  1. I went to see my doctor yesterday to go over results of my C.T. Scan of my lungs that I had this past Monday, and it was great news. The scan showed no return of cancer, and I won't have to have another scan for 12 months instead of every 6 that I have been going to. It has been 24 months since my lung cancer diagnosis, and 20 months since chemo and surgery to remove my lung...and I am cancer free.. I wake up everyday and try to be positive, and the doctors news this week makes me very positive...can't wait till Oct 1 opener!!

  7. Even tho I am in a union and like my job....i would vote for almost anyone who ran against Cuomo as I believe the 2nd amendment is equally if not more important than many others. We can't let them take our freedoms and it starts with the 2nd bc without that how are you going to protect the rest?

  8. Think log building nestled into a wooded section of the back yard. Perhaps a nice stone fireplace, with a well-stocked refrigerator hidden behind a wooden door. Big-screen TV, and some great sound system. And how about a back room workshop for reloading, and archery gear repair and tuning. Oh what the hell, let's attach a 30 yard indoor bow range, and perhaps a lift door that accesses a nice shot to the outdoor 200 yard shooting range and a nice sandbagged shooting bench to check out those new reloads. And maybe it's time to cultivate a new hobby of fly-tying. I'm sure some generous space for a fly-tying bench could find its way in there right next to the fishing rod racks and the tackle shelves. And the final touches of a nice comfy couch and instructions as to where and when the wife needs to take the meals. Life could be mighty fine.

  9. One of my favorite and most exciting tactics throughout the season. My most productive sets have come from trying to rattle bucks from one covers edge to another covers edge down wind, with a small open area between them. Bucks will tend to emerge from the far cover and scan the opening to look for the fighting bucks. When they don't see them in the clear, sometimes that's enough to peak their curiosity enough to pull them across the clearing to your edge when they think the two fighters have already made their way into the next thicket. Rattling works really well here early in archery season, but your results may vary depending on the structure of the deer heard in your area.

  10. Above what others have said. The first legal, safe and ethical shot you have on a deer within you confident range, take it. Don't worry about size and age and all the others hot button topics. Enjoy it and don't stress about it. Find a companion, or better yet a few, to enjoy it with. For me the best part of the season if doing it with family and friends.

  14. So went out to Spring Farm in Sag Harbor today with a few buddies and had our first pheasant hunt!! It was a blast, it was incredible watching the dogs work and moving with them flushing birds. We ended up getting 16 pheasants!! And spent the rest of the day cleaning the birds back at the house and cooked one up to enjoy our harvest!!

  19. Hit a hot button for me. (and as long as we are derailing, might as well go for a 20 car pile up...lol). I will not bow hunt in a heavy rain or if one is forecast in the next few hours. I think it is asking for trouble if you do. Unless you are "perfect" and can make the "perfect" shot every time, but lets be "honest" about it who is that "perfect"? Gun is another story.

  20. Keep the sun at your back and also back up to cover that quarters toward the trail. You're not really visible until the deer passes you. Easier to draw as the deer is focused where it's going and not where it's been.

  23. no it's not a long distance but when you're trying for less walking/sweating and to sleep another 20 min. a slow pedal on the bike will keep the stink away. $100 for a decent cart and the haul isn't so bad.

  25. After reading this thread I am not even sure what planet I am on anymore. I am quite sure of one thing though.... people on this forum like to preach like they are saints and write these well thought out comments. I think most of it is BS and I bet 50% of the guys who talk about how bad it is have done it at some point. Makes me laugh..... I personally don't bait, if baiting is putting a little something in front of a camera to get the deer to stop for a pre season pic once and a while then yeah I have baited deer in the past. I can tell you this, take a trip to Ohio or Saskatchewan where you can bait and you tell me how easy it is to kill a mature buck. Anyone can kill a young buck or doe with or without bait, when it comes to mature deer it is a whole different story! If you don't' do everything else right and do your homework you won't kill a good one unless you have dumb luck. Trust me that a pile of C'mere deer in the middle of the woods isn't going to draw deer in from all over. Anyways to answer the question....NO I wouldn't want baiting to be legal, I like the rule the way it is. As far as would I do it?? Be tough not to if I could, but I would try not to! I would like to say I wouldn't but then I would be lying like most others in this thread. It's kind of like crossbows... I was TOTALLY AGAINST IT but now that they are legal it is tough to not have the mentality of if you can't beat em' join em'.... IMO

  29. This is not about safety. it is about control. They want the guns in control. this was all a well planned out scheme. The dems on the federal level got into Andy's ear and convinced him that this was his ticket to Washington. We were a test state. The safe act was penned by bloombergs boys and they were waiting fore just the right tragedy to roll it out. Andy used it as a political feather in his cap. If he gets reelected that is a referendum that this was all ok and move on to more control and more ststes will attmept to roll out similar legislation. Psychological testing of children will not help. Most people suffer their first break in late teens early 20's. If you trust the school system to do this testing, trust me they are on board with getting rid of guns. Look at the common core curriculum and see what they say about the 2nd amendment. They are influencing children that guns are bad. believe me one of the questions on that test will be do mommy and daddy have guns and if so are you scared to be in your home. They say yes t both guess who will be at your door. Surrender your guns or your children. So expecting that system to be an ally is not a good plan.

  30. I came out of the trees quite a few years ago. Sure it plays into my "extra challenge" thing with my hunting, but I have to be honest, it was a fear of heights that actually put me on the ground. I am a blind builder though. I think that if I were to forgo a blind, I would learn to shoot with a ghillie suit (not the easiest thing in the world). But that is about the best open-ground camo that I can think of.

  31. tip is sit on a blow down that has a root ball you can see over, gives you plenty of cover to move and to draw behind. And also never set your bow on the ground, always have it in your hand and ready, it can happen fast and you need to be prepared.

  32. I have been hunting like this now for over 10 years and it sure make the heart beat fast as you get ready to arrow a deer when it eyeball to eyeball. the biggest problem is scent control and also how to get the bow up to shoot so the deer does not spot your movement. not like in a tree stand when they sure do not see or smell you.

  33. Go get your camera Red. Just apologize to the nice ranger, and tell him you must have forgot to tag your cam when your cat jumped out of the truck and took off into the park. Make sure you leave a picture of "Felix" and your contact info with him in case someone finds him,lol

  34. I'm a call-o-holic! It makes me feel more a part of the hunt by communicating with the deer instead of just waiting for them. If I'm not making some kind of animal noise, I probably fell asleep on stand. I remember one time I was lowering my bow and pack from my stand on a wet rope. As the rope slid through my wet jersey glove hand towards the ground it was making a long, drawn out, vibrating grunt sound. When my gear finally landed at the base of my tree, I turned around in my climber to start my decent and spotted a handsome buck sprinting in from behind me. He stopped and looked around for a while at 10yds, then slowly walked away as my bow laid on the ground at his feet.

  35. Sometimes there's a bit of suffering involved if you really want to be around the bigger deer. I've been known to hunt swamps with a small/tiny canoe. Half paddle and half drag for extended distances. It's not always fun, but it makes for great memories and great stories. Almost anything that will get you where others fear to tread is a good thing. Best of luck to you, and keep us posted.

  36. yeah sorta seemed that way a bit... i think part of the problem is the acclimation process or lack there of in this case. i know i wasnt just thrown into the mix and handed a gun and fell in love with the sport. it came with many many years at a young age shadowing my father just being in the woods in general. whether is be scouting or plain sitting in a blind with my dad during the season but i knew when my time came and i was legal to hunt with him rather then just shadowing him, i was READY. i WANTED to be there and WANTED to hunt. theres things as hunters we can do to help the process if we hope our little ones will one day follow suit. not just give em a gun and say shoot, theres seat time and a learning curve. Now, not all kids will want to hunt but may pick it up down the road as they mature some or become more involved. the road is long, so dont ruin it trying so hard in the beginning forcing them to hunt! it may just put a bad taste in their mouth

  39. I have collected quite a few books over the years. I do not like the "how to" books. I like real hunting story/history type books. I would recommend anything by Peter Hathaway Capstick. Mostly about African hunting, but his books are very entertaining to say the least. Other entertaining authors in various type hunting/gun related works are, Robert Ruark, Theodore Roosevelt, Col. Charles Askins, Elmer Keith, Thomas McIntyre, James A. Swan, Ted Kerasote just to name a few. Some of these writers are from yesteryear, some are modern. Look the names up and anything they wrote is good.

  47. The safe act had probably been waiting in the wings for years and I'm sure it didn't take a six figure paid strategist to tell cuomo to drop the hammer on it in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting. Since his adgenda is purely political, I don't doubt that he'll try to add onto the safe act when in reality he is sitting idly by and waging no kind of war against crime. He's the biggest criminal in the state!

  48. I think if more of the hunting crowd fought against the safe act, the outcome would've been a little different. It seems that a lot of hunters think that the safe act just affects the "tactical" crowd and it couldn't be further from the truth.

  49. LOL.....I have some warthog tusks as towel holders in the bathroom. Good to see some pics;<) Started late last fall working on a spot to consolidate mounts to an area and have been too busy to complete it with work and other activities. Have around 25 shoulder/pedestal mounts, some lifesizes and numerous skulls and skins that need hanging. Goal now is end of the year........I hope.
