I made my second trip in three days down to Canadice this morning, planning to hunt till dark but didn't have to. I expected fog and rain but luckily (!!!!) it was only rain. Had a doe and fawn to my north early that didn't present a shot. Around 9am another combo came from the south and that doe gave me a good shot and I took it. She dropped on the spot. That caps a good but difficult season for me. I hunted pretty hard at one farm and piled the miles on my truck, trying for one particularly big buck I saw a couple times to no avail. I saw plenty of 1.5 year olds the first couple weeks of gun season then they turned into hens teeth too....... I shot a buck with the bow 4 doe (gave one to an old friend in poor health that loves venison still at 89 YO) so have plenty of venison for the year. Oh yea, I searched high & low in my truck, the barn and my ass for the PA DWT (Deer Weight Tape) and couldn't come up with it. Luckily I have a scale or two available. She was 112lbs dressed (heart and lungs left for the critters Bizzy)

It has been a very exciting holiday hunt so far…lots of time in my blind and I even harvested a nice walnut tree the other day…just hoping I can seal the deal with something a bit furry’er! I’m actually feeling very confident as I used my garden cart (previously stashed in the woods for a potential deer harvest) to haul home a 65# beaver after this morning’s hunt (I forgot to bring the cart back out with me…). Right now all I can smell is beaver castor and the stink dog I put up earlier (imbedded in my nose). Good luck!!

If ever I wished I could will a shooter within range of someone it would be you! We have to plan next year, for you to come east and hunt with me. I can then do much more than will one to you!

Was out this morning until 11am. Only saw 1 small doe sneaking through about 75 yards downhill from me. Pulled two of my cards from cameras near the stand I plan to hunt tonight. There are a ton of pics of does, about 6 different bucks including two really nice 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 year olds. The bigger bucks were between the 15th and 25th of December. The does have been there just about every evening during shooting time mostly between 3pm and dark, and then throughout the night. Also got a raccoon, gray fox, and the best pic of all is my first bear. It is a BIG one! I'm pretty good at judging bears because I hunted (and shot a few with bow and gun) them all over Canada in the 90's. I'm headed up to climb into this stand in a few. Fingers crossed!

Biggest cause of heart disease.....Bad eating habits I/E Can't keep the fatty fats from stuffing their mouths full of Bon Bon's and butter dipped seafood. That is very true Chef. We dont know a thing about each individual case . How old, healthy, or with pre existing conditions . It leaves everything vague and can be skewed easily in any direction . But what I do know , is we are now in a bigger mess than 12 months ago . This BOZO has done the same thing as he did during the H1N1 pandemic of 2009-2010 . Obama and Biden basically wiped out all the PPE gear , ventilators , test kits that were in storage . Dropped a decent sized doe tonight. I spotted a group of 15 or so from a half mile away and closed the distance to 175 yards or so. I’m fully addicted to running and gunning on the ground and spot and stalking deer. It’s been my worst season in terms of killing a good NY buck but honestly I’ve had more fun the last few weeks pushing the envelope on the ground than I’ve had in a while. Hub Blinds for me. I have four now. Each year I hunt them a little more. They are portable, and can be set up most anywhere. Stay out of the wind and rain. I have brought a small heater during real cold days. Very comfortable with a nice, oversized folding chair inside.

Rivers edge landmark, tower/blind. Tower was $500 and the blind was $700. 10' tall, 6'x6' platform topped with 3/4" pressure treated plywood. Put foam mat on top of the plywood, some insulation and super quiet. We have a buddy heater w/ a 20lb tank and we got blackout curtains on sale dirt cheap... Those are hung and it's pitch black in there for the most part. Wrapped lower portions of the frame in pipe wrap so there is no metal clinking from anything. Cost of lumber led me to just buy a boxed setup. Definitely impressed with the quality and would recommend it to others if these can be found. My father and ł raised it ourselves without a tractor... it required a few adjustable ladders, a come along and a farm jack. Was a little nerve wracking but we got the job done. Braced it with 2x4 while raising it to prevent any twist. Wish ł did it sooner, now ł'm spoiled... Kicking around a lockout system for the ladder but the python lock is working for the time being.

Had a monster hit during a thunderstorm. Had 3 poles out went down only 2 there. Took my 29.99 Walmart special lol. Gonna learn to the holders 3 days fishing nothing like this happened. Hopefully he survives and my pole is somewhere in lake Marion. Lol.

I'm no stranger to social media as some members on here know (the ones who I am friends with on Instagram) and I believe its ruining a good bit of hunting. Guys are getting lost in jealousy. I'm seeing people who are shooting great deer, but aren't that happy with it because they're seeing guys shooting bigger ones. Too many hunters my age are having that happen to them. Guys that don't want to post their deer because they're worried people will look down on them for not shooting a 140" buck off public with a bow. Its a shame when someone shoots a beautiful deer, that they have to feel anything less than happy. There is a positive where its encouraging guys to push themselves and are successful when maybe they wouldn't have been with out that push from social media guys. I think people need to tune that stuff out and follow what makes them happy with hunting. In the end of the day its all about enjoying what you do. If you're not enjoying it, why do it? All in all, I think social media is hurting more than its helping at this point.

Interesting thread for sure. Glad Moog asked as I don’t think there is one practicing wildlife biologist on here but sure a lot of experts lol. I do get a kick that one of the one most concerned about deer being over stressed is the one who cages up wild animals for a living. But neither here nor there I do agree the season is too long. I am not against the holiday hunt. I think the regular season should end 7-12 days sooner for a longer break before it and make the Holiday hunt like 3 days. The issue here that some of you are arguing with the others on is moot. The state manages deer on a quantity and overall hunter satisfaction basis not a trophy and more even buck to doe ratio basis. You all need to group up and pull in politicians and figure out ways to get the DEC to change its current goals. I am at least happy the state has been giving in a bit to hunters with the lower age, rifle use and so on. Happy New Year to you all however you choose to hunt or hunt with. I'm waiting to order a 2022 Tundra Limited. I've been trying to arrange a test drive and its been an absolute nightmare. No one wants to give a straight answer...I hate dealerships. I'm probably going to buy sometime in July/August. Im waiting for more details on the hybrid before I decide which powertrain I want. Not looking forward to paying 55k for a truck, but it is what it is at this point
