  2. Was going to go for one last chance at deer but this guy wanted to tag along for his first hunt for I switch up to squirrels. His constant chatter scared everything away but I take it as an investment. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. I actually made a new ice fishing friend on a new lake today. I was the only one out there about 3:00. I used a lake map to get near a drop off to try and find some crappies moving up for an evening bite. For the first half hour all I was getting was a bunch of 7-8 inch, skinny perch. About that time i hear someone coming through the crunchy snow, and he comes right at me. Instead of walking right on by when I greeted him, he stopped and bullshitted for a couple minutes, telling me he is after crappies too, and there is another shelf that he found about 20 feet from me. I asked if he was going to fish it and he said he didn't want to crowd me out. I told him to drill and fish away, and if he got on the crappies, i would come over and crowd him. Well, he gets a crappie right off the bat and tells me to get over there and grab a different hole. I proceed to start reeling them in almost as fast as I can get the bait down, while he has a full screen and hardly any bites. We compare baits, and it's easy to see that my setup is a lot smaller than his, but he doesn't have any jigs and plastic comparable. I dig in my jig box and give him a couple 3 mm jigs like I am using, and some spikes. He is instantly reeling them in right with me. It was an awesome hour and a half until we just flat ran out of light. As it was, we were using out fish finders to see our poles at the end. He kept 6 crappies about a foot long, and I kept none, and he was happy about that. I said i had a christmas dinner later, and didn't want to bother with the fish cleaning when i could be back there tomorrow. This is a perfect example why I like to hunt and fish socially so I have somebody else working with me instead of against me. Probably going to end up being one of my top days of fishing this winter.

  4. Bought a couple Christmas toys for my lab Ellie.3 toys 53 minutes . Destroyed . I bought most toys indestructible on the market. She destroyed them . Yesterday I went to the garage. Took out the box of old antlers I have collected. Cut the points off a scrub buck and ground edges. she is a happy pup.... nothing worse than having to take new toys away from your pup. I know they have been selling them for years but the wife didn't like the idea . Our vet approved antlers but wife dragged her feet. Wife said I better shoot a buck next year... I told her I have it covered. Theres 2 totes full in the garage.

  10. My first deer was a 20" wide 9 pointer. He had obviously caught his ear between his and another deer's antlers, and had a split down the length of his ear. Fortunately the taxidermist I used was able to save the "split" so it made for a cool mount. Ever since then I've used the "Splitear" handle on forums. Leland is my name, so, there you go

  15. Hi Everyone! I'm semi-new to New York State, and am from Ballston Spa (near Saratoga Springs). My wife and I moved up here in 2014 from Southern Illinois, and I haven't hunted at all since we moved to New York. I've got the bug again, and am excited to start hunting again in 2020. Obviously it's quite a shift from what I'm used to in Illinois, but I'm looking forward to learning not only strategies for hunting in NYS, but also about the NYS hunting regulations. I am a 4-H Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension, and am a 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor in the Shotgun and Rifle disciplines (and am getting Muzzleloader certified in February). I have a lot of 4-H Volunteers that I work with in our Shooting Sports program who will be a lot of help in getting me pointed in the right direction as I begin hunting New York, and I've already gained some valuable information by lurking on the forum for a little bit. Happy Holidays Everyone!

  17. Make accomodations for dad. He showed his age this season, and I'll be making some permanent stands, with easy access from the driveway. Also gonna build another blind on wheels. As far as on my end, no major changes. Sent from my LM-V405 using Tapatalk

  22. Nice good luck! I saw 19 turkeys, 5 new treestands, endless amounts of scent wicks/cans. 1 dead head spike, and then a live deer. I tried to circle around it but couldn’t find it a second time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  23. 3S-looking for a doe. Kicked 2 doe on walk in- tried to circle them no luck. Walked down to spot I killed the two this year trying to find a spot a little deeper and see a good buck with two doe walking lower trail— I turn them around and sprint back to my tree hoping they loop around on this level now...desperate times call for long shot moves... 25. Yep Dan, not suggesting that a deer wouldn't be dead 99.9% of the time on the deer I saw. I just assumed it would be 100% fatal. It was a that can't be moment. But it was.

  29. this is what i used to do when i had more time to hunt for bobcats, fox, or coyotes. it works. often it was just out in a field. i'd setup just in the field edge. problem is they'd be right on top of me with a rifle. best to have one guy with a shotgun and one with a rifle.

  33. It's pretty easy to check the condition on a .22 barrel. If you don't see sharp lands and grooves it has had a lot of rounds through it and hasn't been properly maintained. Most often the barrel is not "shot out". Ammo for a .22 LR is not hot enough, or fast enough, to remove the rifling in the bore. The trouble is cause by the rifling filling up with lead. Almost any .22 LR barrel can be brought back to life by removing the lead buildup in the bore. It's not an easy process and requires time and effort, but the barrel can be cleaned, without a lot of expense, and the accuracy will return.

  34. already been at least 3 ice rescues on Oneida this season. Guys going out and spudding the ice on the way to see if they can make it. Wish they would charge people $1000 when this happens for all the manpower and risk for others involved for a few fish. Legion has an awesome fish fry for $10. Wait til safe ice!

  42. There lies the misconception.. that shot is not below the spine.. below the top of back but not spine. Actually above the spinal cord.. non lethal shot with a bow or crossbow.. often lethal with a gun due to the shock..

  43. After watching the hunting public guys and at first questioning how and why they use a saddle for bow hunting I thought I’d purchase one and give it a try for the 2020 season. It’s definitely going to take some practice and getting use to but I’m just tired of hanging my stands in the preseason and finding out they need to be elsewhere and being to lazy to move them making a ton of noise. I went with the Tethrd saddle and kit , not sure what climbing method I will use. I’ve been talking with @BowmanMikeand he’s planning on giving it a try this year. Anybody else have one or has hunted out of one let me know what ya think.
