  2. Had a great day hunting. Dom and I had a nice 8 pt run by, then turn and follow the ridge 100 yrds out. He just couldn't find a opening he was comfortable with for a shot. Had a doe bed down 100 yrds out for a hr or so. This evening we hunted a field edge. Had 8 doe, fawn about 150 yrds out. Around 5:45 Dom spotted a deer 80yrds, behind the only tree in this field. It was a buck. After 20 minutes of this deer facing us, turning broadside, but behind limbs. Walking away, then turning around and coming back, Dom finally had a shot. Dropped in it tracks. Needed a second shot in the neck when we walked up to it as he spined it. Nice little 7 pt. Wow was he excited.

  4. 10/10 Went 1 for three today. I won’t bore you with the two non recoveries. I received a call from a youth hunter’s uncle this evening, telling me his nephew had shot an 8 pointer. Immediately after the shot, they were hit with a torrential downpour. The buck had run into the woods on the far side of the field and they didn’t know exactly where he entered. They did the right thing by backing out and calling me after not finding blood. I walked Luna along the edge of the field to see if she’d pick a trail and enter the woods. She chose one and in we went, but it was obvious she wasn’t locked on to anything, so we went back to the field. The second trail she picked was the correct one as we found blood pretty quickly. We ended up finding the buck, still alive, 235 yards from where he was shot. I quickly dispatched him and the celebration began. This 14 year old hunter was a whopping 3 and a half hours into his hunting career when he shot this bruiser. I’ll be curious to hear the weight.....easily 200 plus. Congratulations John!

  5. We only lasted an hour in the stand this morning. My daughter got cold right away even though I had her tucked into a sleeping bag. The youth hunter on our property shot a nice respectable 5 pointer. The kid is absolutely slaying it this year. Two deer with the bow. A buck and a doe now this 5 pointer with the gun on the youth weekend. There’s always next weekend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  7. Seen that 8 i got on cam with squiggle brow from 645-7 at 60 yds. Tried a soft grunt as he walked away but no luck. Then at 725am I saw First 10pt I ever seen. Perfectly symmetrical dark rack. Huge! Maybe 130” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  8. This afternoon it was Tyler who connected. We were walking in, and when we got to the field, I spotted a 4pt feeding. Tyler had to sneak a few yrds to clear the hedge row, and used the bipod on his .270 to get a solid rest. 105 yrds. Deer went 10' and dropped. 122lb 4 pt. Couldn't smack that smile from his face. Tomorrow both Tyler and Dom get a lesson on processing deer.

  9. Of all of the bucks that I have had on cam this year...this young stud ranks up there as one of my favorites. I only captured him twice over the summer as I believe he was focusing on some beans down the road always. Anyways, I was pleasantly surprised to finally get a few good pics of him and have my fingers crossed that he can survive for another year or two. He's definitely one of the best looking 3.5 yr olds that I've had on this farm in the 12 years that I've been running cams here. Last year at 2.5. I have both sheds...

  15. 10/11: Hunted 3S private spot again this morning till 9am and had one of my greatest NY hunts without even firing an arrow. Got into my spot at 616am. At 645am I saw a deer standing like a statue. Finally by 655-ish I could see it was the 8pt I had pics of with the squiggle brow tune. He was 65ish yards away, but i had the right wind. Unfortunately, he walked left to right and away from me around 7am. After I couldn’t see him anymore I tried a soft grunt and a few more at 715, but no luck. But then at 725 I look to my right where I’ve never seen a deer come from before and I see a rack. I knew it couldn’t be the 8pt and sure enough it wasn’t. It was a clean symmetrical 10pt. First 10pt I ever seen hunting in NY in my life. He was wider than the 8pt, straight brows, extra G4’s and overall just bigger in every aspect. Darker rack too. He did a big circle between 55 and 75 yards before going back where he came from. I really think I may have grunted him in when trying for the 8pt. Then at 735am i had a doe and fawn come in under 30 yds and head towards where the 8pt when. 740am 1 more lone doe came through same route as the prior doe and fawn under 30yds. So 5 deer seen and the two bigger NY bucks I’ve ever seen while in NY. I checked my scrape cam and the 8pt was on it this morning 2+ hours before I saw him roughly 50yds from The cam. Next 2 days look like rain so I’ll wait till Wednesday or Thursday if good wind and try again. I feel like I got a chance at this 8pt. But now the 10pt is a huge wildcard. What a morning! 16. 10/11 Kunox took two tracks this morning. #1 This was a buck shot with a bow at 7:30 this morning. The hunter watched it run off after the shot, but backed out after not finding any blood and called me. At the hit site, Kunox showed me a little spray of blood, but then nothing for the three hundreds yards to where the buck had died in the woods. The shot had been slightly high and hit one lung and center punched the liver. #2 This track was for a youth hunter that had shot what he believes was a 4 pointer, maybe a 6. The buck had run into the woods and was quickly out of sight. The young man’s father had made one loop about 75 yards into the woods, but backed out when he didn’t see any blood. Although we didn’t have a recovery, Kunox absolutely nailed the track. There was one point where we had gone 500 yards without blood and I have to admit to starting to wonder if he was still on it, when we found a drop. We ended up going 1400 yards with the deer looping back toward where it was shot. Despite not being pushed, this buck never bedded. I believe he’s still alive.

  20. Had a great morning at the lake property. Left there around 11 and went the 7 miles over to the farm. Had a bite to eat and went to check stands and trails for wind damage. Had to cut some trees that fell over a couple wheeler trails. Came back, shot our bows, and sat from 3:30 to dark. No deer seen, until I got up the road a quarter mile, after leaving, and almost had a big doe on my truck grill! Got real warm here today. Cooler tomorrow though. Will get after em again tomorrow. And mid day, will test out my new 270 recipe for both our rifles at the shale bank. First day under my belt. A little tired, but grinning like the Cheshire Cat!!!

  25. I prefer to have the wind in my face when possible. I choose stands for the predominant NW wind where I hunt. But the best spots will have set ups for more than one wind direction. I will hunt a crosswind too. But only if down wind is not where I expect deer to come from. There is "nothing" you can do, or buy, to make yourself scent free from a deer's nose!! Trust me!! The best advantage a hunter can use, is to always play the wind to "your" advantage.

  27. October 4th Track #1 Luna and I tracked a doe for 1.1 miles this morning, with no recovery. The hunter was sitting on the ground next to a sapling, and said she had seen him before he shot. The 30 yard shot her high, as she was on high alert and most likely jumped the string. #2 I was called last night by a hunter that had shot a nice buck. He waited 2 hours before taking up the track, and just under 200 yards realized he had gutshot it. He called me and I told him to back out and wait for me to come in the morning, which thankfully he did. Luna quickly took us to last blood and we continued on, flagging blood as we saw it. 170 yards later and the hunter yells “there he is” and the celebration began. We ended up with at least a dozen people out in the woods after he made a call. They had all been out duck hunting and were waiting to see if we’d find it. It was the perfect time for my “back out and don’t push a gutshot deer” speech, which these guys already knew, but I can’t help myself.

  38. Today, October 10th was our range day. We had a rifle range and then mentees or mentors could check out vertical bows and crossbows at an archery range we also setup. Almost all mentees had various shoot n see type paper targets and some reactive steel gongs at 50 yard increments out to 200 yards. Then for mentors we had targets out to a 500 yard steel gong. We again had our plywood proficiency deer. Its blanked off with matching color and shot up cardboard so you cant spot and correct your shots. In the back is a white paper with vitals outlined you pull off to see how well you did. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  41. I am betting no one else is having this Tonite. Lol Wild rice and gizzards. Something my Dad would make on occasion at hunting camp and everyone loved it. Sometimes with rice or make a pan gravy over biscuits. Cook them slow with onions for a couple hours then pan fry in butter and worchishire. I usually have this once a year just cause.

  42. 10/2 Track #1 HEAVY rain throughout this track. Hunter shot a doe last night, believing he hit her high. The arrow was never recovered. We tracked past where he had marked blood last night, but of course it had been washed away. Luna ended up tracking the doe .84 miles until we had a property line issue and had to call it. It appeared she had never bedded. We jumped a deer near the property line, but don’t know if it was her or not. #2 A 68 year old hunter shot his first bow buck last night. We were on the way back from the first track which had been 65 miles away, so rather than drive home to swap dogs, I saved the time and miles and Luna got the call. . She didn’t seem to mind. The hunter and his son tracked this buck for a couple hundred yards last night, wisely backing out without grid searching when blood became hard to find. Luna never wavered on this track. She took us .46 miles in a big circle, to a beautiful, big 8 pointer. He had come right back to within 75 yards of the stand he was shot out of. The buck had been gutshot, and luckily hadn’t been pushed into the next county. The hunter could not praise Luna enough, saying he was going to buy her a big juicy steak. #3 This track was only 4 miles from the second, so Luna lucked out with three in a row. The hunter shot this 8 pointer last night, and knew immediately he had made a poor shot. The arrow struck the shoulder, only penetrating a few inches. He and a buddy waited a couple hours and then tracked approximately 400 yards, marking blood as they went. He and his father went back this morning and advanced the track a short distance. Luna made short work of the 400 yards, but despite repeated restarts, circles, etc. we did not advance it. Based on the shot description, this buck is most likely still around. #4 Darn it, another high shoulder shot. This one was at 0700 this morning. The 8 pointer fell down when shot, then jumped up and ran away. The buck ran toward the nearby neighboring property line, so the hunter followed the sparse blood trail only 50 yards before backing out. The neighbor joined us on the track. As suspected, Kunox took us to the neighboring property. We went 3/4 of a mile seeing very little blood along the way. At this point, Kunox went hot, indicating a live deer which we never saw. I found a bed, but there was no blood in it. Kunox was pulling hard, and 50 yards away we found one drop of blood. Based on the shot description, distance traveled, and so little blood loss, the track was called.

  45. I start by setting stands up based on wind direction if possible. But it doesn't need to be in your face but the wind needs to be sending ypur scent the best possible way that you won't get busted. And away from the "kill zone" or area you think deer are coming from. If there is a trail or bedding area or area you think is most likely for deer to come out for you to get an available shot then you want to be sure the wind isn't blowing your scent into it. I actually have a stand where the wind against my back is ok because I expect deer to come out to my hard left. A good app to use is huntstand. Download the weather for the day and it will show a scent cone where your scent is most likely to be going.
