  5. I enjoy using all of toys.. This year , as usual, I have carried my 7mm08 most of the time, and have shot 2 deer with her..She is just such a SWEET THANG to carry in the deer woods.. However, I also took my M1 Garand out a couple of days, and my 9.3 x 62 a couple of days, but got no shooting with either of them.. JUST TO BE FAIR, I think I'll hunt with my trusty old M 70 .280 rem for the rest of rifle season. I haven't shot a deer with it since my CO mule deer hunt last year.. I think I have heard her whining from the gun safe, wanting to go hunting... She just keeps saying " Take ME, Clarkie.... You KNOW you love me...." And I just happen to have a box of 140 grain TTSX reloads left over from my Colorado hunt last year...

  9. my dad filled his buck tag @ camp in 8P @ 8:30am, 12/5/15, only deer seen that morning.. the buck was cruising nose down, after letting many deer walk this year..he chose him to be tag worthy. he thought he was bigger than what he was when he shot, it happened so fast, he almost regretted shooting him, it took a few minutes and then dad became very happy with his decision .. he will be on the wall from the shoulder up! .. My dads age is starting to catch up with his abilities like he used to.. 1 proud son right here.

  10. I couldn't update from the stand yesterday because the cell service is hit or miss from that location. But I got my projects completed early enough to go for an afternoon sit, and got in to the stand at about 2:45. About 3:45, this guy shows up. I already filled my buck tag, so the only thing I was shooting him with was a video camera. He was following a doe, and after watching him for a few minutes, he slipped off through the woods with his girlfriend. I don't know if I would have taken him if I still had a tag, but after looking at the video, I may be tempted during the late season when I'm back in the game with a buck tag. I had a few more does filter in and punched the lone doe tag I had with a 10 yd neck shot about 30 minutes after the buck left. The freezer thanked me!

  11. But today I did...finished cleaning th 8pt 's head for a euro mount...just need to buy whitener....I skinned and quartered him yesterday and thought while doing so. I shot you out of Rivers blind..I mentioned in another post I named the new blind Rivers blind for our new grandson...Then I thought......I shot you the year River was born...hhmmmm Wouldn't it be nice to make a euro mount for his room when he's a bit older...I always wondered how hard it would be to skin a deer head,,,Dang the whole thing start to finish was easier than sawing those dang racks off IMO... Not sure I did it right but it's clean as a whistle...I think I may do one for each buck I take from that stand over the years until he's old enough to hunt it himself....Then I can teach him how to do his own...

  14. That is a LOT of powder for a gun only designed for black powder or black powder substitute. Blackhorn only recommends 84 grains by weight as a max charge, just be careful...

  16. I have only ever hunted with one muzzleloader, a TC Hawken .50 cal. that my ex-wife bought me for my birthday in 1973. I used it for years with the factory sights until my eyes got too old for them. I installed an aftermarket tang peep sight, which I still use today.. For years I shot PRBs with 90 grains of 2F blackpowder or pyrodex and a #11 cap. A few years back, as a result of an elk hunt, I switched to a Noexcuses 460 grain conical with 80 grains of 3F 777 and a CCI magnum #11 cap.. It works as well on deer as it did on elk and shoots plenty flat and accurate out to 100 yards, which is as far as I will shoot with it.. In fact I don't think I ever took a shot at game with it over 75 or 80 yards.

  18. Until intelligent people get elected and change it, just as they are trying to do with Obamacare. Or until another 2nd Amendment case gets to the SCOTUS and overturns all of these unconstitutional gun laws. With the help of ISIS in America, it won't be long before full automatic weapons are legal for responsible American citizens to own again.

  19. Obama is a flake. We all know how he got into office. Most people wanted him out after his first term, so how did he get elected for a second? This country isn't run by the people we vote for, but, by the companies that support who is elected. Obama has less then a year left and he will do what ever it takes to destroy this country! The gloves are off people, you need to take a side and stand by it! I still choose freedom!

  21. Here's the only common sense exhibited by the SCOTUS in this case: "Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia dissented, saying that lower courts have been ignoring Supreme Court precedents on Second Amendment rights." Not hearing a case does not mean the law is Constitutional.

  23. Not a pretty rack, but a mature buck none the less. From the spread at the antler bases I guess about 3 1/2 years old. Most challenging shot I ever made. 120 yds, 20yds inside the brush. Iron (peep) sights, facing almost straight on. All I could see was his chest, the top of his legs & the white spot on his nose. I had to study the sight picture for a few reference point on the tree that was next to him as when I looked through the aperture I had a hard time picking an aim point on the deer's chest. I hit him dead center through the windpipe just above the midpoint between his chin & brisket. 160gr Hornady FTX over 49.5grs of Rl-17. 2500 fps Mv At the shot there was dead silence & no movement where the deer was standing. After watching the spot for several minutes & got down from my tripod & walked to the edge of the brush before I could see him. From the way he was bunched up he must have pitched down nose 1st. The bullet never entered the chest cavity. It must have taken out the spine.I hope to find the bullet when we butcher him. If you look cloesly, about 1/2 way between the muzzle & the left edge you can see the gray roof of the tripod stand 120 yds disdtant. Here is a zoomed shot from where the deer was laying. I think he was standing a little to the left as that large tree on the edge of the brush was what I used as a sight reference.

  27. I make fajitas with them. I slice them up thin, like you would a green pepper, just make sure to trim the fat off of the outside, and basically cut the top of it off. You will also run into little stringy tendons that you will want to slice out. I then fry it in olive oil along with garlic, peppers and onions (start those first) and season with homemade fajita seasoning (google a recipe). I serve it up on tortillas with sour cream and hot sauce.

  30. I'm thinking less hunters = less shots = less incidences. Also I think hunters using rifles are less likely to spray and pray. But whatever the reason, hoping this will be the safest season on record. And also hoping the trend continues.

  37. Other than another drive or two in 8G, we're done with deer for the year. We've got our meat, & there's so few deer around camp (8N), that we closed deer season early down there. No DMP'S filled there (intentionally). Eat it DEC! Excited to be back to squirrels! Got this one there yesterday.

  38. It depends on its weight. If its over 1000lbs, its the same as a tractor. Orange triangle is all you need. If its under that, you are SOL at this point in our lovely state. Just search the DMV website for the info.

  39. I have not had a shot opportunity at an adult deer all season until Friday , Dec 4th.. Since then I have killed a buck and a big doe, plus could have shot another buck, if I hadn't already got one.. Go hunting...You may not see any deer, but if you stay home your mother-in-law might decide to come over and visit..

  46. I'm not especially squeamish, but I draw the line at eating testicles or brains...Unfortunately , they are very closely related in the male of the species..When one kicks IN the other kicks OUT... I have tried tongue and do not like the texture...I'll eat heart and liver all day... Reminds me of watching my Inuit guide, George Konana, dismembering a bull caribou I had shot...he was telling me and my buddy about what the Inuits used each part of the caribou for.. When he cut off the penis, I asked " GEORGE, what do the Inuits use THAT part for ? " His answer was...." Not much.."......

  48. I did this one that my buddy killed on opening day with a 3000 psi power washer. It took 40 minutes total, 10 minutes to skin with a sharp knife, then 30 minutes to blast out the eyballs, brains and other soft tissue. His kid did one for me a couple years ago using the conventional boil & scrape method. That took several days, and was a smelly job with a messy cleanup. There was no smell at all blasting off this fresh head with a power washer. I also used it to clean off a smaller buck scull plate during archery season and that only took 10 minutes. I wore goggles and rain bibs and did it on a concrete pad. Cleanup was easy: the birds and vermin had every bit of the mess gone by the following morning. I wrapped the lower part of the horns with duct tape to keep the natural antler color. My buddy was very happy with the job. It was the least I could do for about 75 pounds of boneless venison.
