  1. These are literally the first shots from my grandson and his new bow. Finished getting it set up for him today. Not bad! He will be taking his bow course September 17th. He still has lots of practicing to do before hunting season. One of the proudest moments in my life will be when I watch him take his first deer! Thanks again Tacks!

  4. He was 83 years old and suffering with Alzheimer's disease. A very funny guy in movies such as "Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles", "The Producers", and "The Frisco Kid". He was a class act who knew how to get a laugh just by laughing at himself. RIP, my friend. Be with Gilda.

  7. Went out at 6 am this morning in my buddies Nitro bass boat onto Lake Erie. Weird wind again and quite choppy even inside the breakwall. Jigged some crayfish and 3" Gulp minnows. Buddy caught 3 smallies , I caught one small one and daughter blanked. Tried to get out to fish the structures out at beginning of the river but boat kept coming out of the water. So we checked out the worlds largest rubber duck. Holy smokes , people on land snapping pics , kayaks everywhere and this thing is huge. Looking forward to fall and fishing the mouth of the Cattaragus for steelies Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  9. Teaching him the three point anchor. Kisser button, tip of nose and ear lobe. Proper grip and form. He soaks it all in. Good student. I'm no archery instructor but know the basics to get him going. I've been playing around with bows for 30+ years. So far all good! Having a good bow is a huge benefit too.

  10. Many boaters are clueless today . My folks built a cottage on Port Bay in 1,959 , I grew up there every weekend and two weeks each summer . if you saw a guy fishing you gave him room or if you could not you throttled back , same for skiers , you gave them room . iv been going out in boats since '59 ( ok I was one then) but you get the idea . Today's boaters I call grinning idiots , they swamp you, come to,close to,your kid in the water as you prepair to,pull, them skiing and smile and wave as they pass. They have no,idea what the " stand down boat means " let alone who has the right away. A few years back we almost got hit by a giant boat on Lake Ontario , they came from behind off to my left , only two, boats out there , my daughter started to yell, I looked and turned the wheel just in time really . i started to draw my .40 cal,Glock but commen sense and my wife stopped me . I did make note of the boats name and spent two summers searching marinas for,it. im a patient man with lots of free time and a cord less drill ......

  13. Bucks I don't care every year we see pics of some mighty fine buck and big doe ....The cams may be seeing more than the recover pics show...but that just means they are getting older or hit by vehicles. All the comparison we see to other states is just ...foolish We should all be happy with what NYS has and proud that in most instances...we are seeing this due to volunteer restraint

  14. Wife and I love living in upstate ny , hunting, fishing , rolling countrysides , the change of seasons , etc . It's the ( insert dirty word) politicians that ruin this state . And yes ny has some excellent potential for big bucks but in the same breath we don't need the d.e.c telling us what a person can and can't shoot .

  16. This article, written by Rich Grassi, is a history of gun control and 2nd Amendment infringements from their beginnings in this country. Worth a read: The 2nd Amendment was ratified in 1791. Until the 20th Century, there was no real federal attempt to infringe upon that right – that was not true at state and local levels. Those can be discussed in another venue. In 1934, allegedly due to the lawlessness predictably brought about by another senseless federal regulation – prohibition of alcohol – there was an attempt to restrict handgun ownership by a federal mandate requiring fingerprinting, photography, notification and approval of local law enforcers and the payment of a $200 tax stamp. That didn't happen, though certain firearms – so-called 'short barrel' rifles and shotguns, machine guns, suppressors, trick guns (guns hidden in items like canes) were placed under that restriction. If a little is good, a lot should be 'better, in 1938, Uncle Sam licensed gun dealers through the Commerce Department for a $1 annual fee – back when a dollar was worth a real 100 cents. Sales to persons convicted of certain crimes or who "lacked a permit" were prohibited.Things were quiet though there was a constant drumbeat for more infringements until 1968. Using political assassinations as an excuse, licensing dealers, detailed record keeping requirements, and prohibiting sales of handguns to someone from out-of-state (relative to the licensee), to felons, to those determined to be 'mentally incompetent,' drunks and drug users. The "prohibited possessor" class was established. No "mail order" purchases of firearms were allowed, age limits on purchase of guns and ammo, records for ammo purchases and the federal "transfer" form was instituted. Four years later, ATF was created because we needed more federal police outside of Constitutional authority. In 1986, two infringements passed. One was the stupidly named "law enforcement officers protection act" that prohibited manufacture, sale or import of KTW ammunition: the only round that met the requirements of the ban on handgun ammo that would perforate concealable body armor – and was, incidentally, only sold to police officers who were prevented from having patrol rifles or shotgun slugs accessible while on duty. So much for "making us safe."The similarly stupidly named firearms owners' protection act had the sole relevant impact of preventing non-government purchases of 'machine guns' made after 1986. There were other elements of the statute, none relevant to this piece. In 1990, the 'crime control act,' named for something government is uniquely unable to do, allowed the US Attorney General to establish "gun-free school zones" (violent criminal empowerment zones), made illegal any possession and discharge of firearms – stopping all in-school marksmanship programs – and outlawed assembly of certain semiauto rifles or shotguns fromlegally imported parts. We also got Brady which instituted a five-day waiting period and background check before a licensee can allow transfer to a non-licensed person ("citizen"). NICS was mandated in this law.In 1994, we got the Clinton Gun Ban. There was a silly name for it, but as it didn't describe the intent, the name escapes me. This banned manufacture, transfer, possession and importation of a new class of guns, named by Josh Sugarman – "assault weapons." (sic) They also banned boxes with springs – magazines that held too much ammunition. The ban sunset in 2004. So after this list of "compromises" and "common sense gun regulations," just how much better off are we today than we were in, say, 1933? Well, we have the slowest recovery from an economic downturn in our history, we have unenforced laws against illegal entry into the US by aliens, we have 10,000 "refugees" from the Middle East. Every time there is a shot fired in the US, the "news media" component of the elites inside the Beltway tells us that the US is the most violent country in the world, the most racist and terrible in every category: that's really something as the US is composed of divergent peoples and cultures from around the globe – the widest diversity there is in any developed nation. The "sporting purposes" exception in the 1968 Gun Control Act and laws that follow are a joke. The Second Amendment failed to mention that as a reason to enumerate that Natural Right -- and those "weapons of war," so-called by politicians who seek to scare the electorate, are nothing more than firearms that are often used for sporting purposes -- shown here on a varmint eradication job in the American West. So why can't they pass more infringements? They have academia, big media in terms of news and entertainment, absolute control of social media and big money interests like Soros. What's the hold up?Gun control at the national level is toxic. It's not some 'gun lobby.' Take the two biggest sellers in the business – Ruger and S&W, add Freedom Group, and you still have less than the annual rounding error of the auto industry.Estimates of the gun owning population of the US top at around 130 million. Only five or so millions of those are in the NRA – the alleged lobbyist for the "gun industry." Those on the inside know that the trade group of the outdoor industry is the National Shooting Sports Foundation, but apparently that organization is harder for the political class and big media to demonize – maybe it's because NSSF has four letters and that's too long for prohibitionists to remember.A few factors have creeped into the equation. One is that the prohibitionists have used the same tired, disproved arguments time and time and time again. The same tired old song is obscured by the fog of boredom and the obvious lie. During the expansion of near-nationwide concealed carry, there were predictions of "blood running in the streets," "gunfights over parking places," and "no good can come from this."Wrong on each and every point. That did not go unnoticed. The first real federal gun ban, the 1994 Clinton ban, gave lie to the story "we're not going to ban your guns." Sorry, but that's just crap, a plain lie. They proved it, it was nothing we did. As prices for standard capacity magazines and "preban" guns soared, the ban sunset started the biggest run on so-called "assault weapons" imaginable. People who wouldn't have had an AR15 stuffed in their . . . duffle bag now just had to have one. It was the same old story: "If they don't want us to have something and they're so much smarter than we are, then it's something we must have!"The social media that was supposed to move the political opinion needle toward the (not so) liberal, (not very) progressive side actually moved people more to the middle of extremes. What we're seeing is pro-individual, anti-government leanings; so called social liberal, economic conservative. Even the Libertarian Party – never a good barometer of true libertarian thought -- misread the tea leaves when they anointed Gary Johnson and "Gun Ban Bill" Weld as their candidates.Add the "aw-shucks" down-home regular guys on internet video, the Gun Blast crew and Hickok45 to name a couple, and people weren't seeing guns the way DC and Hollywood wanted them to see guns. So much for the statist nature of social media . . .Those same young – and old – people slammed Congress after Sandy Hook every time talk of infringements came up. That is not likely to change in the near term as one of two major parties in this country has firearms infringements and prohibitions as a plank in the party 'platform.' That and the Occupant's demands for "action," including his extra-Constitutional 'executive orders,' have pushed more and more of those 130 million gun owners to hammer Congress with one voice: no more gun laws.So we have gun owner "compromises" going back to 1934 – when do the prohibitionists get to "compromise?" Well, that's not going to happen. Now they're demanding a suspension of due process by insisting that people on a 'no-fly' list be prohibited possessors without benefit of a hearing or by having a lengthy, costly appeals process. They're demanding the Clinton gun ban be re-instituted in an "improved" form with no "grandfather" provisions and including government seizures of prohibited firearms. They're wanting to seize guns from veterans who need assistance with their financial affairs and from the elderly who have help with their financial issues – because those classes of people have no need for the ultimate force option in self-defense.You think they're not after your guns? You're delusional and not part of the mainstream. In fact, this political year shows that the elites in government, politics and big media (news and entertainment) are not part of the mainstream – and on the wrong side of history.-- Rich Grassi

  19. My wife and I started a new archer yesterday, he was 23 years old, never had a bow in his hand. He now has a older Alpine bow 2012 and a doz Easton carbon arrows that I gave him and a finger tab. Set the bow up at 50 lbs and 30 inch draw. He tried a release and could not get it to work for him. With the tab he was hitting a 4 inch circle on a bag target at 12 yards. He left saying he will as time permits work with the bow, as I also gave him a bag target top take home. Take you Walmart for the plastic bags that fill the target bag He is my grandgirl boy friend. My wife and I told him that with archery, you start a life long fun sport

  22. We got it all set up today! Added a whisker biscuit pro, a kisser button, cut arrows to length and backed off the draw weight to 55 pounds. The bow came with an awesome spot hog sight. Got everything squared up and I shot it and made a couple small sight adjustments. And handed him his bow. These are his first three arrows! Our local deer population should be very afraid this year! He is so happy! I'm so proud. Thanks Tacks.

  24. How about that joker refusing to stand during the National Anthem ? AS reprehensible as I find this behavior, it is a free country and I fully support his right to refuse to stand if he does not want to. However, the fans have a right to express their feelings also..I hope they boo the a**hole off the field the next time he appears.

  27. I hate these threads............. There are so few 4.5 year old bucks killed each year that who knows WTH one looks like on the hoof? For all the bucks I've killed AND the bucks killed in the camp I hunt out of, RARE is the buck that has been aged at 4.5 or older. These are of course deer that have been aged by DEC biologists and field technicians. How rare you might ask?? I've killed plenty of 3.5 year old, ZERO 4.5 year old and exactly one 5.5 year old buck. I'll stick my neck out and say 3.5 years old. Well, right now he isn't 3.5. That's what he'll be when he is killed in November.

  30. The number of steps you'll need will be determined by how high you'll set the stand and also on your comfort level of climbing from one step to another. I set my stand just about perpendicular to the steps for ease of getting in and out of the stand. I also set one step a little higher than the platform of the stand and another even higher on the opposite side to hold onto, so I can get above the stand and then step down onto the platform. Everyone has a preferred method and this is the one that has worked best for me. Remember that as the weather gets colder you'll be wearing heavier clothing and climbing won't be as easy as in the early season, so your steps should be placed at a comfortable distance for climbing with bulkier clothing.

  31. Dumb question . Why do bears tend to lump up trail cams ? Are they Amish and don't like their pictures taken ? And that stems another question . What happens to the soul of an Amish person if they accidentally get their pic taken by a trail cam ? And back to question : I say bear as well

  32. Use RF to determine yardage to various trees in the 20 - 40 yd range where you might shoot when there is sufficient light in the AM. In a pinch - try to estimate by looking at 10yd increments. Tape will work too. I have only actually ranged one buck from the stand, the one I killed last year but he was running away at 68yds when I ranged him so it didn't really help. Luckily he came back to some grunts.

  33. It is amazing the depths that the young people have fallen. Uptown by voting for Hitlary you are say that the Constitution of this country no longer matters, that it is ok for the government to take away the very rights you are using to push your agenda. The problem with that is you will lose those rights and ALL the others if Clinton gets into office. The fact you would want a criminal, liar and quite possibly a traitor to this country (Hillary Clinton) in the White House rather than a business man who knows how to get things done is mind boggling. Why stop there? Lets get Charles Manson or Ted Bundy in the Oval Office. There is no logic to your post therefore you are simply trolling for effect. I would suggest we the rest of the forum ignore anything Uptown has to say in the future.

  37. It was a nice morning to get out, glad you and your daughter had fun. I went to Silver Lake today with a buddy (friend of Lee's) and although we got a very late start, we had fun too. Only got a pile of small perch, a couple rockies and a couple largemouth. No keepers as they would have been poached in my live well by the time we pulled the plug. 79 degrees on Silver Lake too.........lots of jet skis, pontoon boats and regular old power boats to get the boat rocking like my old p/u truck Friday nights at the drive-in years ago.

  38. I'm old school I grab an antler and place one foot in front of the other , rinse and repeat. Hunting farm land sometimes I can drive the Buick close so the drag is only a couple hundred yards, but sometimes it's half a mile . Carts don't work as it's often plowed fields of thick mud or heavy brush. I'm happy if I come out the correct side of the brush.....sometimes I step out and say corn? There's no corn on the east side of the brush ! Im 57 with two bad shoulders a pinched nerve in neck, arthritis in both feet and hands and that's just the short list . You youngsters need to step it up. Id call for help except I hunt mostly week days and hunt mostly mornings

  40. Batteries and cards are more often the problem than most people realize. More than the actual cams having issues. You'd be surprised at how many people see a battery meter at 50% and wonder why night images are not being taken or why the cam missed someone walking by. Just because you can squeak out 6 mos or a year on a set of batteries, doesn't mean that the cam is performing at 100% of its ability in months 5 or 6, or 10, etc.

  41. I use my treestand harness to drag. When I get tired of that, I'll just tug away on the horns for a little while until my back needs a break, then switch back to the harness. I don't get excited or in a rush about LONG drags, but dragging is the exclamation mark on the end of the hunt for me! That's when my own sense of accomplishment, and my respect for the animal really sets in. After all the time, energy, preparation, and effort that leads up to killing a deer, it just seems appropriate to me that getting him out of the woods shouldn't be the easiest part. I'll take plenty of breaks along the way to snap a few pics and just to look back and admire my trophy in his natural environment one last time. In some strange way, dragging is like a primitive ritual to me that I really do enjoy! Sometimes I'll even take the scenic route home!
