Do you shoot 100 grain or 125 grain broadheads and why?

Do you shoot 100 grain or 125 grain broad heads and why? I'm curious, I asked a friend and he shoot 100 because he noticed his arrows have a better flight for the 40 - 50 yard ranges.

75gr for me, but I shoot a heavier arrow so it works well for me.

I'm setup with 100 as well, its just what I had always used.

I shoot 100 for no particular reason, just always have. If I ever go after bigger game than Whitetails or Black bear, I may go with 125s for some extra weight and in turn, KE, though I probably wouldnt even need any more than I already have (@67ft/lbs)

I shoot 100 grain broadheads with an arrow weight of 430 gr total . It works for me so I leave it at that .

100gr seems to be part of the correct working combination of elements. Also if I ever wanted to try a different head there's plenty of options.

I shoot 100 gr because thats what was recommended when i started and i feel the extra ft lbs of the 125 arent needed for deer

125.. they pack a whallop at 20 yards... and fly great from my bow.. but thats a recurve with cedar shaft arrows... not a compound

125s because I'm in the heavier is better camp. I use a .450 Marlin in rifle for the same reason.

180 gr Silverflames - cause they tune the best to my set-up.

I also use 125 with a hybrid recurve/long bow. I was having problems with flight untill I switched to 125 grn broadheads. My arrows right now are 538 grns. full weight.

100 gr. Its about 90% of the industry,.... so go with the flow.

75 grain muzzy's have always flown like a bullet for me. I did go to some low profile 100 grain rocky mountains for a few yrs because the local dicks had them on sale for 15 bucks for a 6 pack but I ran out and they raised the price on them so I went back to 75 grain muzzys.

It really suprises me the anwers to this question. I shoot 100 grains for one reason to get the proper FOC I need to shoot a 100 grain. 125 and my FOC is to far forward and it will cause the arrow to drop faster in flight. Arrows need tuning just like a bow. Im also against the lighter the better theory. What does more damage and gets more penetration? Look at it this way Drive a volkswagon beetle into a concrete wall at 60 miles an hour, then go drive a big ass heavy truck into the same wall at 50 mph. Which one will cause more damage?

125 grain simply because that's what flies well out of my bow and also being an advocate of close shots in bowhunting, I never had a need to experiment with the super-light heads.

I shoot 100gr.Because thats what the person gave me when he set up my bow at the pro shop.I never thought about it.

85gr....same thing here. When I was set up at the shop that is what he reccomended. before that it was Thunderhead 100's or 110's ( i forget, but it was one of those).....but i must say that i have never had a probelm with my setup. All shots have been pass throughs ( expect for that frekin time i hit a branch on a 10 pointer) with Spitfire broadheads.

I shoot a 145 gr Broadhead. As a Longbow hunter with only 175 FPS (which is average for traditional bows), I rely on kinetic energy and momentum of weight for penetration rather than speed like the modern compound bows. My total arrow came in at about a little over 600 grains. And yes, I get complete passthru's on whitetails. l

My question to all those compound bow users that subscribe to the heavier or more penetration philosophy:

If you get a pass through with 85gr broadheads, minimal diameter arrows, 50# draw wgt @ 250fps, why go larger/heavier?

You can't get more penetration than a pass through, can you?

Suppose if (on a whitetail) you hit a front (or rear?) leg, penetration would be a mote point...?

IMHO - It's more about the angle of the target and shot placement than the projectile or energy.

If I were to hunt bear, elk or moose I'd have to re-think my broadhead & arrow setup.

With that said; The parameters I'm talking about are compound bow hunting from a stand/bilnd, basic broadside/standing deer and the typical +/-20yd shots.

Yes now slide the parameters out a bit farther and the heavier arrow wins. Plus myself, I shoot 70# at a 29inch draw so a little heavier is the better all around performer. Also, I came from shooting aluminum and some guys still do, they run heavier than even the heaviest carbon aroow on the market.

That's kinda why I put the "Parameters" disclaimer in.

Know a lot of hunters shot 40yds+, which I choose not to and can't address the specifics of wgt/penetration for those who do.

Lotta hunters shot heavier draw weight, which give flatter arrow trajectory and different velocity/energy characteristics.

Then there are the primitive longbow die-hards, which I don't pretent to know anything about.

Many hunters use 10+ year old, slower bows and some have newer 350fps bows.

Many different arrow/broadhead combinations that could work for any of these groups, but no "one size fits all" (as you noted).

When I choose my broadhead/arrow combo, I did a lot of research on the web & hunting magazines.

Even the so called experts don't agree on velocity, penetration & kinetic energy debate.

What I was imlying was that there seems to be a general logic amoung bow hunters to think large draw wgt, heavier arrow & big broadheads are better.

Is it a male ego thing, is bigger really needed and that much better?

It's kind of a personal preference & what works for you bow setup or hunting senerio.

Ahhhh gotcha, In my opinion its better to have an arrow go only halfway through and stay in so that the BH works as a blender inside as the deer runs off there by resulting in a faster kill. I shoot 70# cause I like it, plain and simple..haha
