  1. My son had to put down his house pet dog 2 months ago. We had talked about him getting a Labrador retriever to retrieve ducks we hunt in our marsh and geese in our fields. Well he found a local litter and pulled the trigger on a AKC black Lab pup. The puppy will be ready for pickup at the end of the first week of March. The litter consisted of 3 blacks, 3 yellows, and 2 chocolates, and both parents were hunting stock. My daughter in law named him "Gunner" which I think is a great name. I am looking forward to working with him and hunting with Gunner next season. My son's next door neighbor has a pond which we can use to train him. This will be our first retriever and I hope to post updates in the future. valoroutdoors.com

  2. So as I sit here tonight I gave my Niece almost two weeks to talk it over with Fiance. I asked twice since then and she said they were too busy to talk. Well my Brother and I moved them into an apartment today. Last night I was out to dinner with my Brother and his soon to be son in-law. The guy starts showing me pictures of houses in the Catskills they want to look at. I'm like WTF. At breakfast today I told her I needed an answer so we can get the ball rolling and get you pre approved. She said she couldn't think about doing that until early summer. I told her it wasn't going to work out and was real nice about it. Would love for her to have the house but they don't know their priorities yet. Called my buddy and told him it's yours. Lawyers will contact each other next week. I feel weight is lifted off my shoulders. Thanks for all of the advice!

  4. Well now I just feel horrible. I got home from shopping for a new toy and my daughter said, Dad someone dropped something off you. She handed it to me and I literally started cracking up while Natalie looked at me confused. Not only did @Lawdwazdrive an hour plus to drop of a hunting sock that I am sure will bring great luck, but also a box of peanut brittle that I happen to love. So here is to a guarantee on one big bucks next year while I wear his sock, but also a heck of a funny and nice thing to do by Law. My deepest apologies for questioning your character sir. Lol

  7. Day Two of fishing. Call him Ismael, as that is his name. Hard guy to find. No real internet info and it was only through another guide fiend that Ish and I fished together for tarpon. And we fished. We spent six hours searching the mangroves and the open bay for tarpon and only managed to hook and lose a few small ones. We searched, bullshitted and worked on my double haul. Finally, at 2:00 we saw a triumph of tarpon rolling in the middle of the bay. 30 or so were exposing their backs as they chased shrimp. We circled around to take advantage of the wind and bang, we were on. Fifteen hookups and five landed in an hour. Back at it tomorrow.

  10. I’d buy FSW’s place and a pair of bolt cutters!!! Lol!!! I’d look for a big chunk in 3S for bow hunting, a decent Oceanside chunk out towards montauk for fishing and hunting and then a county prop with a lake, hills, fields and woods. Dollar and a dream!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  16. Poor arguments couched in witty terms are still poor arguments. Grouse has a point about folks adopting, "if you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullsh!t". I don't see as it's restricted to the left, but then I'm pretty squarely in the middle. I appreciate fancy words as much as any academic, but IMHO if you can't win your argument in plain-speak, then maybe you should rethink your position. I'll walk that statement back to the extent that sometimes there are particulars that require specific knowledge to appreciate - but good use of analogies can substitute for years of education lol. I find that if I assume that there's always somebody who's smarter than me listening, it keeps me honest...

  17. I only ever bought one surf rod....My destroyer was tied up in Newport, RI for a one month tender service... I bought a 9 foot Zebco rod and open face reel at the Navy Exchange for $25...The reel was spooled with 25 lb. mono.... I used that rod/reel to catch my first saltwater fish, stripers, blues, flounder, tautog, plus various shit fish such as bergalls , skates, sand sharks, etc... Caught them from the destroyer piers plus some surrounding jetties... That was June, 1971.....

  18. As I sit here on this snowy day, I just want to encourage all members to follow through on their promises. It’s no fun to be on the wrong end of the disappointment stick. By way of example, one member here who I highly respected promised me one of his dirty old hunting socks so that I could match it up with a single I had lying around. I was soooooo excited. This particular member is known for killing two dandy’s every year. So I assumed if I wore one of his socks, I would kill at least one nice wallhanger every year. Reasonable logic I think. Sadly, despite his promise, the sock never arrived. I will learn to deal with the disappointment but I just hope other members can learn from this. I will not disclose this member’s identity as it does no one any good. He knows who he is. But I do urge others to follow through on their promises. Here is to sunnier days.

  20. Take a ride out I-80 and see Alex Roy at Europtics in PA. He’s the single biggest dealer of Sauer/Mauser/Blaser in the US. (Also Swarovski) He has a 7-08 classic 100 in stock right now. He’ll have a booth at Harrisburg show currently. I’ve owned a couple Sauer rifles. Some from before Blaser bought them ( models 200 and 202) and shot several 101’s and one 100. Right now I have a Dural 3000 Drilling, a 30-06 200, and a 202 with a couple barrels (they interchange on same receiver) New guns have super slick actions, fantastic triggers. Barrels are made in Isny on the same line as Blasers stuff. Very well machined inside and out. One catch is you can’t fit a new barrel ever, the receiver is not threaded, but the average hunter will never shoot out a barrel in a lifetime. Sauer has always been noted for some of the slickest cycling bolt actions around; driven hunts demand quick reloads in much European hunting. For many years I was involved with a group online that used the three brands, and did a couple meet ups and hunts where we shot LOTS of rifles. Much of what I have is European based manufacturers so familiar with in and outs.

  27. A deer or bear will never know the difference if shot with a 7mm-08 or 243, 20grains and 1mm isn’t enough to ever make a noticeable difference. If you don’t reload I haven’t saw 7mm-08 on a shelf in a couple years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  28. The Sauer 100 is the same base rifle as the Mauser m18 (which I bought last year). The Mauser is actually made by Sauer and is off the same production line. I am a lifetime Mauser 98 fan and love my 8x57, but also have long shot and loved the .308. Thus I ended up with the M18. Wonderfully accurate, the best trigger pull I have used (most all the rest of mine are upgraded to at least a Timney target trigger), I love the removable magazine. I found mine for less than half the recommended selling price. Look around, take your time. the 7mm is not as common so probably commands a higher price. I would suggest you try to find the Mauser . As I recall it was only available in .308, 30-06 and .270. Certainly .270 would be a fine 2nd fiddle to the 06, but of course cant carry the same high end bullet weights.

  29. A quick search showed that Sportsman’s Warehouse in Warminster PA stocks the Sauer 100 in some calibers and the 7mm-08 can be ordered. It might be worth a drive to handle one even if it’s a different caliber to see if you like it.

  30. If the bear is standing still and a well placed shot is given, almost any caliber will be able to complete the job, but if not, it's not a good caliber for bear. And yes, I'm joking. Most carry a suitable rifle for the game their hunting and a large caliber sidearm for chance encounters, or one suitable caliber rifle , such as the 30-06.

  34. Not the blower, or my ATV will touch the solid two and a half inches of hard packed ice and sleet now in my driveway. Can't even shovel it, as it's like concrete! Oh well, it'll melt at some point....... Nothing I can do with it, never seen anything like it!

  39. Nothing against either chambering....Place a good bullet from either one in the vitals of a deer and you have meat.. However, with a shot at a less than ideal angle, or on game heavier than deer ( including elk) I think the heavier bullets in the 7MM08 have an advantage...I also think they are more likely to provide a good bloodtrail, should trailing be necessary.

  40. After approximately four months they’ve struck a deal with the NBC affiliate (I think that’s the correct way to phrase it?) Channel 2 WGRZ and they are back on the air. I think I’ll hang onto my over the air antenna I bought though……it worked great.
