Hope this to be my elephant gun; next year around this time maybe I'll see some results in the field.

40 year old that hasn't seen much use. I think the 300 yard leaf to be "optimistic". Getting new stock that'll fit me better, receiver peep sight, new front blade, new trigger.

10ga H and R shooting 3 1/2in slugs pops a wallop, been years since I even seen 10ga slugs available. Although it was by mechanical error, I had a Wards double barrel that fired both 3in shells at the same time, needless to say I got the goose but practically fell out of the boat. The gun has since been repaired.

I think the worst one Ive owned was my Rem 870 12 ga deer gun loaded up with 3 inch Hornady SSTs. It was very accurate, but I hated shooting it. Ive shot a couple of 300s that werent much fun either.

For me the 3 1/2" turkey loads are just too much for my 870. I shot two because I thought I must have not seated the gun right the first time. Nope! Had it perfect, and it rocked me just as much the second time. Traded my brother the rest of the box for what he had left of a box of 2 3/4.

.375 H&H was a completely different recoil. It shook my whole body, but I would shoot that gun again. Done with the big shotgun shells.

My mind must still be rattled, I forgot about Doc Whites 600gr bullets shot out of my White muzzloader, even with only 70 grains of triple seven it knocked me into next week. That's some bear medicine for sure .

Yrs back my buddy picked up a used win 1300. I think it was a 3” mag, been that long.  Anyway, at his first shot patterning it, his ball cap went flying and he looked at the gun and said WTH.. that friggin hurt. Of course I started busting on him, until I shot it... once was enough. That thing was brutal. 

Shot a TC contender chambered for 458 win mag. No break. Was a " reduced" load. Didn't want anything to do with the full load.  

50 cal Barrett wasn't as bad as expected. But it weighed a ton.

The hardest recoiling shoulder-fired weapon that I regularly use is my grandads 16 gauge, Ithaca, featherlight deerslayer.   That thing is built as light as a 20 gauge, but packs a load nearly equal to a 12 gauge.   The light weight and heavy load makes for a nasty combination.   That recoil has never bothered me while shooting deer but is not pleasant on the range.  There, I always use a thick recoil pad clipped onto my shirt, which tames it completely.    I have fired a friend's Ruger #1, in 458 Win mag, and that or any other center-fire rifle feel like a cap-guns in comparison.

The recoil of .357, .41, and .44 magnum revolvers never bothered me at all, but when I briefly installed a pistol grip on a short-barreled, Remington 870 pump shotgun and fired a few 12 gauge slugs, my wrist was sore for a week or so.   All the folks I hear complaining of recoil of rifles and pistols must not have a real grasp of what a light-weight shotgun does in that department.

That's a $505 increase over retail! For that money I'd rather a Barrett. Far more versatile. I like to shoot my elephants from the comfort of another continent

My 535 Mossberg with a 3.5" Turkey load is an absolute cannon. I think the gun weighs around 5 or 6 pounds. Very light gun, plus all that power. I put a red dot on it so I don't have to put my cheek down on the gun. If I don't pay attention my lip and cheek take a serious beating. And I'll end up looking like I left the bar after running my mouth all night. Its the Turkey combo and has the built in "synthetic" cheek plate.  It throws a killer pattern but it throws some killer kicks too lol 

Thought about lengthening the forcing cone to 1.5-2", to see if I can lighten up the recoil some.

Note that the most powerful shotgun loads generate recoil comparable to elephant rifle cartridges. Shooters who would never think of shooting a .416 Rem. Mag. or .450 Nitro Express rifle even once will casually buy a box of 12 gauge, 3-inch Magnum shot shells for hunting season and shoot all 25 shells at a single sitting. nothing exotic here, but 3.5" mags outta my Mossberg 835 win easily. Even with the limbsaver recoil pad lol.

Slugs or turkey loads out of a 12 gauge. I've not shot many rifles, though I'm sure most are not as brutal as that. It's just downright unpleasant shooting them.

There are some youtube videos of people firing a double barrel shotgun's both barrels at the same time, though I am not thinking for the most part they are using target shot. 

I can tell you the most recoil my buddy has ever experienced. We went out earlier this month. He has not shot much and on my muzzle loader he has now learned the virtue of holding a rifle property. 8 stitches later, I have not checked the zero on the gun since to see if his head hitting the scope took it off.

I'm surprised by how many of you guys shoot 3.5's for turkeys, not worth it to me they are just brutal. I have never wounded a turkey and thought if I had a 3.5 he would have died.

I've shot a 375 H&H, 416 Rigby 300 Win mag all in bolt guns. I grew up slug hunting and using a 12 gauge with 2-3/4 and 3" slugs. They all paled in comparison the the only gun that ever numbed my arm for hours. My brother in law had a 10 gauge H&R single shot. He bought slugs for it and we sighted it in. I would opt for a spear over shooting that thing again. that gauge is bad enough but add a slug through a full choke and wow.

I'm sure it isn't. I think it's just a thing. The same reason my car has 400hp. Not necessary, nice to have.

Why would you ever shoot a slug through any choked barrel? Sounds like a recipe for disaster

i don't have anything that has recoil that harsh.  definitely depends on the gun not just the caliber.  My ML loaded to the max with a heavy sabot and 150gr is more of a push and not bad, especially with the Prohunter stock.  My Benelli 12ga pump has shooting 3.5" Hevi-shot Dead Coyote with T-shot isn't even that bad with the comfortech stock.  all my 30-06s don't compare much.  even dad's 7600 30-06 with just a plastic butt plate.

old 12ga pump winchester 1897 with no recoil pad and heavy slugs was not great but the weight of the gun made it tolerable but still not pleasant. did shoot dad's old model 70 300 win mag that had a significantly hard rubber recoil pad and some heavy bullets.  it was enough i noticed and wouldn't want to shoot a lot.  i don't know what it was but i shot an old metal butt plate single shot 10ga shotgun was some portion of the barrel hacked off.  it was some kind of slug and it wasn't pleasant at all.  i managed it but had no intention of shooting it again.  it was brought out basically for the punishment and to see who would shoot it after the first sucker.  so i guess i'm sticking with the trend on here.  some in my inner deer hunting circles won't hunt with anything less than a 45-70 or 338-06 but i know of many family and friends that won't shoot anything more than a 270 or 308.

Plain old lead slugs are fine through a choked barrel. Used my 20ga modified choke barrel on my Mossberg 500 with them for years. I also ran Lightfields through it for a few years before I switched to a rifled barrel and sabots.
