airedale
So I feared the wife wasn't hearing as well as she used to and thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, I called the family Doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor said there is a simple informal test you could perform to give a Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. Here's what you do,' said the Doctor, 'stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.' That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and I was In the den. I says to myself, 'I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens.' Then in a normal tone I ask, 'Honey, what's for dinner?' No response.. So I move closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from the wife and repeat, what's for dinner?' Still no response. Next I move into the dining room about 20 feet from the Wife and asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?' Again no response. So, I walk up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. 'Honey, what's for dinner?' Again there is no response.. So I walk right up behind her. " what's for dinner?' 'HOLY CRAP, Al, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!' ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is supposed to be a light hearted joke but my hearing these days is not to far off from the above, a lot of shooting in my early days without wearing ear protection. My favorite word when answering a question, "WHAT"? Al Edited February 21, 2018 by airedale 10

grampy
My hearing is getting bad too. More and more, I'm starting a sentence with...."what"???? But my insurance does not cover hearing aids. So looks like I'll be saying "what", for awhile. Worse part is, It's getting harder to hear deer walking through the leaves, and turkey's gobbling at a distance.

Jeremy K
I'm flanked by 3 different stamping presses hitting 2000 tons all day . I make sure to stuff my ear plugs in real tight . They test us every year and as far as I know, no hearing loss yet.

Maybe find the part too, wherever that landed.
ny hunter
Years of truck driving loud music and shooting I'd beginning to take its toll on my hearing...
wolc123
Thankfully, it is very good. I probably hear 3 deer first for every one that I see first. That is a big help up in a stand for getting my gun or crossbow in position to make the shot. I always wear hearing protection while shooting firearms on the range except with the bb/pellet guns with which I do the bulk of my target practice. We have all been required to use hearing protection at work over the last (3) years, and it seems like my hearing has gotten better over that time. The nurse at the hearing test remarked that my hearing was very good compared to most whom she had measured. I use it like radar when hunting, and would definitely have to alter my technique without it.

Make sure you aren't constantly pushing wax into your ear canal with the plugs That will also dull your hearing considerably

Don_C
Oh man can I relate to that story! My wife made me go for a hearing test in October and I of course ended up with hearing aids. They changed my life, I wish I would have done it 10 years ago.
Jeremy K
I immediately thought of my dad . We walked into the woods one day for an afternoon hunt ,the whole way in the woods ,his GPS was beeping from low battery, I finally asked him if was gonna shut it off and he had no idea what I was talking about. A lot of them actually enhance hearing as well as protect while shooting. A cheaper version of hearing aid's while hunting.

Except he was using them to find out what the neighbors were cooking. He was sitting on the front porch of the cabin , mostly drunk with the game ears on and a set of binoculars. lol yeah hes a character 2
wooly
Both my parents are half deaf and it's annoying as all hell for the rest of the family or anyone else trying to communicate with them. My father is the worst. He HAD hearing aids and gave them away because he said he doesn't like having things in his ears. The guy he gave them to (my uncle) died, so it doesn't do him much good anymore. Almost funny listening to him talk on the phone with the TV cranked up to 35 in the background. Then he'll start yelling at whoever is on the other end telling them how old he is and they need to speak louder because he can't hear them. Sometimes he gets so frustrated he just hangs up. My mother will sit there after you complete a sentence and just look at you with this blank stare on her face. That's when you know she hasn't heard a single word you said and you'd be better off having a conversation with a rock. A few seconds later she answers with something that is totally unrelated to what you were talking about.... "Mom, what did you do for your birthday?"......"Oh sure hunny I'd love to watch the puppy this Thursday". I don't even have a damn puppy, lol If your hearing ever gets that bad, do yourself and everyone else a favor and get some help for everyones safety. It should be standard check up procedure for the elderly and moderately to full blown senile! I couldn't tell you how many times my old man hasn't heard the back-up cam alarm going off in his truck and damn near backed over somebody in a parking lot. Fortunately for him, and everyone else, he's only managed to take out a few concrete pillars, front bumpers, and garage doors so far. One time while I was up there the smoke detector started going off. Pops laid there napping like a baby, and mom sat there doing her cross stitch as a cloud of smoke filled the room. Someone had accidently brushed up against the stove and turned one of the electric burners on when the wind through the open kitchen window blew a paper towel off the counter that caught fire and landed in the trash can smoldering away. Had no one been there at the time to check out the alarm, the room probably would have been engulfed in flames and they would have cooked right where they were despite all the audible warnings going on around them with no chance for escape. I've noticed my own hearing is on the decline in recent years as well. The list of bodily breakdowns is constantly growing though, so it's not top priority on the list of fixes that will get done anytime in the real near future, but it IS on the list to be checked out eventually since I'm aware of it and not afraid to admit it to myself. Getting old sucks, but there's no sense putting an end to the streak on account of being stubborn and set in your ways.
philoshop
Great story Wooly, though I'm sorry to hear it. No pun intended. You've spun it well!! My Dad spent 55 years as a dentist listening to that high-pitched whine of "the drill" day in and day out. It may not seem like much, but it's important now to speak loudly when asking him a question. It just adds up over time. I've always worn hearing protection while shooting and operating machinery. The eyes are going, but the ears are still pretty good.

Tughill Tamer
My wife says I have selective hearing as she says I only hear the things I want to when she talks. I think she's crazy lol. I have my hearing checked annually at work since I work in a noisy mill and so far the tests have shown a very minor loss over the last 8 yrs.Sent from my XT1650 using Tapatalk
landtracdeerhunter
It has got to the point where I have to use a Walkers Game ear while deer hunting. I have had one to many deer walk up behind me, let out a snort and run off without me knowing it was there. They help a lot and even cut the muzzle blast way down.
