  2. Well I bit the bullet and got a new PSE Stinger X compound bow. It's the 70# model desert tan and had them set it up at 55 lbs at 27", I could pull that easily. Only shot 6 arrows so far but could put all 3 in 3-4" at 20 yards! Had to have a "kisser button" added as I kept droping my grip to heel down position (long bow habit). That helped even out the sights issue. Very confidence building, as some of you may recall I tried to rehab my 1980's Hoyt ram hunter last year and it kept throwing arrows into the dirt at 20 yds no matter what we did with sights and rests. Convinced the limbs were recovering at differing rates, it is old. But my stick bows! Gosh, I feel like such a heathen liking this compound bow thing!!

  3. I took my nephew with me to fish Saratoga Lake yesterday. He's only 20 but an accomplished tournament angler with three wins under his belt. We caught a bunch of fish, he caught more. I caught a few nice ones he caught the biggest. All my spots did produce fish, he told me why they were there. I used my usual baits that always work for me , he used totally different baits. In the end, I learned some stuff and we equally had a great time!

  8. I wouldn't use that in any situation. Heating and bending metal will change the properties of it and you are using a step outside it's intended purpose. I am not saying it won't work and keep you from hitting the ground but the products that are designed and manufactured for the purpose of fall arrest have calculations and safety factor that are ASSURED to work. I appreciate the testing you did but I suggest you look into how fall arrest systems are tested. The "shock" of a fall is much different loading than what you tested. In my mind having an anchor point that MAY work is almost worse than no anchor point at all. With a false sense of security we may do what we wouldn't when not tied in.

  10. I wonder how old you are ,because I can't imagine an older (length of time hunting) saying that...That is if I am catching your meaning in that...I would stop hunting if I knew every year I went out, I would shoot one of those big bucks I get pics of in the spring and summer...Well usually get pictures of that it... Explain to me what the fun in that would be? Now if I needed meat ,I could always go out for and hour or so and pop the first doe I see..but that's not hunting to me I could do that out the computer window...Which is why I don't always go to the stands I am absolutely sure they will be at a given time during the day...and sometimes I say to heck with the wind and coin toss where to go...If I wanted ducks in a barrel ...I'd spend less money and a whole lot less time and go to the arcade or state fair. I can tell you I wouldn't quit hunting if I shot a nice buck every year, why would you? It's not entirely about killing deer, it's about sunrises, beautiful days, time with friends, changing leaves, the unknown etc... and how does it concern you if someone else has a different outlook on hunting? I set my goal on killing a nice buck every fall, if I could do it every year I'd be ecstatic...

  12. Nothing wrong with killing fawns and yearlings IMO. It's probably more beneficial to the rest of the herd to take out the weakest link that is most vulnerable to disease, predation, and starvation. A good number of those fawns and yearlings may not make it to see their second birthday anyhow, while the next older class bucks have already proven they know how to make it through a season or two. Not really beneficial to take out a proven survivor, only to let the weaklings that will be the first to drop dead over browse a property before they die anyhow. That just takes away from the rest of the remaining healthy herd and makes it harder on them as they head into the most stressing winter months. So even though I personally prefer to kill a nice buck of at least 2 1/2 year old or better at this point of my hunting, there was a time when I would kill the first deer I saw no matter how small it was. They don't make for the most jaw dropping field photos, but I've got an album full of them anyhow and have no issue with guys killing fawns and yearlings. It does more for the overall health of thedeer herd opposed to the guy who eats his tags year after year waiting on a mega-buck.

  13. It's been a hectic summer with my wife and I getting our living room remodeled. We added a wall to the living room and created an office for me that attaches to my work room. Few pics... Added a couple of drying walls The work room still needs some work. I plan on doing that this spring after I make some money of the venture. Not sure about what I'm going to do with the walls yet, need to add a sink too... Horn porn!!! We'll see how it goes. I have lots of connects around here that are promising to bring me their deer...lol

  22. I love fall and winter too much to move south but the heat wouldn't bother me. You get used to being in an oven after a while, I learned that this summer at work. I have always worked in food service as a manager but the current operation I run is by far the hottest environment I have found. Turns out Jails don't have AC in their kitchens, thankfully my office does (though it struggles). It gets over 100 anytime the temp goes up outside but when I leave it feels great when its 92 outside. lmao I love Maine but really want to explore the western states when its my turn to move. I cant say that family would be a reason to stay or move for me other than my kids, but that's me.

  25. Wow some great advice here! I have shot arrows that cost 15$ each and 8$ arrows. Unless you are shooting competition usually you will not notice a difference. I mark arrows that seem to drift left or right, high and low and see if they keep shooting that way, most of the time it is me and not the arrow. Number your fletching to know which arrows you favor for hunting season. ADKHunter it sounds like you purchased lighter arrows, that will pick your speed up. ok some of my first shots. Aug 4th first arrow was bottom left, sorry so blurry. I found adding an extra fletching causes me to shoot left, lol. 20 yards. Aug 7th Field Shoot 36 yards first shot was Black and purple fletching at 8 O'clock. Aug 14th start of the field shoot championship. 36 Yards Top Right green knock. Aug 17th 50 yards. I think the first shot was the top arrow, buddy Hector is the one red knock. Today 10 Yards bottom right. For me its all about form and slowing down my shot sequence. When I shoot every other day my form holds well but overshooting like when I did the field shoots was a bit much for a 65lb bow and 112 shots! Big difference compared to a 30 round 3D shoot. Now that I feel my form is back I will switch to 3D targets and get the bow tuned for broadheads. Keep in mind bad form will cause bad paper tuning so be sure your form is good when testing.

  30. I have many times had friends ask me why I get so fired up about squirrel hunting and think I am a bit nuts spending so much money on higher end 22 rifles. Actually there was a time I pretty much thought the same way. I became enlightened many years ago after a successful Deer hunt. That summer I purchased a beautiful Ruger Number 1A in 243 Winchester, like a pretty girl I just loved looking at that gun. Mounted a nice 2X7 Redfield Widefield scope and spent summer working up the perfect Deer busting handload and getting that rifle dialed in, man I was psyched for opening day. The second day of season on my stand out walks a nice Buck at 50 yards, Bang and down he went. The excitement lasted for a few minutes then the realization came that I was "all done" and it would be a year before me and that Number 1 be in the woods again, I almost wished I had missed the Buck, Bummer! Well I thought there was Squirrel hunting so I could still hit the woods with my trusty Savage single shot 22 or a shotgun. Didn't sound that appealing until I thought why the heck not buy a really fine 22 rifle and get after the squirrels with it. That is just what I did, I purchased a Remington 541S and never looked back. Six month season, up to six Squirrels per day action, action, action, and I get to actually pull the trigger on a fine rifle or shotgun more than once. I have since accumulated several nice rimfire rifles through the years and I get to use them all if I want, What is not to love about Squirrel hunting? I will be in the woods this week for sure. Al

  31. As a full time taxidermist that has been in business since 1985, I will try to clear up some things that have come up in this thread. I personally want every mount that comes through the shop to be finished and paid for as quickly as possible. That being said, I prefer to do all the big game in one block, birds in another block, etc., as they are different processes, and if I ping-ponged back and forth, I would never get anything done. When bears and deer start coming in , they are skinned, eyes, ears, noses turned, fleshed and salted. Then commercially tanned. This usually takes a few months to get back from the tannery. Then the mounting process starts with the first one dropped off, continuing until the last one dropped off. I try to do them in this order with a few exceptions, like if someone needs it back due to illness, special occasion, etc. What some people don't realize, is that there are quite a few steps in the process per mount. We don't just pop a head outta the freezer and mount it up monday, and it's ready tuesday. Here's how it goes in my shop: 1. Customer drop off, write reciept, choose pose. 2. Skin animal, turn ears, lips, eyes, nostrils, flesh and salt. 3. Deliver hides to tannery. 4. Pickup hides from tannery. 5. Match up capes with antlers. Arrange order of mounting, first in, first out. 6. Order appropriate forms, eyes, etc., for weeks worth of heads. 7. Match forms to customers animal as they arrive. 8. Actual mounting process. 9. Drying time. 10. finish work: pull pins, fix blemishes, etc. 11. airbrush eyes, nose, etc. 12. Groom mount. 13. Mail completion letter to customer. Thats just for big game, and that's if everything goes smoothly, not taking into account that some guys cut the cape wrong/short, slit the throat, shoot it in the head,..the list goes on. Multiply this time frame for 100 deer heads per year, plus bears, small game, ducks, upland, turkeys, etc...as you can see, time is a rare commodity While I am waiting for my tanning to be completed, I normally start working on birds: 1. Customer drop off, choose pose, properly tag waterfowl. 2. skin bird, de-fat, de-grease. 3.. Wash bird. 4. Tumble/dry bird skin. 5. Actual mounting process/carding. 6. Drying time. 7. Pull pins/carding. 8. Paint bills/feet. 9. Mail completion letter to customer. Keep in mind that customer drop offs/pick ups take time out of the day also, as well as display base work, and getting supplies. There isn't alot of down time in running a taxidermy studio. Besides deer and birds, You also have bears, turkeys, african, exotic, rugs, and fish. There is ALWAYS work being done on SOMETHING.. Keep in mind that if you have a week of deer heads planned, and 3 guys show up at the shop on Monday afternoon after a boar hunt with a bunch of hogs they want mounted, everything else just got bumped. Those animals need to be caped/prepped for the tannery before they spoil. Don't feel bad though, because when you dropped off your archery buck in October, somebody else got bumped so I could prep your critter. I usually tell my customers that drop off a deer during rifle season that it will be ready over the summer. Then of course there are the problem customers that you have to chase around for weeks/months/years to pickup and pay for thier mounts. The time I wasted on thier mount could have been better spent on yours. Some guys get in over thier head by charging low prices and they get bombarded with work and cannot keep up. These guys usually don't stay in the business long. Hope this clears up some of the time frame questions...

  32. So True! I think after a guy has taken 100's of deer and piles of bucks of all sizes hunting turns into more of the term hunting. Find a mature buck or two and go get them, accept nothing less and eat the tag if need be. To me if a buck does not make me gasp the second i lay eyes on him its just not a big deal. Still sit back and enjoy the show and enjoy the moment but to pull the trigger on a smaller buck just does not do it any longer. Meat is there about any time needed in places i hunt. Now for a young hunter coming up thru the ranks needs to enjoy all the stages of hunting. They to will most likely turn into a trophy hunter some day.

  35. Shoulder....I tend to pull to the rt if not on my game(tired)...shoot the shoulder and they drop...because I have always shot shoulder, It some times happens in bow. That drops them like a rock as well...but with archery I aim tight behind shoulder. I take enough deer I really do not care if a little shoulder meat it ruined nothing goes to waste the boys love it and all the rest of the bones as well. PS.... hunting steep terrain...you bet they can go a heck of a long ways with a lung hit.. lost a couple at camp Basically dead deer running 100 yrds or more...no recovery rights for ANY hunters...can't blame him ...

  36. My hunting year goes like this: Starts of in January scouting for shed season...Late January - Early April is primetime shed season...April mornings are spent scouting for turkeys...May will always mean turkey season to me...June begins trail cam season and evenings spent glassing/scouting the local bucks...followed by bow season, gun season, muzzleloader season and wraps up will post season trail cam inventory and the agonizing wait for shed season to get here again. There is no down time...I thoroughly enjoy all of it!!!!!

  44. So....if that deer looks to be 3 in the pictures that I posted (based on most of the responses), then that would make him 4 this year as the pictures are from last August. Once he lost velvet, he disappeared and we didn't catch him on camera again. We just got cams back out last week and haven't checked them yet, but I hope to have pictures of him from this year so we have a little more history with the buck and can make a more accurate guess as to his age.....Or, someone thought that a wide 3 year old 8 point was big enough and killed him last fall...I know that I would have if presented the opportunity .

  45. Don't let them fool you, they don't like it either. I moved down to NC right after high school and the first thing I noticed was that everyone there travels from one air conditioned space to another. Leave your central air house in your AC car to your Ac job. (Unless your a unlucky soul and have to work outside). They all complained about the heat as much as I did and stay inside as much as possible. I like being outside so to me that just seems like a dumb lifestyle so I left after about a year and a half. That and I never could get used to people calling soda, "pop". Not to mention, "pop" has replaced water as the most important liquid for consumption. Never seen people drink so much soda! I hate NY taxes, laws and libs and will someday again leave this state but it won't be for anywhere too far south where it gets hot and humid for 9 months of the year. Iowa has a farm just waiting for me to scoop up in a few years down the road.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  48. Here is my take. Notice that I live in Florida now. However, I have hunted in FL, GA, TX, KY, PA, MD and SC. I still make the 20 hour drive up to NY every fall to hunt. Why, because it's my "home". I was born and raised in Steuben County. I love to hunt there, and have done so since the 60's. Likely, I'll continue as long as I'm able. I've killed many deer (some fairly big and some dinks too). It doesn't really matter. It's a way of life... my life. I introduced my wife to hunting in the 80's. She loves it too, and always comes north with me. That's the way it is... and ought to be. Nuff said.

  49. After 2.5 it's a HUGE crap shoot unless, as posted by WNY bowhunter you have a history. The only real issue with that is that a buck can change drastically from year to year and keeping very accurate photo files isn't something most are going to do. Speculation is for gold miners......
