 80 yards away.a few mins later i see another figure then heard antlers smashing, sure enough it was bucks fighting!!!!gave em a few grunts, got their attention but wouldnt commit.a few mins later 2 doe pop out and i saw a dark figure around 120yards away.let out a few grunts and it slowly worked my way.got within 50 and knew it was him!!!worked his way right to me at 30,drew and bow hit limbs on pine tree!!!!had to draw down,by then he's walking away from me.give em 2 more grunts and he turns right back to me beating up saplings on his way.draw and the rest is history at about 17 yards!cousin also took a shot today but at a 6pter,right under him at 35 yards.felt my phone going off as i had this buck coming in.answered n told em to hold on,all this happened with him on the phone in coat pocket!!!!.target buck and couldnt be more happy!!!!!by far my biggest buck aswell!sorry for long story, have plenty more i could say but you guys get it.

  4. In the stand at 6:30am this morning. Has a 4 or 6 pt pass by at first light. I’m waiting around for this big guy today. He’s finally been coming out near dark and figured to sit the whole day and see if I can get him to come in Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. Got my 2nd bow buck in my fairly short bow hunting adventure yesterday. The longer version of the story is in the live from the woods thread. This was the first case of ground shrinkage for me,but only when it comes to antlers. I thought he had more points. The antlers are well past his ears though and not too skinny. His body is big,i hope to get a scale to check. Not sure if he is just a big 1.5 year old or maybe a small racked 2.5 year old. His body was a lot bigger than the two does that came through before him.

  7. I wrapped caul fat from the buck I killed Saturday around a section of loin from last years Iowa buck. Used an Espresso Chilie rub that I made and grilled it all...came out excellent. I also made a batch of liverwurst from the liver of Saturdays buck...my first go at liverwurst, came out really really good

  8. Quick last minute/late night dinner. Cast iron pan seared sesame toro steak (bluefin tuna belly). Fresh. Caught 4 days ago by a buddy of mine that runs a Charter. Pretty fancy stuff supposedly. It was melt in your mouth delicious. Not that I'm anything more than your average dad cook but next time I'll plate it with stuff and take some better photos for his page. This was just a trial run. 10. Ive been lurking reading this thread from the start and thought I would post ... Have had the opportunity to take a bunch of does and three different small bucks we have three decent shooters and thats all Im really interested in,,, I hopeful my son will make short work of one of the smaller bucks... last night I was able to smoke a coyote he came though and made a failed attempt at a squirrel and I then made some mouth calls like a mouse or something and he came right to me and gave me a nice broadside shot... Good luck !!!

  16. Years ago I was driving a sedan. Got a few deer that I ended up hog tying across the trunk. After that, I'll take the hitch hauler every time. After the 90 minute drive up 390, the deer were usually frozen by the time I got to the processer.

  20. Easiest bloodctrail ever. My guess is she was in heat. The whacky 5 point would not leave her. He circled me at 20 to 25 yds while I was next to her. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

  23. This hunt started with me seeing a lot of deer around and no coyote all night. Being I would get around four hours time cough free after taking a mucinex, I was at the three + hour cough free mark when I saw all the deer looking in one direction. Low and behold, I saw it coming in and got set up for the shot. Then it disappeared for five minutes, then the deer got nervous and ran over a rock wall. I saw it trotting about 100 yards away, moved to a better position and whistled before taking a shot that hit it mid length. I was going to take another shot, but it wasn't needed. It was a decent sized male. https://youtu.be/k4xqrd5WbsY

  31. I think big groups of deer are feeding in the same spots already. I had over ten come through yesterday going to the one oak flat. And i was on one side of it. I am sure there also were deer coming in from other directions. When they group up like that you are either covered or see nothing.

  36. Was covered up with deer this afternoon. 4:30 5 does & fawns ran in. Then a spike was pushing them around and was rubbing trees. Then I saw a seven point making a scrape. The spike followed the does through at 10 yds. But the 7 never got closer than 40. Fun hunt with lot’s of action.

  42. I use that exact model. Works great. 2 pieces of advice to go with it: be mindful of the exhaust. It's hot coming out of the back of a running car. Also, sitting back there, a deer will be subject to any slop on the roads, so wrapping it is a good idea. That also shields it somewhat from other drivers who may not love seeing your dead deer's insides on display.

  43. Final count 4 doe, 15 turkey , 2 coyotes in that field . I’ve named this stand , “ the every deer will see you stand “ , put up in haste , to close to field ,wide open , will be Ok for rifle . My buddy shot a nice buck at last light on his land ,right behind the shoulder ,no pass through ,it ran hard into golden rod, he sat 30 minutes backed out , I’ll be helping him look in the AM .
