  1. Haley and I were invited to head out to hunt with Doewhacker, so we packed up our stuff Friday evening, and woke up extra early Saturday to head out there. We arrived at the hunting area that Jim sent to me, said hello to Jim and his son, and got our gear on. We headed up the hill and he made a quick call. We heard our first gobble, so we all sat down under a large pine tree and waited while Jim called. No birds showed so we decided to head to another area to call. Jim called and we heard a gobble or two come from the next hill over. We headed in that direction, slowly making our way up a tractor road and keeping an eye out for birds ahead. Eventually we got to a cut corn field and spotted a flock. We all hunkered down along a creek bed and Jim started calling and scratching in the leaves. The gobblers started firing off at us, and began to head in our direction, but never came in for a shot. A couple of hens came in to check Jim out, and the gobblers ended up leaving the field. Heres a quick video I took while getting ready. http://vid95.photobucket.com/albums/l160/jwolfe1976/3CC55154-AD0E-4CDA-81C0-B7C1D6B78BA4_zpsysjtelxh.mp4 After that, we decided to head into town and grab some breakfast. On our way to town we noticed some birds in a field on the other side of the property from where we had been. They were still there on our way back, so we geared up and headed that way. Unfortunately I think we bumped them on the way in, as we saw one turkey run through the woods. The rest of the morning, we hiked the hill calling for birds, but no such luck. Sunday morning, I couldnt get Haley to get out of bed, so Jim and I grabbed our gear and headed to s spot a few minutes from his house where he had gained permission for. He had been seeing birds there every day on the way to work. We setup the blind and decoys and he proceeded to call. We got responses from 2 sets of birds, one that was close by and another at the other end of the field. The turkeys were gobbling up a storm, and then eventually went quiet. Within a few minutes, we could see 3 birds at the end of the field. A hen and 2 toms, then another hen and a jake came out not far from them. We watched them work toward us, the one tom strutting and gobbling at the one hen. Jim called and they kept working slowly toward us. Once the got about half way through the field, 3 jakes showed up out of nowhere on a dead run toward the one hen. The two long beards cut them off and started fighting. After that they all kept working our way. Strutting, gobbling, drumming, hissing, it was really cool to see, as Ive never seen any of that in person. We had a hen 5 feet from the blind for the longest time, and a double bearded jake crossed in front of us at maybe 15 to 20 yards. After an hour and a half from the time we first spotted them, we finally had the long beards in front of us. We figured they were in range, so we got ready to take the shot. Once both of them cleared the rest of the turkeys we pulled the triggers. I watched as the gobbler I shot at fell to his side, with a cloud of dust in front of him, then got right back up and took off. I couldnt believe it. Jims bird took off as well. After all of the turkeys cleared the field, we went and looked, but couldnt really see where the shots had hit the ground. All we found was one feather. Im not 100% on what went wrong, but I think they may have been just out of range and the shot wasnt enough to kill them. I think both of us will be replaying the shots in our heads for a while. Heres a few pics from that morning. We left the area for a couple of hours and came back with Haley and Jims daughter in tow to give it one last try. There was a gobbler out in the field with a hen when we got there. We were able to get to a small hedgerow and tried to call him in, but he kept moving off to the back of the field. He finally got past a rise in the field so we got the girls and snuck as close to the top as we could, and setup the blind and decoys. Jim called, and he gobbled, but kept heading toward the woods, as it was getting pretty hot out. It was a great weekend, with lots of action. Definitely more than I had had on any previous turkey hunt, and now Im hooked, as is Haley. Time to start learning more and gearing up for next spring!

  2. Couldnt get out to hunt, had my 2 year old daughter. but at 1130am we went for a little walk to pull some cards out of the cameras.. sure enough in the middle of the tractor path on our walk, a big ol longbeard steps out and walks right to us! no joke, we are in street clothes and he doesnt have a care in the world that we are even there... After a few moments, he casually walks into the woods about 20 yards in front of us, does a 90, and walks parallel to the path, and passes us at 10-15 yards away!! i couldnt believe it, we were in the wide open .. lol he was just watching us as he poked on through.. i could not believe it, that stuff never happens while wearing camouflage and purposely hunting! oh well lol.. it was cool to witness, especially having my little girl with me, on our way to ride the tractor and till some plots for the beans..

  5. I don't know much of the ins and outs of qdm and the like. The large farm I hunt and many surrounding though have a complex set of hunting rules ,kill as many does as you wish and only bucks wider then the ears, and that scale kinda slides a bit for bow..... and first timers get to shoot what they want , and "mistakes" seem to happen as well . Here's what we got ( a small sample ), most of the trail cam ones were killed as well . And no.

  6. We had a photo of one a week ago where I mentioned to Phade she looked pregnant. This week, she has a very tiny fawn in tow. Pretty cool. Plus Phade now has his target button buck all lined up. lol

  7. Was supposed to take my girlfriend out to try and get her a bird at my cousin's property but she was a little too sleepy to get up today..... So I decided to wing it and try on the property out back. All was quiet, I gave my flydown routine and a little soft yelping with some silence in between. About 5:50 I heard a distant gobble so I answered with a few yelps, paused for 30 seconds and gave couple more yelps, instant gobble back and a lot closer! I couldn't tell where it came from (had fields to my back and I was on a shelf with sloping terrain that curved around in front of me, down to another shelf). I waited 45 seconds or so and gave 3 yelps and another instant gobble, sounded like it was to my right. Problem is, I had a pine branch to my immediate right and knew if this bird swung hard right I woulda been caught with my pants down.... I shoulda known better than to sit where I did. I made a quick game-time decision and decided to move 15 yards to my right and face to the right where I knew I could get a shot. I moved, waited a minute and gave a few yelps... the gobble was so loud I almost jumped, problem is that it was over my left shoulder! If I didn't move, the gobble woulda been straight out in front of me. &*^%!!! rookie move! I got the gun up, clicked off the safety and watched for him. I caught a glimpse of him come into my view at about my 7-8 o'clock and he was looking hard. He was about 50 yards away and only problem was that there was a clump of trees between us. All he had to do was walk left or right and I coulda fired. I watched him for a minute and I heard another bird give a small "tut". Watched a hen walk right over to him and take him back down over the bank. Out of desperation I fired off some heavy cuts and yelps.... he gobbled 5-6 times in a row, to the point that he ran out of breath. I waited, heard him gobble again but he was further, then further, and eventually all was quiet. Dang.... got about as close to getting a bird as I could today without actually pulling the trigger. I will be in that general area tomorrow, but maybe 50-60 yards further into the woods. I'm praying he'll be roosted close by again.

  11. Tagged out yesterday on a Jake at 6:15. Was set up where I wanted to be by 4:40 and again no gobbling heard at all. Then, he came in quietly to a combination of some yelps, cuts, and clucking. No gobbling to alert me that he was coming but everything was so dry I heard him approaching from the crunchy leaves until I saw his bright red head bobbing around looking for the hen he was hearing. Came into about 35 yards before he presented a good shot. Been a quiet season as far as gobbling activity but I ended up tagging out for the season after a two year slump. Good luck to all still out there!

  12. Killed this one this morning. He fell in love with my aluminum pot. Gobbled a bunch on his way in. I did not have to do much convincing. A few clucks purs and leaf scratches. He was hooked.

  13. Gobbling is great and it indicates a presence of toms in the area but it sure doesn't guarantee a kill. This youth season on L.I. the first morning it poured..I mean torrential flooding rains...huge puddles and trees dripping...If I wasnt 100% certain there was good birds in the area I probably would never have ventured out...At 6 am we had a minor break in the weather and I did some light calling on a Matthews slate..by 6:20 my youth hunter had a bird on the ground..a good bird..big hooks and a 11" beard.Probably the dominate bird of the area..No gobbling that morning what so ever..came charging in completely silent to the decoys and totally trashed a pretty boy strutter decoy before getting a load of #6 20 ga federals in the face..The next morning was beautiful calm and clear...birds gobbling like mad from the roost and on the ground...no kill that day..A hen came in leading 4 strutters with full fans and just didn't like the setup and putted and pulled them all away..Moral of the story....rain or shine... gobbling or silent ...GO HUNT!!

  22. ...and neither will the majority of deer hunters in NY. This idea seems to be just the latest and greatest attempt at, so called, deer management since the conversion of "Quality" Deer Management to deer farming. Maybe we ought to get back to thinking about all aspects of whitetail management instead of concentrating on just bigger bucks, less doe, or bigger and better food plots and trail cams.

  24. I gave some soft yelps and clucks at around 630. A short time later a nice tom and a hen came scratching along, probably 70 yards or so. I don't think I called them, I think they just happened to be on a certain route. I believe they are the same pair I saw a few days ago, in the same area. They slowly made their way out into the fields, ignoring my calls, then slowly moved out of sight. it was cool to watch them for a while. No gobbling at all this morning. I did find this 140 class shed while I was poking around. I hope to find the other so I have a set of killer rattling horns this fall... LOL!!!

  25. Let me tell you ...this is no joke!! I've been talking to people. She has a real chance! When I have to say ,I am now careful how I approach getting info, then you know it's bad. Hilary has a danm good chance. I had one Elder lady say she wished someone would shoot Trump. She wasn't kidding and you should have seen her face...Spooked me a bit. Then said she may vote for Mickey mouse over either choice....I'm getting a lot of that. Kills me when they say he's a flip flopper and liar...seriously!!! WTH would you call her!!!(note HER,opposed my private reference) If I had my doubts about God and the Devil, well she has made me a believer. The deal she made with the Devil is working. He's managed to blind people to the sneaky snake in the grass she has always been. I have been on the, vote for neither road..in fact the last election. I have the same feeling this time around as well..but the worst of 2 evils is just beyond evil...Trump will have my vote I said months ago that the Republicans managed to shoot themselves in both feet this time...Their reaction(hissy fit) to Trump made that clear...Now it's a matter of praying they didn't manage to put her in office

  26. The NRA stated in their endorsement of Trump why Hillary would be a terrible President and are simply encouraging all NRA members to vote for Trump as a vote against Hillary. Not voting at all, or voting for a third party candidate, could actually help Hillary win. That's why all gun owners should vote for Trump, even if it hurts to do so.

  34. Aluminum calls are one of the best surfaces. Used one from another maker 2 times since I had it. One longbeard one Jake both taken by youth hunters. A dif aluminum by same maker resulted in my younger daughter spooking bird in range by trying to swat bug away. Older daughter had gun up n ready to shoot when this happened. Aluminum works. Could tell you stories all day long about the surface. Seems to make em gobble when they really didn't want to

  41. had a blast Wednesday after I got to camp, went and checked a local public hunting property and saw a strutter with a couple hens. ended up working on him for 5 hours moving set ups 7 different times to finally break down the hen and got him into 20 yards only to let him walk since it was only a 2 year old. after letting him walk off and clear the area I eased out and headed to a different farm, watched 1 good bird and a satellite gobbler work their way into the woods an hour before dark. I was parked and walking in by 3 am. heard one gobble off in the distance while it was still dark i figured it to be around 4:45 am. the moon finally sank behind the ridge as daylight arrived and not a peep out of either gobbler. the crows had been calling for a while and it was now really light and still not a peep, I had to get up and make something happen. I eased up on top and down a mowed path towards a meadow but just had that feeling that I needed to back off and back up around the bend and get across the path into the woods. I have learned to trust my instincts. I am now in the woods but its really noisy dry, I scratch along about 40 yards and stop right next to a large oak tree, turkey sign is clearly evident as well as the remnants of a bumper mast crop last fall. I ease the burville bomber out and give a few clucks and soft yelps,,,,GGGOOOOOOOOOOBBBBBBLLLE that about blew my hat off. they were close 80 yards or less. I hit the base of the tree and made a scratching sequence as I cleared a spot at my feet and they hammered that. I give them a few soft clucks, purrs and yelps and it sounds like they are in the meadow, why they would want to walk through soaking wet grass and not through the woods is beyond me. guns up eyes searching as I see a head pop up over the little rise from the meadow, a hen, she walks right to me and starts feeding, clucking and purring, even though I have watched turkeys feeding for hundreds of hours I am still amazed that they can swallow acorns whole, the hen is 5 yards from me and now the gobblers are hammering and definitely in the woods. the hen walks out behind me clucking and purring now I can make final adjustments on gun location. just in time as they have not gobbled in a few minutes and they step out from behind a huge oak tree at 15 yards. the problem was I was on the satellite gobbler not the shooter and being that close there was no way to get on him and have the time to make a precise shot since the pattern is really small at that range. I had to let them stand there for probably close to 3 minutes until they started clucking, then they started getting nervous since they couldn't see the hen that had been talking, they turned and started walking away as the shooter walked behind a tree I moved the gun to the right about 4 inches but they were still side by side and I didn't want to kill them both. finally the satellite walked behind a tree and now at 25 yards I eased the safety off and as he stretched up as if taking one last look for the hen I took the shot. Tag 1 filled shortly after 6 am. 10 1/4" paintbrush beard both spurs broken 1 1/8" and 1" a whopping 15 lbs.

  43. Doewhacker and I just had 2 long beards come in with 4 jakes and 2 hens. They put on one hell of a show. Fighting, gobbling, strutting, drumming and hissing all the way in to the point where we misjudged the distance and spit dust on them. Been sitting here waiting for them to get out of the field so we can leave and come back later and try again. Maybe we should have brought our jesus bullets with us instead of these turkey loads. Next time...
