The ever requested electronic aid deer hunting thread

There was some discussion on live from the woods thread about ,electronic aids and communication of deer movements . So I started this thread . Back in the day I recall , it was illegal to,use hand helds ie walkie talkies to broadcast deer movements , it used to be in the booklet one got with their license. I haven’t seen that in years probably due to everyone using phones and text ,I feel they gave up .

Anyone remember  that ? 
 

Today guys get live updates from cell cameras and  text messages and adjust their hunting accordingly, something that doesn’t fit into my style of hunting , but to each his own . Is texting your buddy about what’s heading his way ,just a helpful tip or should he rely on his keeping still and eyes open and relying on his skill to get a kill ? Cell pics sent to your phone , alerting you ,  just using current technology or and unfair advantage ? Argue away .

I do remember that. So myself I have zero problems with one texting another that a deer is heading their way. I’ve been texted that , to never see said deer.

Last year my buddy shot a real nice 8 opening morning of gun around 7:30am ....well after a few hours he got ants in his pants and decided to take a walk. We put him in that shack/blind for that very reason. We knew he would wanna walk around after a few hours of sitting and if we left him across the creek in the front half of the property so he wouldnt ruin anyone's hunt if he starting poking around early. Well low and behold he shoots me a text and says keep alert.....I kicked up a buck and I think he is headed your way. So now I'm on high alert with lazer focus and don't see a thing for 15-20 minutes. Thinking the deer skirted my setup I look to my left and that Buck is frozen 5o yards away deciding his next move. I settled the cross hairs right behind his shoulder and the next move he made was straight to the ground. Made for a fun story and a nice team effort!

I believe i read somewhere if you use a wire less camera to move your hunting position to harvest a buck and its big enough to make p&y it won't be accepted anymore.  Pretty much can't get a picture and go oh shit and get to the next tree stand its heading to.  Like I said I heard this is p&y new rule. 

Me personally I don't really care either way still have to make the shot when or if the deer gives a chance.

I remember when it was in the hunters handbook you got when purchasing your license. That no electronic communications on deer movement was allowed. That went away around the year 2000? Now days, that would be totally impossible to enforce anyways.

To be honest, I have text my buddy to give him a heads up on deer I saw moving his way. And him me. Though I don't think a deer was ever killed because of just that. It likely would have been killed anyways. Just like we did for decades before cell phones came along.

I also have a couple cell cams that I picked up this year. None of the cell cams are near a hunting set up. Just travel corridors. I like them because I don't have to go in the area to pull the cards. I didn't get them to hunt for me. If the situation ever came up, where I was hunting on one spot. And got a picture of a huge buck in another area from my phone. Would I move?

Again, to be completely honest.........maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't. I never have had that happen. And a part of me hopes it doesn't.

And I don't care at all what other hunters do, as long as it's legal. As far as I know, there is no law saying it is illegal.

More an ethical question in my opinion. Some will be for it. Some against.

While we’re at it let’s talk about planting food plots to keep deer on your dirt longer. Or put together deer drives to push deer to stationary hunters. 
point is I use every advantage I can as long as it’s legal.

... or when you're checking your phone & reading a "heads-up alert" message, isn't the buck standing in the brush staring up at you fumbling with your phone!??! Happened to me a few years ago. Checked a text from a fellow hunter "seen anything?" and as I'm reading the text I look over and there's a nice mature BB walking ~12yrds from behind my stand. Needless to say, by the time I put phone away and got bow ready, he'd walked into the brush. He did make one fatal error by looping back around the other side of my stand a several minutes later.

Hunting is evolving. It has evolved since Native americans used stone broadheads, has it not? And I'll bet they would argue that the stone was better than expandables. So here's the point, unless your making your own bow, arrow and broadhead your one in the same as the guy who uses cell cams. As far as questioning ethics ( my own ) it's a pretty bold statement to say it's not fair chase and ethical. It's legal. Get over it.

I do remember the old regs. I think as long as it’s legal I don’t care what or how other hunters go about it. I think we all grow up and learn from our mentors and family on what is fair and ethical to each of us. As long as you each follow your own inner guide and don’t break the law I am happy for you if you are.

The object of hunting in the long run is to kill the game quickly. It is our own compass that decides how hard we want to make the game. But in the end it’s a deer and we have a weapon. It was never a fair fight to start with!

I agree other than not a fair fight. Yes we have a weapon but deer have eyes, ears, a nose and some fast running legs. They also live in the woods, not in a house. If it was easy to kill deer everybody would get deer every hunt. There is no GUARANTEED deer to kill. Ever. I have chosen my style of hunting and thoroughly enjoy all aspects of it. Electronics have definitely helped my success in harvesting deer, but by no means is it ever easy.

Oh no this was definitely a case of Equipment having the false appearance of being superior to prior setup. In reality it was far inferior a head and I switched back to my old setup and will never use a crappy mechanical again. Probably not ever

I rmember hearing about it for other states, but ive texted friends of mine while we were hunting about deer movement. Its going to be impossible to enforce, but dont be surprised if the rule is still on the books

I have 3 cell cams now and it does help me know where I should be but just doesn't involve me going to checking them so often. It does help my success but it's certainly not cheating in my opinion. It's not like you get a picture then can go out and kill the deer. It's still hunting, it just tells you where the best odds are...

The biggest advantage that I’ve seen from cell cams are being able to see when deer are and aren’t moving in relation to moon, wind, and weather with zero human intrusion. In addition to my own cams, my friends also share their cell cams in areas that we don’t hunt. The knowledge gained about deer movement as a whole over a very large area is proving to be an invaluable asset for all of us.

Theres people who have to drive 2 hours or more to their hunting spots ,cell cams save time and money .

I’ve said many times ethics is decided between you and the person you see in the mirror.

A guy I know that does a lot of tracking in the ADK’s has killed bucks the last few years that he got a picture of on his phone from his cell camera. Gets a pic in the night, goes to cam, picks up track and kills said deer. Is it cheating? Nope. Is it a huge advantage? Yup. Is it something I would do? Nope.

For a stand hunter I don’t see where the big advantage is for help during a hunt. Not many people are going to get a pic and climb down and try to make a move on the deer.

True, but there will always be blow-hards that like to make public comments on the ethics others.  There is no helping those folks.
