  2. Picked up the new king of the basement over the weekend. I'm very happy with how he turned out. I might need to move him as he makes my 8 point look smaller than he really is. Going to be few more months before my once in a lifetime buck comes home. Good things come to those that wait. I hope? I really need to shoot a bear to pull the room together

  5. Your eyes did not deceive you, yes there are Red Fox that can be colored black, they are a color mutation called Silver Fox, their color is mostly black with a small amount of white on the tips of their fur. I actually had one for a pet many years ago, I kept her around to train my Coon dogs not to be chasing fox when I was hunting them. Al

  8. I had to run out tonight around 7pm tonight and had the VCR (see who catches THAT!) record it. It was a spring turkey hunting show, not surprisingly. But what was surprising was that none of the gobblers were shot from inside a blind. Pretty damn rare these days on TV............ The film and audio were spectacular, it really put me in the mood and that's something I'm lacking lately. Episode #147 on the Outdoor Channel circa 02-05-19

  12. State Ed is trying to get the entire state to take the State tests on the computers by next year and my district “volunteered” to start this year. Yesterday was day one and the system BLEW UP! My kids were supposed to take it today and tomorrow but state called and said we couldn’t. Another black eye for NY state Ed and another reason why parents have every right to pull their kids from the experience. Since my plans changed today, maybe I’ll have my kids sling some arrows at an Academy! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  23. Absolutely nothing. Everyones trophy is different I've personally shot 1 jake in my life. About 3 years ago fall hunting. I called as I was making my way out of the woods and about a dozen heads pop up . I shot the first red head I saw. Funny part was I had just taken a call from my brother who's property I was hunting and he was out west. There I am talking on my phone, hang up, call and 25 yards from where I was talking all these heads pop up. I shoot and text brother. He's like what?! I was just talking to you 30 seconds ago. Another fun jake story. Couple years back I had 2 longbeards hammering all morning. They hung up at 100 yards or so. Descended down the big hill. They'd gobble occasionally and shut down for a few hours. After a bit I hear crappy gobbles and then see 9 jakes and 1 hen coming in through a field almost on top of me. I could have shot any one of those 9 . all of a sudden they boot scoot boogey and gobble at the same time I then see the 2 LB's again and the jakes were going to go kick their butts. A hen comes running up the hill and almost across my feet. the 2 Toms were nervous but went into 3/4 strut as the jakes got closer. I putted once and once LB came out of his partial strut and I tipped him over at about 30 yards. When I shot all the jakes gobbled and took off running. Had I shot one of those jakes one of my best to date toms wouldn't have gone home with me that day.

  24. I almost think it is becoming two different things A sport for some folks to go after the challenge of a big rack or for a few a 200 pounder, some for the glory and some for there own self measuring. And it is kind of a competition to these folks. And for others its not a sport but a way of life. More about the experience and the sustenance. If I could not eat it I pretty much would not hunt. I am not really into catch and release either. I fish for fish I like to eat and are fun to catch. I do not like my hunting to be referred to as a sport. I am not competing against anyone or recording a score like golf or bowling. I am not saying either is wrong. I don't understand the first as much because I am the second. But I am not against it except for the fact that the general public are pretty favorable for sustenance hunting not trophy hunting.

  26. it's ridiculous how twisted together two very different things that are "trophy management" and "quality deer management" have gotten. i honestly hate discussions like this, for that reason. meanwhile, efforts educating people on QDM or just whats good for deer and hunting gets bastardized because someone is associating it with something else, making assumptions, and drawing false conclusions. then everyone everyone's throws they're hands up and says just shoot what you want and be happy. not exactly a good solution when it comes to sustainability for a thriving deer population. i truely believe there's absolutely nothing wrong with shooting a small, young, or yearling buck. i don't care really what you shoot and what you shoot it with. if it's legal, it's playing fair with others and nothing gets out of hand. i won't trash anyone's yearling or young buck and certainly not a subjectively small antlered buck. matter of fact, if a new or young hunter gets a opportunity to take one i'd encourage it. same goes with a hunter that hasn't taken a buck in a long time. lines are a little blurred though when considering what should happen. hunters should know that there has to be a sufficient buck population to have a sustainable and thriving deer herd with hunting to match. that means that seasoned hunters should be making an honest effort to pass yearling bucks. if they don't, they have no reason to complain about ANYTHING having to do with how poor the deer numbers, rutting activity, or opportunity is in their area. i won't trash the buck they took but if they b**ch to me about the situation, they're getting constructive responses back. despite respectful and excepting of their deer, they still usually don't like the feedback. lines are more blurred when not considering areas within NY sustain vastly different populations from either other. out this way, even in managed habitat, we could take 13 doe per square mile as some areas routinely do and we'd have nothing for deer left. similar situation for bucks. just a couple yearling bucks taken in some areas has much more of an effect on hunter observation and opportunity than it would for other areas. when having these conversations it's important to be able to separate what's basic good practice, what's simply competitive with no ill intent, and what's being a dick with higher standards going above and beyond what's not to be expected of others. i look at hunting as a tradition and necessary act for conservation. i don't look at it as a sport, despite it can be rather sporting and certainly requires skill. If times where truly hard, like apocalyptic movie hard, hunting might be considered as a right. here in NY right now i don't considered it a right and definitely a privilege.

  28. you make an excellent point. Society strives after measuring success. I doubt there's a member on this board with a job who isn't measured against some set of standards. Hell even our spouses do it to us lol. So it's natural that hunters started scoring racks and talking more about age and difficulty. It's a "sport" so there has to be a measurement on who is the MJ of hunting. And as most of us agree, that is impossible to do for hunting and what makes it so great. We started to lose our way with this and I think it's coming back around a little with the farm to table movement.

  29. I have seen one many years ago on our hunting property. All black except for a white tip on it's tail. Very much like the one airdale posted. Which is very cool. The only other black, redd foxx I recall was on Sanford And Son, again, many years ago! He was pretty cool too!

  30. We're going to check out the Clarksville, VA area. Either side of the border of NC. Not looking to live on the water, but within 20-30 minutes of it. Ideally with about 20-30 acres that a soon to be old dude can hunt on. Who am I kidding, I'm already an old dude! Real estate taxes are 1/12th of what they are here in New Yorkistan.

  32. With all respect to those that do, I just don't get the expectations or standards applied to deer hunting. If you have these, are they carried from opening day thru the last day of the season? Possibly just my old fart thought process, but simply getting out hunting, enjoying nature, hopefully seeing deer and having an exciting encounter with (any) buck being a plus! I go into every hunting season with no expectations, goals or anything to prove to myself or others!!! This is part of my (lack of better word>) hunting ethics and I'd never attempt to impose this on another hunter. Hunt how you want, shoot what makes you happy and use whatever weapon you prefer. Makes NO difference to me even if you hunt with me or on an adjacent property.

  39. I started off going after larger deer and boy was that a futile adventure. I still enjoy going after them and still pass young deer but sometimes you have to take what is given and enjoy the adventure. Last year was one of my more memorable hunting trips. The excitement on the 2nd year hunters face, eating venison in deer camp of the deer we just dragged out a few hours earlier was amazing.

  40. aaron warbitton started as in intern on Midwest Whitetail. Always could kill turkeys like nothing. they started doing more and more online segments hunting public land in the midwest (still stupidly great hunting areas). at first i thought it was a sub show under midwest whitetail but i guess some of them left and are now doing their own thing.

I haven't seen any from a blind yet. (although i just started watching) I do agree it's great to sit in my living room watching spring turkey hunts, can't wait for 5-1!

  44. there is soooo much wrong with this video. he provides zero facts to back up the fear mongering. This has happened in NONE of the other states including CALIFORNIA, there is no approval for weed in the budget and furthermore nothing about a database. You know what there is a database for? Medical weed. You know who is on that list and owns a gun and has lost their guns? Nobody. On top of that, providing proof of age is the same thing you do with cigs and beer. Finally, he makes a blatant fear statement that you will lose your guns because it's a controlled substance. How? Why? What proof? tobacco and alcohol are controlled and here I am with my guns. just stop.
