chrisw
2 small bucks was it for me this morning. Fairly quiet opener as far as close shots go, flurry of shooting around sunup then went pretty quiet overall. Was planning an all dayer but got cold and wasn't feeling optimistic about the rest of the day there. Going back out to a different piece tonight. wolc123
It was chilly out on the Pepper Park pier in National City CA this morning, maybe 50 degrees. I was thankful that I had my jacket in the car. The only deer I saw this morning, was the bucktail that I had tied to the jig that I was using. The Spanish mackerel were biting ok, and I saw about a dozen of those landed by the natives at the other end of the pier. They looked to be about 12” long on average. They were using multi hooked live bait rigs. I saw at least one “double” come in. They were keeping them in plastic 5 gallon buckets. I narrowly averted the skunk myself (2 times). One of them mackerel hit my jig and I hooked it. Not much fight from them as it just basically wiggled in place. That one manage to wiggle off though, before I got him half way up to the pier. After maybe an hour, with no other bites on my jig, I finally felt a light tap and set the hook. This fish had some heft to it, and it pulled out a little drag. It was a decent, slightly above average sized spotted bay bass, maybe 14”. After a few runs, I was able to haul it up on the pier. I released it, relatively unharmed. The other skunk I avoided was hiding behind a trash can, ready for ambush, on the sidewalk to the pier. Fortunately, a guy walking his dog warned me before I got blasted. One of the natives must not have been so lucky however, and it smelled like he got sprayed pretty good. There was also another, feline hunter, working the park this morning. I always see them when I am there.
New York Hillbilly
Came out at 11. Toes finally thawed out. Man did they ache! Headed back out in a few,but this time sitting in the unfinished elevated box blind for the first time. At least my feet will not be on cold metal or the frozen ground. Let doe after doe walk by this morning. Three of them passed quietly together about 15-20 feet from the base of my tree. I can't believe there was not one buck in the crowd this morning. Let's see what the afternoon sit has to offer. Congrats to those who scored this morning!
mlammerhirt
No go for me in 9H. No sense in working on a heart attack. One week delay. The critters will be running still. My 9h spot in Eden is deep.....9h Collins center is very huntable just can't get there. Driving ban in place and road isn't even clear.Sent from my SM-A716V using Tapatalk
mlammerhirt
Me and my son drive from cheektowaga yo Cuba this morning to hunt at gmans/Greg's. The hardest thing this morning was getting the door open to my house so we could get out. Once we got out of cheektowaga it was smooth driving. Good luck allWouldn't have been worth the ticket with the driving ban still in place....police are pissed and ticketing like crazy. 50calpeephole
Been a frigid day. Saw a doe but didn't have backstop for the shot, and I've passed on the same spike 2x in the last 8ish hours

New York Hillbilly
Back on stand. This time in the half built elevated blind. Sort of out of the wind (teeth chattering) and had to drag my ladder over here with my 4 wheeler because I now discovered I lost my truck key Fob!! I guess I’ll worry about that later. Yikes!!!! As I’m texting a close shot! Heart jump and instant warmth!
Cory
Had a doe standing at my back door this morning. I got to the stand and after 10 minutes seen a big body moving my way. It was a big doe and her fawn. I thought about taking her. But when she 30 yards out I seen her licking and grooming her fawn. I couldn’t do it. Only heard 2 shots all day. Both my neighbor. He shot a small 8.

Just Lucky
Seen a nice buck about 615 this am. About 930 seen 3 doe, shot a doe at 230 pm, and seen an 8 at 430. Very good day of hunting. Shot her with the 270 using Hornaday 140 grain sst. Dropped on impact. Tore up the front half of her. The biggest complaint I have had with that gun is lack of knockdown power/ no blood trail. Hopefully that issue is fixed /
New York Hillbilly
Just before sunset I watch a doe and her fawn enter the field above me, about 150 yards away. I watched them putter around there a bit, and then they walked the trail in front of me to the lower field. They passed about 60 yards, and I let them walk. About 15 minutes later here comes another deer into the upper field. This one is a nice 2.5 year old 8 point. For whatever reason it felt like my heart was gonna pound out of my chest. I was able to keep my head calm though and watched him feed in the upper field through my scope. I decided if I could get a good shot on him I would take it rather than wait for him to decide to follow the does because I was afraid it would be too dark. I let him browse around up there and kept the scope on his vitals. When he finally turned perfectly broadside, I even waited until his front leg on my side went forward, then held low with full intention to put it behind his elbow and into his heart. I pulled the trigger and he blew out of there like he was on fire. I waited a few minutes then got down, and slowly circled into the wind to try and get around in front of where he ran. I really though I would find him piled up as I circled to where he was standing when I shot. No blood, no hair, no deer! I got to where he was standing and there in the dirt directly under where he was standing is where the shot hit , leaving a gouge in the ground and dirt kicked all over from the miss. In hind site, I guess trying to hold so low was not such a good idea. Had I held mid body, I would be putting a pic of me and the deer on here. But, in the end it was a fun opening day, and I'm glad it was a clean miss rather than chasing a deer all over in the dark. : ) 1
heavuser
Buck down! He came strolling in, nose to the ground the entire time. I hadn't even planned on hunting today but my wife encouraged me to go out later in the day. No treestand, no blind, I sat on the ground just waiting to see if anything would come around. As dumb luck would have it, this is my first mature buck I've ever killed and I wasn't even trying. 20 minutes after I sat down back against a tree, boom. I had been seeing this buck on a few of my cams, one in particular that I took down awhile ago as movement went cold. Bullet went in from the shoulder and out the opposite side, he went about 10yrds before I heard the crash. His heart was a jellified mess. Savage 220, 3M. genesee_mohican
Another opener in the books. It was a windy cold day and a not so fun all day sit, but I was 28ft up in a pine tree all day. Had a 4pt come thru at 8, the a group of 5 doe at 9. I had a few stands to choose from, oh well.
