Nov 17, 2018. Upstate NY A Catskill Mountain deer season starts. Snow fell 24 hours earlier. Cloudy, windless, good snow, 28 degrees. In darkness, we hike uphill. With John settled, I head further uphill. At 2100 feet, I climb the ladder. Now wait. Season 48 now. How many do I have left? One can’t hunt if weak. I’m fit, but far from my prime. I focus on shedding weight, in equipment and myself. The mountains keep getting steeper. Keep exercising. Daylight, then legal time. It’s quiet. Nothing moves for two hours. A shot to the south stirs me. A kill? Half an hour later, a shot far east. Coyote? Not long after, a closer shot to the north, then another follows. A miss? I look for movement, Kimber Montana in hand, a 7mm-08 chambered. Movement. Binoculars identify a shooter! It’s running. I mouth a bleat to stop it. My scope finds the heart. I shoot once. Photos follow. It sports only my hit. I gut, drag and hang it. Nice 8 point. Good mass. Goes 160 dressed, maybe 200 alive. My biggest yet. I still have enough in me. God willing, next year I will too.10 points

there will be a handful of guys here that point to the safe act, but if we're honest those that were that angered by that law left a long time ago. It's the economy/taxes and the progressive push being so strong that it alienates a large population of this state. I think what really makes it bad is that he's unapologetic about it. He wants people that think like us gone and is on record saying it.7 points

Shot this doe with daughter sitting next to me. Happened fast abd she wasn’t going to get on them. 6 came through. 12-15. Shockwave did some damage. 142 pounds dressed.6 points

I figure you guys plan these as far away from me as possible but that's ok.....I'm just gonna hang with turkeyfeathers, Fletch and Crappyice and I don't have to pay for their beers !6 points

Was very fortunate to run into this guy the last Saturday of muzzleloader. Shot wasn't great as I had a tight window, and he was quartering away. It was good enough that he bedded down within 20 yards of the shot and gave me the opportunity to reload and put another one in him. He didn't have a liver left which is probably why he bedded down so fast. No idea what he scores (upper 140s/low 150s?), but he field dressed at 195 pounds. To say my wife is excited for a new wall decoration is an understatement6 points

I love how veterans have to wait at the back of the line in this country to get the healthcare they EARNED, but when an MS-13 gang member jumps our border and shows up in an ER they get fast tracked to the front of the line.5 points

I most definitely agree. My personal ranking of what makes me look to move out at retirement; 75% Property taxes 20% Liberal laws and policies 5% Gun laws Weather isn't a reason at all for me. I'll throw in a bonus 20% that Andy said he doesn't want me here anyways. No sense in living where I'm not wanted just because of how I think. Hey, that sounds discriminatory..4 points

He absolutely loves to rub it in everyone's face. My dislike for him goes far beyond guns. I just can't stand the attitude he has. Like he knows everything and everyone else is a total idiot. It drives me crazy that people are just fine with his arrogance and keep voting him in. Trump can be an arrogant cuss, too, but Cuomo honestly has him beat in how he talks down to the people he is supposed to represent. Trump generally will talk down to the media and other politicians, but in general he is not too harsh on the average guy on the street who doesn't deserve it.4 points

My interpretation: Stop gun violence: 1st step of many to finally remove guns from all NY. Jersey banned the bump stocks, not one turned in, in they NY banned assault rifles yet millions are not registered, shows the people will not bow to unjustified regulations that go against our second amendment! Dream Act: LMAO We have to many immigrants, once they cross the border it is known that in NY you are protected and will not get deported. I have no objections to immigration IF they come here legally! Stop making me pay to educate 1000's of illegal aliens and the health care they put such a burden on! Improve our democracy: Pay more so we can help people you never met and pay for there kids education and health care and anything else we think they might need, LIKE HOUSING! Protect LGBTQ rights: Just another ploy to get more votes. Plain and simple they now want to regulate and force you to allow gays and transgender and any other gender they can think of to be married in you church or any other religious location! Forcing all to comply or loose there none for profit status! Legalize pot: They finally figured a way to make more money off of drugs! So lets stop putting people in jail for it! After how many years they might actually understand the war on drugs has failed! Can't keep it out of schools, jails etc. So now that the drug war is over they are gearing up to take away your guns and your rights to them, step by step. Starts with lets ban, assault weapons, then 10 round mags, then bump stocks, then a longer wait period then...4 points

I've been on the sidelines all this year enjoying everyone's posts. I'm keeping the thread alive. I'm in my stand in Long island hunting. I hunted Catskills one week at the beginning of bow season then Columbus Day weekend. Then opening gun and anothe week before Thanksgiving. All and all my buddy got a button buck. I don't want to surrender. So I'll hunt Long island as long as I can.3 points

Still have a month of open season here in 1c. This season has been average or better than average in some respects from my perspective as a public land bowhunter. Highlights: Saw deer most sits (a bit better than my 50-50 avg.) Doe pee worked better this year than in past years. I rarely hunt from the ground, but had a decent buck encounter from a makeshift ground blind - that was a first. Got a small 7 pt 10/8, and it is tasty. I have a month left in the season. Lowlights: Hunted less due to rain and a wicked cold/cough that was tough to shake. The shot on the buck was a bit high and back (even though it was a quick kill and short recovery, I am thankful, but not happy). Drawing the bow when it is cold is getting difficult, so may have to lower the poundage....again. It sucks getting old. Enjoyed this forum and hope to post a bit more before my season ends. This was my fourth season overall and third with a bow. I'm still very much a newbie. So yeah I learned plenty: 1) treestands aren't that hard to put up by yourself if you only go 12 feet instead of 15 feet. And they still work well enough. And aren't as scary. But I still used a harness and safety rope for climbing up/down. (60+ yrs old is just too old to recover from a fall without some lasting damage.) 2) button bucks can look an awful much like a doe on the last day of archery at 4:30 PM. I will use binoculars to verify no buttons before shooting henceforth (they are tasty, though...). 3) I learned that if your first shot on a deer hits left by six inches, then your next shot probably will also, if you don't take time to re-check and adjust your bow sight. 4) A friend told me, and I tested and verified, that deer don't spook much at sounds ("the woods are full of sounds") as long as they don't see or smell you. 5) Grunting and rattling actually works. It helps if you have done enough sits to hear real doe bleats. I found I had to cup the end of the call in my hands and squeeze it tight to get that soft, muffled doe bleat that I have heard real deer make. Like humming with your mouth closed. 6) micro food plots work great.. for a week or so.. until they are totally eaten up. 7) lighted nocks (Lumenocks etc) aren't any help in tracking a deer if you shoot pass throughs. And they don't help recovering the arrows either, if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. 8) tracking a deer in fresh snow is really really easy! Even in the dark. 9) don't push a liver shot deer. Just don't. Even if gun season starts in the morning and the deer is heading toward a neighbor's stand and its getting dark and the coyotes will be out soon. Just.. wait. There's probably more but I have to go cook dinner..3 points

As far as a cashless society, I’m not much for that . Pretty much every guy I hire, from cleaning my gutters, to remodeling our kitchen ,to the guy who works on my kids cars , I pay cash . We save a ton . My car guy is off the books, and his labor rate is $50 an hour not $125 . Always need cash, bribes, hookers, blow , dont take CC .3 points

They're every where. I've ran into some in the city. Few years back me and a couple of the guys on this forum called on in at Stewart. My muzzleloader would have taken it but it came in on the side where one of the guys only had a shotgun and never came within range.2 points

My daughter is going to be 14 after Christmas but we had one when she was younger. We had the female Elf. Her name was Abigail. It was fun but don't forget to move it. The kids will notice for sure! You will need an excuse ready for when you forget....lol You also supposedly aren't aloud to touch them. Which isn't a problem unless the Elf falls out of the place you left it. According to my daughter it was acceptable to use tongs to move her.2 points

Well this was dinner last night. My intent was originally to make taco salad with some venison from last year's deer. Then after some debate with the girlfriend we decided it was more appropriately deemed just nachos with venison seeing as there was an extreme lack of salad for my taco salad. Was able to put some of the delicious mighty taco sauce on it too courtesy of The Man@Turkeyfeathers! Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk2 points

My wife and I decided we're outa here in 3 or 4yrs. We've had enough of this arrogant, pompous tyrant. This state is never going to get any better. I always tried to be optimistic that things will get better but I'm getting to the age where I can't afford to keep waiting . I decided to move to a state that had everything I wanted, so I just bought 75 acres of prime whitetail habitat in southern Ohio.Plan to retire down there in 3 or 4 yrs.2 points

Thx. You know what i didnt even notice the weight. I know its 7.5 lbs naked, probably 8lbs with scope and rings, but im not trekking the ADK's anytime soon...lol...the furthest i need to go is a 20 munute trek up my mountain , then i sit so not concerned about the weight. Wow 6 chambered in the 450, thats impressive. I was very close to getting a marlin 45-70, until i stumbled on the ruget #1 in 450, yes way cooler2 points

That is a classy piece of shootin iron!!! Looks like she’s probably pretty heavy! The bushy is becoming my favorite cartridge I now have 6 guns chambered in it, it does just about everything a 45/70 does with less recoil and in way cooler guns. I’m just waiting for the day a company makes one in a semi that’s not an AR, something like a bar in a carbine would be one hell of a deer rifle! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Combat Gun Violence: 2018 was by far the worst year for school shootings in American history. To once again lead the nation on gun safety, Governor Cuomo will push to pass the Red Flag Law, ban bump stocks and extend the waiting period for purchasing a gun from three days to 10 days Two problems with Governer Cuomo's plan: 1. Cuomo uses the term "gun safety" to trick the ignorant when all he does is really propose "gun control". 2. As always and again with Cuomo's "gun safety" plans, he never attacks the underlying causes of violent crime especially with firearms. Cuomo needs to ask the street police who see the root causes of gun violence . Cuomo would be enlightened to see that illegal drugs and failures to keep the violently mentally ill institutionalized are the major causes..2 points

Over all, not bad. It started early in September with a trip to Newfoundland moose hunting. All 3 of us bagged one, but I had a hell of a time getting around...plantar fasciitis (sic?) made my feet miserable....like walking on glass all day. I passed early on a small bull, but that meant all week to hobble around through awesome country, walking in horse shoe pitching distance of caribou, passed on a bodacious bear (I have enough at home) and on the last day shot a big fat cow. Back home, early on things were quiet, but we had early snow that stuck around from early November. After that deer sightings around the camp were frequent, taking a nice doe in early November and a darn nice buck the w/e of the 24th. The freezer is full, I was out as much as I wanted to, and never got bored. Good enough.2 points

No deer seen on my last hunt yesterday, but did end the year with a nice view during my paddle back. Fun watching the posts although I wonder how many deer walked by me while my eyes were not where they were supposed to be! Hope to meet some of you tomorrow at the Goat! happy holidays! Dino2 points

That brings back memories of my first antlered buck about 35 years ago. I had my Ithaca 37 16 ga and it was not loaded yet, near sunrise, when I heard crashing in the brush next to my stand. The buck stepped out, just as "legal" sunrise occurred. I jammed a slug into the bottom, hoping it got into the chamber, as I pushed the action forward (a side opening Remington 870 would have been better). Fortunately it did, allowing me to kill that 7-pointer. Shooting straight down has not happened for me since then.2 points
