  1. I went to see my doctor yesterday to go over results of my C.T. Scan of my lungs that I had this past Monday, and it was great news. The scan showed no return of cancer, and I won't have to have another scan for 12 months instead of every 6 that I have been going to. It has been 24 months since my lung cancer diagnosis, and 20 months since chemo and surgery to remove my lung...and I am cancer free.. I wake up everyday and try to be positive, and the doctors news this week makes me very positive...can't wait till Oct 1 opener!!

  7. Even tho I am in a union and like my job....i would vote for almost anyone who ran against Cuomo as I believe the 2nd amendment is equally if not more important than many others. We can't let them take our freedoms and it starts with the 2nd bc without that how are you going to protect the rest?

  8. Think log building nestled into a wooded section of the back yard. Perhaps a nice stone fireplace, with a well-stocked refrigerator hidden behind a wooden door. Big-screen TV, and some great sound system. And how about a back room workshop for reloading, and archery gear repair and tuning. Oh what the hell, let's attach a 30 yard indoor bow range, and perhaps a lift door that accesses a nice shot to the outdoor 200 yard shooting range and a nice sandbagged shooting bench to check out those new reloads. And maybe it's time to cultivate a new hobby of fly-tying. I'm sure some generous space for a fly-tying bench could find its way in there right next to the fishing rod racks and the tackle shelves. And the final touches of a nice comfy couch and instructions as to where and when the wife needs to take the meals. Life could be mighty fine.

  9. One of my favorite and most exciting tactics throughout the season. My most productive sets have come from trying to rattle bucks from one covers edge to another covers edge down wind, with a small open area between them. Bucks will tend to emerge from the far cover and scan the opening to look for the fighting bucks. When they don't see them in the clear, sometimes that's enough to peak their curiosity enough to pull them across the clearing to your edge when they think the two fighters have already made their way into the next thicket. Rattling works really well here early in archery season, but your results may vary depending on the structure of the deer heard in your area.

  10. Above what others have said. The first legal, safe and ethical shot you have on a deer within you confident range, take it. Don't worry about size and age and all the others hot button topics. Enjoy it and don't stress about it. Find a companion, or better yet a few, to enjoy it with. For me the best part of the season if doing it with family and friends.

  14. So went out to Spring Farm in Sag Harbor today with a few buddies and had our first pheasant hunt!! It was a blast, it was incredible watching the dogs work and moving with them flushing birds. We ended up getting 16 pheasants!! And spent the rest of the day cleaning the birds back at the house and cooked one up to enjoy our harvest!!

  16. I try to take a stroll around my hunting grounds past my stands every day. VERY rarely do I ever miss a hike completely. I'll likely keep my patterns the same right up to, and throughout season unless I notice a major change I may have a negative effect on. As long as my patterns stay the same, I don't believe the deer will change theirs much once we flip the calendars to October.

  19. Hit a hot button for me. (and as long as we are derailing, might as well go for a 20 car pile up...lol). I will not bow hunt in a heavy rain or if one is forecast in the next few hours. I think it is asking for trouble if you do. Unless you are "perfect" and can make the "perfect" shot every time, but lets be "honest" about it who is that "perfect"? Gun is another story.

  21. Probably don't want to support him then, He is probably for outdated concepts like personal responsibility, work ethic and making it on you own merit. LOL. Seriously though if he came out an said he was increasing taxes on me, I would still vote for him this year. This election to me is a one topic race. We can't afford for it not to be. If he gets a pass on this, the momentum is lost and it will embolden the antis like nothing before in history.

  22. Keep the sun at your back and also back up to cover that quarters toward the trail. You're not really visible until the deer passes you. Easier to draw as the deer is focused where it's going and not where it's been.

  23. Elites draw like butter and shoot like lasers, I don't know if I'd ever be able to shoot another bow after I purchased my first Elite last year.

  26. My first deer with a bow took 7 years. Back in the 60's, a bunch of us guys would have Monday morning gatherings around the coffee pot at work and talk over the events of our bowhunts over the weekend. The big topic back then was when somebody actually saw a deer. And boy did the stories get super involved and intense when someone actually got a shot. And if somebody actually got one, the BS session went well into actual working hours.....lol. And there was no question of "Gee, what did he score?" First of all it wasn't likely to even be a buck, and second there was nobody knew or cared about any kind of scoring system. So 5 years without getting a deer is not anything that is going to get my sympathy..... lol. People sure have gotten spoiled rotten these days.

  27. no it's not a long distance but when you're trying for less walking/sweating and to sleep another 20 min. a slow pedal on the bike will keep the stink away. $100 for a decent cart and the haul isn't so bad.

  29. Used to do in some of the public land spots in Florida that were vast pieces of property (60,000 acres) used to ride the levee's and swamp buggy trails ... When we killed one , u gut it , put the cavity over the handle bars and seat so it's " riding" the bike per say... Get a little basket for the rack to rest in up front and a book rack for the rear end so it doesn't ride the back tire .. Put stand on ur back and push the deer out on the bike no sweat ... Did it with hogs too ! No round trips , no dragging !

  32. Thats one of the issues hunting field edges. Once in a while you can get into a setup where you can access and exit safely. Otherwise, the coyote yip, getting a partner to drive up, and taking your chance is all you can do. Getting away from field edges is a better way to hunt for thr most part. Take your shot at a field edge set once in a while but dont hunt right over the food source daily and expect them not to know about it.

  33. I came out of the trees quite a few years ago. Sure it plays into my "extra challenge" thing with my hunting, but I have to be honest, it was a fear of heights that actually put me on the ground. I am a blind builder though. I think that if I were to forgo a blind, I would learn to shoot with a ghillie suit (not the easiest thing in the world). But that is about the best open-ground camo that I can think of.

  34. tip is sit on a blow down that has a root ball you can see over, gives you plenty of cover to move and to draw behind. And also never set your bow on the ground, always have it in your hand and ready, it can happen fast and you need to be prepared.

  35. well in your defense they can hear sounds with a frequency of 30,000+ hertz opposed to an average person peaking at 20,000 hertz. the sound has to be very loud though as that high a frequency won't travel very far at all in the deer woods. another thing is we usually wait until we hear a sound but a deer is always moving those big satellite ears to pick up sound. in general we do hear the same... as long as the person has a hearing aid if needed of course. lol

  39. I'm a call-o-holic! It makes me feel more a part of the hunt by communicating with the deer instead of just waiting for them. If I'm not making some kind of animal noise, I probably fell asleep on stand. I remember one time I was lowering my bow and pack from my stand on a wet rope. As the rope slid through my wet jersey glove hand towards the ground it was making a long, drawn out, vibrating grunt sound. When my gear finally landed at the base of my tree, I turned around in my climber to start my decent and spotted a handsome buck sprinting in from behind me. He stopped and looked around for a while at 10yds, then slowly walked away as my bow laid on the ground at his feet.

  40. Sometimes there's a bit of suffering involved if you really want to be around the bigger deer. I've been known to hunt swamps with a small/tiny canoe. Half paddle and half drag for extended distances. It's not always fun, but it makes for great memories and great stories. Almost anything that will get you where others fear to tread is a good thing. Best of luck to you, and keep us posted.

  41. Lol Baiting is just another tool in your arsenal, not much different than using a gun to hunt instead of a bow.

  42. even if you buy a license and a couple doe tags (or 4 depending on the area) The price per pound can be cheaper than beef. We choose to make it more. I've seen hunters some pretty remote areas of the state that do count on it annually.

  43. I have been meaning to put up a couple recipes and haven't gotten to it. Next week I will put this one up. (WNY can add his spicier version) I will also post the Italian sausage, peperoni and my favorite- summer sausage. Coming into the season I would love to see the recipe section get active again. beats talking about ISIS or baiting...lol Side note----I want to find a real good venison hot dog recipe and one for polish sausage.

  48. The safe act had probably been waiting in the wings for years and I'm sure it didn't take a six figure paid strategist to tell cuomo to drop the hammer on it in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shooting. Since his adgenda is purely political, I don't doubt that he'll try to add onto the safe act when in reality he is sitting idly by and waging no kind of war against crime. He's the biggest criminal in the state!

  49. I think if more of the hunting crowd fought against the safe act, the outcome would've been a little different. It seems that a lot of hunters think that the safe act just affects the "tactical" crowd and it couldn't be further from the truth.
