  2. I've planted rye the last three years in this spot, nothing else has grown so after improving the soil the last few years, I gave it another try this year. Beets and Greens from WTI. Sprayed the rye and just put the seed on top July 4th. So far so good, just need to fill in some spots I missed.

  5. Came back this past weekend from a Massachusetts tournament with my 17yr. Old, unfortunately we lost 2 days of ball playing due to rain. Was suppose to be a 4 game guarantee but due to weather teams got to play 2 games. Due to only 2 games the coaches wanted to get all the PO a chance to showcase thier stuff so we're only given 2 innings a piece . My boy started the first game, pitched 2 innings, 4 strikeouts, 1 hit and gave up no runs. Was suppose to be in Gerogia for a tourney all this week but we opted out, heading to a tourney on Rhode Island the end of this month. My 12 year old will be on Long Island all weekend with his team for a tourney. Fun, fun all around!!!

  9. Crazy! My son graduated this year with 480 classmates at a 99.5% graduation rate…we also have very high school taxes…and good teachers which have positive influence on the students. (my son will be majoring in chemistry on a pre-med track. With the very small $ we put in his 529 fund each month since he was born, no additional cost towards his undergraduate degree was needed). Pays to plan ahead! And have parental support! I present to all ages of students on STEM and the importance of education….some students never get out of their neighborhood and have no clue of all the opportunities out in the real world…basically have nothing to aspire to. Parents need to be more involved!

  12. Grilling chicken halves while honoring our fallen heroes. This four pack is brewed by four different breweries in the Rochester area and each beer is specially brewed in honor of one of the three National Guardsmen who died in a helicopter crash in Mendon this year. A real great gesture and fundraiser for the families. This one is a nice IPA brewed by Rising Storm. The others are equally tasty but most importantly they raise funds to support the families of those who died in service to the country. Can’t think of any better reason to tip one back. Salute. You heroes.

  13. In the commission of the current gun violence are criminals NOT breaking currently standing laws? What needs to happen is enforcement of standing laws, NOT throwing money at the problem, writing more stringent laws, filing more lawsuits. But NOTHING will happen until someone who is a criminal get's held accountable and punished....it seems the Democratic way has become, scream there's a problem, throw dollars at it, vilify the masses and not punish those INDIVIDUALS responsible..... so fed up with the BS thinking. If my dog pisses on my couch every day do I punish my dog or the dogs in the neighborhood who are behaving?

  20. For an update on my Daughter possibly joining 10U Travel.... They couldn't get us much information at all except and I quote "a tournament over memorial day weekend and July 4th weekend and maybe some others" They had so little information on travel that even the Coach couldn't get any information and backed out. So in the end she staying with the 8U house team and they are holding optional practices every Tuesday for those that want to come out. We went last week and she was 1 of 5 girls to show up. The best part is those 4 others that showed up are her best friends so she basically got to practice and goof around with her best friends for an hour and a half.

  21. This is the equivalent of big and beasty planted 8-15 for you. You can probably do the same a few weeks earlier I would suspect. August 1. They love a quality fertilizer 30 days post planting.

  22. I know some beets can be earlier planted but is July 4 early for brassica in your area? We've been moving our brassica planting later and later each year with better results IMO. Our sweet spot has been August 8-15 this past year. Good seeding rate, quality soil amendments - and lots of fertilizer lol. Our July plantings have had much less activity on them due to what I believe LEG noted with less palatability. We had 80% of our bulbs be softball or smaller this year and we had barely anything left come shed season. And what was left...was the big stuff.

  24. Correct. The ideal spacing is about 4-5max germinated seeds on a paper plate. The more spacing the better they grow, Brassicas do not like competition. But the bigger they get the bulb may become less desirable as it becomes more like woody browse rather than a treat. I like to keep them no bigger than softballs if i can help it. But i also pick Late July and Early August and find when the moisture is present to seed. When you rbulbs get that big, do they just eat whats above the ground? an leave the rest?

  27. When my wife started her position in Buffalo schools they had the same problem with getting parents to attend. My wife said let’s order pizza and wings and say come to the open house and we will feed you . The following year was record numbers and when the parents did show the schools handed out a free book along with the pizza.

  43. I won't comment on where you should hunt this property without actually walking it myself. Too many variables to count, to be able give specific stand sites. But......I have hunted similar terrain most of my life, and have a few generalizations that may help. Bucks like to bed just over the top of the ridge, with the wind at their backs, and to be able to see down, especially south facing slopes. On some of these side hills, there will be benches, or steps that is more or less level ground that can be walked on the side of the hill. These benches, are used as travel corridors by the deer. More so if there is a stand of prefered oaks along that hillside. These trails will be very evident when you find them! The deer have been using them for a long time! A great pinch point is at the head, or top of a steep gully, in between feeding areas! Deer will use the relative easy way around the top, instead of the steep sides of the gully. Classic funnel. I've used this on public, and private land with success. A large, thick, swampy area, at the foot, or between hills will always have deer bedded within it's thick and wet confines. Walk the edges to find the heaviest deer runs coming into and out of the swamp. If there is heavy human pressure, the thickest, nastiest cover is where the deer will always go. So don't bust them out! Hunt those major trails coming and going from the swamp to and from feeding. But only when the wind is right!!! This is where multiple set ups within a good, small area are a must, so you can move if the wind changes. Speaking of wind....... In the hills and mountains, the thermals and drafts can be a friend, or a foe to the hunter. Always keep in mind that cool air sinks, and warm air rises. And just because the wind is blowing a certain direction on top, it won't mean the wind is the same on the ground where you are! One of my favorite spots on the lake property usually will have a NE wind. But on the ground where I'm set up halfway up the hill, my wind will be SW!!! As the wind comes over the top and curls, picture a wave. As I said, these are just generalizations I've picked up in the last half century hunting the hills. There are so many more, and no two properties are exactly the same. But the pictures look very promising, and I wish you good luck and much success hunting in PA!!!

  44. Some good advice in this thread. I now wait until August to plant brassicas. I'm trying to cut back my seeding rate as well. I just go back and hit the bare spots with winter rye or wheat. Giving them a shot of nitrogen once the plants are 4+" tall will give them a heck of a growth spurt (as long as there is enough moisture). As for adding a little clover, it can be done. I would suggest cutting your seeding rate even further on the brassicas, as they will just shade the clover out. I gave up on this method and now frost/snow seed to get clover going for the spring/summer. This may not be an option for you since you don't live close by. Trying different things is part of the fun and how we learn. I'm interested in no-till methods, but even more interested in no spray methods. I guess I need to find someone to fabricate a crimper for me.
