  2. I braved the elements yesterday and got in on a 6-pack charter for cod off of Long Island. The weather wasn't bad for this time of the year, and the ocean was kind. I didn't get a limit but close to it. Cod is at the very top of my favorite fish to catch & eat, great start to the New Year!

  3. I was having trouble with one of my trail cams, so I cleaned it up and set it out in my yard here on Long Island to test it. I was expecting the usual doe or cat but holy crap!!! I still can’t believe it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. After Brady threw the pick 6, my wife was yelling "Yes! Yes!" at the top of her lungs. It was the loudest I heard her yell like that since . . . well never, actually. Her love for the Bills is outmatched only by her hatred of the Patriots.

  8. First day in the books . Eats like a horse... has a nose. Smelled breakfast sitting on the counter top , plops down in front and howls. Lmao. Cried at bedtime for 20 minutes. Woke me up at 3:30. Out peed. 430 howling back out 1 and 2. Slept until 6. Woke me up out again and starving boy wanted breakfast. Just settled in for a nap . Miss Ellie wants to play with him but she doesnt understand he is a baby. Ran him over a couple times .nocked him over while sniffing him over . Nock on wood no accidents in the house for day one. No accidents in the crate either.

  10. Well I got it all welded up and finished the mock up. Figured I’d snap a few photos. I need to pick up some hose clamps, and bungee cords to hold the ammo storage boxes down . I’m going to coat the radiator rack with truck bed liner. I installed external posts/ jump points for the battery to make it easier if I ever need to jump it or to just hook up the float charger for storage. Very happy how it turned out , wife’s will be next .

  11. Eagerly awaiting the start of the 2020 Maple Season. The maple bug grows each year from within. The sweet smell of maple steam is nearing. Getting ready for another great ride, LOL.

  12. He’s 22 years old and his first ever playoff game. He went to Wyoming college that never played in a big game. He played hard and made a couple of mistakes but i was happy the way he played, ya can’t hate the way he played or how he blamed the loss on himself. He’s a leader and will do great things in the future, give it time. What were you doing at 22 years old ?

  18. I'm in, with the bow. Made an impulse decision to get out in the woods instead of watching tv. Have low expectations of seeing deer, but it is too nice a day to just sit on the couch. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk

  19. Thank you for so many of you responding to this thread. Obviously there's a variety of opinions on this subject and a lot of that is situational which I quite understand. I sit and stand in my stand. They are always tucked into a tree with good cover but not enough to hinder a shot. Being in 9P means I get to see a lot of doe walk right under stand such that I could spit on them and without permit it's a nada. And even then I just don't shoot any doe when I do have a permit. No babies and no mamas with babies. But large single doe taste just fine. I guess the main reason for want to go lower is I started crossbow two years ago and very much enjoy it. I've mess my back up so bad that holding back a bow for any length of time is very painful. I had to give up bow few years back. Crossbow isn't an issue. Really sucks to get old but as long as I can crawl, I will hunt. My main concern is shot angle. I get the further they are away the less it matters. Even though I feel very accurate with X-bow out to 50 yards there isn't many places I can take that shot and if I could, I wouldn't. I've set a distance limit of 35 yards. This year I had a deer come in too close to shoot at first due to shot angle. I waited until he moved out further and even then I had to use my tenth grade geometry and biology and play the angle to get a decent lung shot. Glad I payed attention in those classes now but I never thought I would use it. If my stand was lower the angle would improve. Too low and you get busted. There's a trade off. As far as wood stands, if I know the age and how it was built I'm OK with that. But come on, how many wooden stands have you seen poorly built, that are ancient and are anchored into a growing tree. I'm not getting in that. Metal or wood I'm not trusting either much passed five years unless I carefully inspect and overhaul them with new bolts. I don't trust Chinese quality control. I was a rock climber at one point in my life. Not afraid of heights and I know how to anchor but I respect the situation. You fall rock climbing it always ends the same way. You smash into a wall of rock. It really hurts.

  20. I remember reading articles about deflection testing years ago..They set up grids of wooden dowels and shot through it at targets at varying ranges with many different projectiles, including shotgun slugs and heavy bullets in a 45/70.... The results as I remember it indicated that unless the target was VERY close to the grid, ALL of the projectiles deflected enough to cause a miss or a bad hit...There didn't seem to be any evidence that heavy, slow moving projectiles deflected any less or any more than lighter, faster projectiles... I'm not sure how scientific these tests were, but the moral of the story was that it is much better to find an opening in the brush than to try to plow through it, regardless of what you are shooting..

  22. I’m all ladders ,15-18 footers , some pretty big ones. Mine have seats that flip,up I can have my back right against the trunk if I wanted to . Most of mine are on telephone pole type trees just the way it is . The height difference between the entry and exit hole of my xbow buck this year was a couple inches , I don’t shoot a deer with bow or xbow more then 20 yards and are most under that . Heres my most hidden ladder , I killed two bucks out of it this year , could do that every year out of it , if I always sat there .

  29. We have had zero luck. I missed a fox this morning. We are very new at this and have zero idea what were doing. I've got a foxpro patriot. I start out with distress calls then eventually to coyote howls. I run each distress call 5 min each. The howls I let it go 1 or 2 howls then maybe 2 min break. Were at each set about 45-50 min. We've had 2 coyotes howl the past 2 nights but have not come in. Any help is needed lol I thought tonight would be good but it got very windy and rain/snow mix.

  32. Lot of confusion over the height of ladder stands comes from the mfger's spec'ed height. Some are to platform, while many are to the shooting rail. Wish they'd all get their $hit together and advertise height to the platform, only! Lot of different terrain, vegetation, sight of view and personal preferences regarding stand height. If you prefer sitting on a bucket or up ~25' & are successful - No one should criticize your choices!

  34. Lol.. . Not due to inexperience or skill...I find myself 20 -30 feet in the air often when hunting an open woods with little cover. If you are comfortable that high, your odds of being busted are much lower. I still would rather be 12' up in the middle of a cedar tree if I can find one..lol... In my early years of hunting I killed most of my deer from the ground(usually sitting on a pail) On the average I'm not fond of a stand in the 6-10' range. Unless you are covered up real well or dead still you are right in the deer's line of sight or peripheral vision and might be better off on the ground.

  36. I’ve been wearing Darn Tough socks for daily wear, year round for about 4-5 years now. They are guaranteed for life and today I exchanged four pairs with small holes in them for four new pairs. A couple days ago I found a great place: “Gear For Adventure” On Maple Rd (just east of Premier Liquor) that sells hiking/camping etc stuff. Being a Darn Tough dealer I inquired if they’d do my exchange. No sweat....bring ‘em in. So with all four pairs washed I swapped them out. Expensive socks but I love them and think they’re worth every penny even without the exchange. Gear For Adventure has had a store in Hamburg also for the past 13 years. The Amherst location has been open since May. Good people if you need some Good gear.

  37. Gosh I miss maple season. Had a Small Brothers 2x6 evaporator. Tapped 150 trees. My last yr surgering I did 62 gallons of syrup. My nephew helped me and those memories are precious. That was in 1996. In early Feb '97, Mark died in a farming accident. We were tapped and ready to go. In my grief, I sold everything. Couldn't imagine maple season without Mark. I regret that decision to this day. Grief causes one to do things one wouldn't normally do. In hindsight, I would have been honoring Mark. I followed the thread last yr, and look forward to this season's thread. Good luck everyone. Boil away...

  40. Plus it’s in an inside corner . I struggle to find trees with cover in the open woods , that’s my best hid one . I’m planning on moving another one soon, but the woods is wide open and getting it in bow range of the spot and not on a phone pole tree is proving difficult. I like to have cover it’s just seldom possible for me , fortunately in the rut bucks aren’t paying much attention.

  45. Including Sunday’s hunt I had 50 hours in a tree stand which compared to some isn’t much but with 2 young kids at home and a wife that works every other Saturday it was a lot for me. A buck came by at 4pm from the south working his way north up a logging road. I immediately knew he was a 4 pointer that I had on camera all year long. There was no doubt in my mind that at 4pm on my last day to bow hunt for the year that I was going to do my best to get this deer. He was walking at a good pace without stopping so I had to be careful standing up and moving into a shooting position. I was able to be ready for him as he passed 3 yards away from the stand. I didn’t like the idea of shooting directly down so I waited until he got out in front of me. At about 12 yards he got behind a small tree head facing away from me which is when I drew the bow back and made sure I had my anchor point and was looking through the peep site. He was now quartering slightly away As he continued to walk away from me. When he was at a tree that I knew was 19 yards I gave him a soft "meeep" to stop him and let the arrow fly! Impact spot looked great but it was not a pass through and it even looked like an absolutely impossible amount of arrow sticking out of him as he bounded away. All sorts of thoughts started to run through my head. Did I actually hit him in the shoulder? Is my bow not powerful enough? I’m drawing 62 pounds or at least I thought? All that passed through my head in the matter of seconds almost the same amount of time it took him to start to stumble. That first stumble he did was all the reassurance I needed to know that I did in fact make a good shot. I continued to watch him run away for a few more seconds when his front legs gave out and he nose dived into the ground flipping over himself. He tried to get up again but could only manage to spin around on the ground in a small loop kicking with his back legs as hard as he could. Within seconds all movement stopped and there he lay motionless 100 yards away from the shot. I had finally done it after 4 years of bow hunting, countless hours practicing in the yard, countless hours spent in the woods it was done I had finally taken my first deer with a bow. This is a hunt much like my first gun deer that I will never forget. The 5 minutes that transpired from first seeing him walking down the path to expiring 100 yards away is seared into my memory. I couldn't be happier about it. It’s my first archery kill and for it to happen on my last day, in the last hour is just amazing! Thanks for letting me share! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
