  1. I’m not gonna put anything in the harvest thread since it was PA, but anyways buck came out 6pm 200 yards away, wind died down, I grunted and snortwheezed to pull him in. He came in PISSED! Made 3 scrapes on the way in, shot him at 20 yards and he didn’t even react! Just started walking away! Then I heard him start gargling and he fell over 40 yards in front of me! Clean pass through quartering too.

  2. My son and I have talked about whether we would shoot the piebald 8pt that's hanging around the property, if given the opportunity. Personally, I have decided not to, just because he's so cool, unique, and doesn't have the biggest rack anyways. Don't get me wrong, he's a dandy, but I think I'd have remorse after shooting him. Plus, I'd rather have someone shoot him that would mount him, which I have no desire to. My son has said that he would shoot and mount him, so I was hoping he would get an opportunity this season. Tonight, he texts me and said "Piebald!!". A few minutes later, I get a notification that I have a new pic from the cam by the stand he's in! I rushed to open the pic and saw the piebald passing 12 yards from the stand my son was in!!! OMFG!!! I was only ~80 yards away and was waiting to hear crashing, but it never happened.?.? He texted me a few min later and said he was waiting for it to clear the area, before he climbed down, so he wouldn't spook it. I was puzzled?? When he approached me, I was stunned that he didn't shoot it, being it was a slam dunk at 12 yards!! I asked him what happened? He said, "Dad, it was so cool looking, being ~80% white, and I couldn't do it"! He hung his bow up and pulled out his phone to take a video of it instead!! I would have been happy for him, regardless of what he did, but I'm sure proud of him for deciding for himself that some things are more important than bragging rights. We hunt a private farm that my property adjoins, and no one else has permission to hunt it, so if this buck sticks to this area, he could easily see another year or two if he plays his cards right. BTW, No, it was not as dark as it appears in the pic!! The stand in the background is an ancient rickety old wooden ladder stand. Must have been put there for good reason!

We will be in the stanley area hopefully. There are 3 zones we will hopefully get 1 of them. Cant wait for Dec 1st, thats when the draw happens. Ill be carrying a Christensen arms mesa in .308, i pick that up tomorrow . Time to do alot of E scouting and to get in the best shape of my life lol. Alot of hunting from 7000ft to 8500ft most likely. Ill hopefully be updating this post here and there.

  9. I have been after this doe for a few years now, and she bested me on each previous attempt, as recently as last Sunday morning. Her luck ran out at about 8:00 this morning. None of the bucks that I have killed in the past were as difficult as this old mother. Had I not cleared the leaves under my seat, due to an unfortunate accident the night before, she would have escaped again. TC omega 50 cal Hornady 240 gr XTP , 100 gr 777 to the shoulder blade from 35 yards took her out. I did not see the two young ones with her until she was in her death throes. They looked to be pretty good sized and I hope they make it ok on their own.

  10. Did you ever get your tree hammock seat. Oddly enough, mine came unhooked from the tree last night, landing me on my butt. My head was pounding for a while after that as the shock must have transmitted up the spine. I am not sure if I had it latched tight prior but I noted one of the teeth broken on the little plastic latch after. This morning, I piled up leaves under it to break my fall if it let go again. That worked out well because I was able to silently swivel for a good shot angle on this doe, thanks to the cleared leaves. The seat held my 210 pounds this morning.

  13. That gun worked real well for me for quite a few years, but I was almost ready to break it over my knee, after a rough stretch the last few years. It started with striking a branch with my shot and missing a big doe clean 3 years ago, then a bad hit on one doe and a miss on another 2 years ago, and another missed doe and buck last year. I am fairly certain that the cause of the last 2 clean misses was my new no-line bifocals, which caused me to shoot low. Now, I am using single prescription glasses when hunting and sighting in, and was finally able to get back on track with that gun this morning. I aimed for her shoulder blade, from 35 yards away, and that is where the bullet struck. That is the exit hole in the photo. The entry was centered on the shoulder blade, on the opposite side. I forgot to get a chest girth measurement but I am guessing that she is at least 3.5 years old and I had quite a history with her. I did not see the two fawns, that were with her this morning, until she went down.

  14. We did have a day lighter of one of our shooter bucks yesterday PM. Seems like he was following either a doe or small buck in prior images. Always hate missing those October opps but this one we were DOA, wind straight to him from pretty much the only huntable spot on the parcel due to property lines. No way we would have been able to make a move. Such is life. First scrape action too in Ohio.

  18. Gonna be a long night. Sent one on big doe about 6:15. Full pass thru. Checked arrow and it looks more liver/gut than I like to see. Went home to let the dog out. Gonna go back and take a little look and go from there....hoping it down . Those grim reapers do a job. If not gonna be a longer night of hoping no coyotes.

  19. The most critical component of a cartridge is the bullet, I am a firm believer in matching hunting bullets to the game being hunted for the optimum result. I have a library full of books with the written word about bullets and hunting performance from master hunters and riflemen covering many decades. The number one reason for a particular cartridges failure on game with a properly placed shot is almost always bullet construction and it was especially so back in the early days of the then new jacketed bullets. Lack of penetration due to shedding the jacket causing wounds that due not reach vitals. Modern bullets have come a long way since those early days, better tolerances, better materials, and construction that is matched to the game being hunted. Innovations like interlocking the jacket to grip the core, bonding the jacket to the core, partitions that allows controlled expansion, solid copper and so on that will give deep penetration to the vitals even if a large bone is hit. The Vmax bullet line is a thin jacketed bullet made to expand rapidly on small animals where penetration is not needed, they are also known not to be ricochet prone sailing across the countryside on misses and instead disintegrating when hitting the ground or other hard objects and not going far. As brought out in the 22-250 thread there are much more suitable bullets in the 22 caliber if one uses it for Deer hunting. Al

  20. Grampy i gotta say...... might be a good young fella and glad a young guy is hunting ....... and this is mostly just me in my own head and how i look at hunting.... But if i showed up somewhere to hunt with someone and they said they were doing a deer drive and all carrying AR's i would prob pass and wish them luck. I would be ok with them doing it but prob wouldnt be my hunting crowd.

  22. Briefly There is a wide selection of brands and loads in 22 LR these days. There are 4 basic types with some slight variances even within those types. Hyper velocity loads like CCI Stingers or Velocitors along Remington Yellow Jackets and a bunch of other similar rounds have a bit extra juice, higher velocity and better bullets made mostly for hunting bigger small game like a fox or chucks. Some of these hyper powered loads are not recommended for firearms with match chambers. Accuracy is generally good. Regular Hi Velocity ammo in both hollow points and round nose both are used for hunting. The Winchesters listed above and CCI Mini Mags a good example. A matter of personal preference for HPs or Solids for hunting, HPs kill better but on Squirrels and Rabbits cause a bit more damage, some like the lesser damage to the meat when using solids. Accuracy is good. Bulk ammo sold loose in large quantities is the bargain priced stuff like Remington Golden Bullets, Thunderbolts etc. this stuff is great for plinking and hunting stuff like Rats. Generally not as accurate as the above higher priced ammo and many feel it is very dirty, also more misfires and jams in auto loaders especially. Standard velocity and match ammo, very accurate for the most part and used mostly for target shooting, very reliable. Even though the velocity is lower I like using it for Squirrel hunting because of it's lower report and the fine accuracy it gives in most of my firearms. Almost always loaded with solid bullets there are a few outfits that load HPs for hunting. I have some Ely HPs that shoot one hole groups. I use just about everything made but if I was to be pinned down on a favorite brand it would be CCI When it comes to "anything" rimfire "Rimfire Central .com" is the place to go, it "THE" source. https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ Al

  23. I would take a 22-250 over a 30-30 for a deer round any day. I’ve killed deer with both and have been nothing but disappointed in the performance of a 30-30 on deer. Have yet to have to track one of with my 22-250 or my 222 for that matter. Less meat will be damaged with a monolithic .22 than the lead bullets you use in your 30-30. 28. Getting caught up with a lot of updates. On September 20th the Capital District Sportsman Center held a deer hunting 101 Q and A session live on Facebook. They brought in some local experienced individuals for a wealth of knowledge when it comes to deer hunting. This panel ranged from a Region 4 DEC biologist, a local ECO, retired hunt Ed instructor, to NDA volunteers (yours truly Local public hunting access, deer senses, deer behavior/patterns related to hunting, regulations, emergency situations, and go-to gear to have with you in the field. 33. This is it sir - solid shooting will cover up alot of opportunities with caliber and round selection. I am not the best marksman but I certainly have a favorite go-to that I feel very confident and capable with. So much so, when production was stopped of it, I went and found another barely used one to literally lock up in a safe place should my primary be out of commission. It reminds of that western saying about being aware of the cowboy or rancher with only one rifle. He likely knows how to use it well because that is all he has ever needed.

  39. I didn't join picks and points cuz I'm a meathunter not horns. My 3 point ain't helping any lol. Lucky I get to see a buck just happy for the meat. I wish I could sit in a tree stand and pass up deer that would be crazy cool. But I do get to harvest deer earlier then anyone else when I get called for nuisance deer harvest dead of summer.
