  3. I pretty much pack my day pack with everything and take it everywhere. Knife, extra compass, gutting gloves, extra gloves, socks and clothes in cold weather, GPS, compass and calls on lanyard, flashlights and batteries, drag rope, soda, water, Gatorade, trail mix, fat sandwich, chips, range finder, extra release, bandanas, TP, first aid kit and fire starters, hot seat. Only other thing is my phone when hunting LI and radio when I am not solo up in the ADK. I even take the back pack into the tree when on LI as I usually get stuck in the dark and sometimes have to track a blood trail, usually not mine. At its lightest I am probably around a few pounds, LI early bow state land still hunting. Up in the ADK I tend to bring the extra's as it is NFA area. No Fooling Around because every year someone dies up in that area. Then the pack is probably close to its maximum as extra bullets, batteries, clothes and food fill the voids. If I did not stop and post the extra clothes would not be needed but find a great spot miles back and it is basically impossible for me to leave the area, that extra gear, flashlights and warm clothes keep me on post when most others are back at camp. I can't say staying in deep woods late has always worked but one year I found a track of all tracks after getting situated for a hike out in the dark. The next day I caught up to him! Now I get to look at him every day and remember the one day that everything worked out right! Big deal for me as many times something went wrong!

  9. I usually fill my pack with everything I could possibly need before season and leave it in there for the duration. At least then I know where everything is when and if I need it. I don't really mind carrying the extra weight on my back.. it's the stuff hanging around my neck I tend to leave behind some days. A camera or binocs don't do much good on the fly if you gotta strip down to dig them out.

  11. I always had the best luck off the mouths of the creeks (Keg & 18 mi at Olcott or 4 mi out of Wilson). Trolling bright orange jointed Rapalas in about 10 ft depths worked well. Look for warmer water off the creeks. We usually ended up with a mixture of browns, rainbows, and cohos. Sometimes, when the action was slower, we would run planer boards. Trout and salmon are way more fun on those than Walleyes, always fighting good after the release, not just dragging in like a log. Just long-line trolling in a zig-zag pattern, off the creeks, allows you to stay on the fish easier with a smaller boat turning radius than when you have boards out. Good luck, the weather looks good over the weekend. Hopefully you get a SW wind and not that darn North one that seems to come up whenever I get up on Lake O.

  14. I'm going out tomorrow afternoon to try and catch some Browns and or cohoes. I went with a guide a couple years ago, there really isn't much to it this time of year. Just dragging stickbaits in shallow water. Having said that I welcome any and all tips!

  18. First do not shoot i. Strut, oe too close to blow head apart, do not run and jump on bird or allow it to flop areund the woods losing feathers, if it does pick ip.all the feathers you. Can and sandwich between cardboard. Cardboard to put around tail top and bottom, to keep feathers from bending or breaking, wrap in. Newspapers, not plastic. Get to taxidermist fast, most will skin and give you the breast meat in my experiance. If bird is wet pat dry before wrapping, a cooler is good to have with cold packs in ot if traveling a distance.. Best advice is call taxidermist you plan on using to see what he recommends

  20. The hunting shows are a lot like the woodworking shows or the home improvement shows: They make the end result look easy, without showing the prep, the setup, and the knowledge required to get there. They glamorize the end product in order to lure people in, and they're sponsored by people who want to sell stuff. It's just marketing and business, and an extension of the 'infotainment' industry. BTW, the Popeil Pocket Fisherman actually works.

  23. i bring a full backpack, mostly full of clothes to layer because i sweat like a donkey. walk down in a tshirt or base layer then add more layers when I'm at my stand. during early bow season i bring a much smaller pack with just the basics

  24. Depending on the time of the year I usually have 3 or so layers on, I wear a camo backpack for my grunt calls, tp, doe bleats things like that. Its not much really. Early in the season the only thing I take is a knife, tags, doe bleat and grunt call.Obviously I carry my bow or rifle with me always at the ready.

  25. No quick answer: depends on the weather, type of hunting (back woods, still hunting, tree stand 100 foot from the road, experience, etc.) usually dress in layers, lighter when moving, with a fleece/ cover to put on when I stop. If you leave the toys behind (gps, tablet, keep it to one thought out knife, a few extra rounds of ammo, etc. you can travel pretty light. Where my main hunting is done, I can walk back to the camp for rope/ tarp, bulkier items if I need them, as opposed to clumsily carrying them. Learn how to use the essentials, and quite quickly you leave the rest behind.

  38. I have been out twice this week to try casting from the Olcott pier and the mud line has been heavy. It was a few hundred yards out with a strong breeze from the northeast to boot. Get on the clear side of that mud line and you might see the rods bending. Good luck!

  47. No need for a fee, i do have a donate button deal but its not necessary providing members don't run adblockers. We have just a few ads, they are generic from google but relevant to the content. I hate sites that have a crap ton of ads, which is why I chose the spots to have them. It would be nice if those members white-listed the site there are a few folks that block the ads. Perhaps I'll have to block the ad-blocker members. We don't ask much (actually nothing) here so the least you can do is not block the ads. I'd never charge a fee to access the site, that would cut us off from the internet essentially. Whatever money I do get from ad's is really turned right back into the site for the hosting fee's and licensing costs for the forum software/updates.
