  2. My boy committed to a college, playing next level baseball, so excited for him. Not an easy task considering only 6% of all HS players go on to play in college. Started this journey at age 5 and he's now 17. Give this kid alot of credit and dedication to a game he truly loves. He will be playing at the College of Mt. Saint Vincent in Riverdale, NY.

  4. Moved into my house last December and wanted to do something to attract deer and turkeys into the backyard to watch. I had no equipment to work the soil, so in the spring, I decided to just broadcast Whitetail Institute Fusion (Clover & Chicory) seed, hoping it would grow well enough. I did a soil test and broadcast fertilizer. I later ended up adding Whitetail Institute Edge (mix of clover, chicory, alfalfa, and several other seeds) for more variety for the critters. I mow it every 2 weeks, as high as my lawn tractor will cut (~4"), and it bounces right back with a vengeance! I've certainly gotten my moneys worth out of it already, considering I only have a couple bags of seed and a bag of fertilizer into it!! It's really exceeded my expectations as far as growth and the deer and turkeys love it too! I watched a doe feeding in it the other night and when she picked her head up, she had clover stems draping out of all sides of her mouth! I have turkeys that spend several hours every day out feeding in the clover, bugging, preening, and just lounging in the shade! There's 4-5 rabbits that we see as well! Really relaxing and enjoyable watching the critters! I also planted 4 late bearing apple trees along the edge of the yard and plan to add 6 or so late bearing crab apple trees next spring. #countrylife!!!

  8. You have a .308. Use it. The 22-250 is designed from the ground up as a varminter. Yes, with the proper bullet ,placed you can certainly kill a deer...as you could with a .22 long rifle rimfire. But with all the variables out there, twigs, angles, last microsecond goofs with the trigger, it will be very unforgiving. You have a proper rifle. It would be irresponsible not to use it. FYI I have owned several 22-250s, in different configurations, handloaded for all of them I love the cartridge for its given purpose. I also have, reload and use .308s....several over the years. It is a fine capable round. Any reasonable shot it is capable of taking cleanly.

  9. Wear your harness but more importantly take down your stands after the season!! Parts rust, wear, rot ect.. almost all accidents I hear are from.stands that have been left of for years, some decades!! The I change straps every year is much easier done on the ground prior to being put up than trying to do it while hung.. I get flack from taking down 30 stands a year and putting them back up 95% on same trees I took them out of.. but my friends and family are using them and if I can jump on them 2 ft off the ground with 240lbs and they hold I know they will be OK for use. I have replaced cables, bolts ,straps and whole attachment systems on stands that go back to late 80s. Proper maintenance/ up keep is the 1st step in reducing your chance of a fall.

  14. As a regular goose hunter here are my thoughts. The author states that he edited some footage but he definitely should have edited out the profanities from the video. Foul language hunters display a negative image of hunters and is not something we want to pass on to our new young hunters. Secondly cripples do happen to the best shooters. It is ideal to have a dog to send after cripples but if you do not have a dog you should slowly and safely walk towards a cripple until you are in range to dispatch it. The video shows a hunter running with a loaded gun towards a cripple which is an unsafe practice. A safe hunt is a good hunt any day. valoroutdoors.com

  15. I kept going and going lol. The nice thing about Stoddard is it runs parallel to the road. I took my nephews fishing last weekend and they kept saying "are we going to catch a huge bass?!" And I said guys when I go fishing I just want to catch whatever happens to live there. These tiny trout make me as happy as that bluefin Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  21. My son has been begging to go out for this early antlerless season. He is 12 yrs old and unbelievably in to hunting lol. We got up at 5am today and made our way to our "comfy" 2 man stand. Around 645 we had a small buck come by and maybe 15 mins later a group of 4 flat heads were making thier wayin the same direction. The big lead doe knew something was up but at 40 yards she didnt have a chance lol. He made a great shot and she ran maybe 60 yards. To say he was pumped is a understatement. In his words after the shot it felt like he was making the whole tree stand shake lol. So happy to be able to share these times with him and see him truly love being in the woods.

  27. Good on F&S for posting the emails back and forth to support them. I still don't know that they did due diligence on having things verified before they shared the story, I guess they wanted to be the first. Still, the truth came to light, and like you said, the guy screaming "fake news" to try to play victim is a shame. Good thing it isn't going to fly with the supporting information that F&S has.

  32. Fred's style of hunting was a far cry from what techniques are being used today. He had many hunts that aired on the old ABC American Sportsman TV series and he was not sitting up in a tree, tripod stand or in a ground blind overlooking a pile of corn or a field planted with Deer food as what is shown as hunting on the outdoor channels these days. He was mostly a still hunter-spot and stalk and one of the reasons he liked hunting in the rain, It helps cover noise and scent. I do not like getting wet myself but I have had pretty fair luck hunting in rain and have got shooting close to Deer many times sneaking around in it. Get a good set of rain gear and or wear wool and you will be surprised how much rain you can tolerate. Al

  33. Whole pork butts cut it all into chunks fat an all ,removing bone of course . I mix 50/50 pork butt to venison. Still probably comes about 85 % lean . I buy a case of pork butt from sams or Wegmans who ever is cheaper. What I don't use during deer season gets smoked in the summer.

  39. Better to shoot incoming geese, then let them land and try to shoot them in the backside as they try to fly away. I think a lot of geese were crippled here. I'm afraid this video will not enhance the image of goose hunters among the general populace. Heck, can't even let my grandchildren watch it, unless I turn the sound off and want to explain the poor shooting choices that were made. I doubt you would consider taking the video down from Youtube, but I would like you to.

  42. My story is remarkably similar to Steuben Jerry’s. I grew up in the Suburbs of Rochester (Henrietta) on the edge of the fields at that time. No one I knew hunted but camping and fishing and Scouting were all a part of our family so the outdoors was always a big part of my upbringing. I started (legally) hunting 47 years ago with a Sears and Roebuck Ted Williams 12 gauge. That thing was great for pheasants and ducks but wouldn’t throw slugs for crap. Missed a bunch of deer before I picked up a recurve bow and killed my first deer, a gnarly 12 point, with it a half mile from my parents house. That got me hooked on deer. Many deer later I still prefer to bow hunt but have taken deer with just about everything but a spear. Still trying for that bull elk. Three cow elk, but the bulls keep giving me the slip and I’m running out of time for that chase.

  44. Well made the trip down to PA to grab my cameras. One Produced a bunch of does and fawns one possibly 2 good bucks and my first bear picture. Had the camera set to high I had a bunch of pictures of the back of deer. 2nd camera someone was nice to leave my camera but helped themselves to my card. Not the first time that's happened. However on my way to the camera I jumped 5 does and a spike. Plus the trail in front of the camera was tore apart with large tracks.

  45. You'd be surprised who my customers are - heads of IT no less, lol. It's less about understanding the tech (although still applicable) and more about staying current with the companies, their tech, the carriers, industry, etc. Since I deal with Browning, I was aware of the firmware scenario and understand why it's not on their site. It's because it doesn't impact all chipsets and SIM profiles. Only the ones impacted. They call in. In the auto industry, it's like a TSB vs a recall. That is a good comp.

  46. 35 years for me but will be my hardest season by far, I will be without my hunting partner, best friend, my dad, lost him back on July 24th. It will be bitter sweet because I lost my life long buddy but excited for my 13 year old to take him on his first ever deer hunt, his grandpa was so excited to get the chance to see him hunt and buy him his first license. I'm just trying to make the best of this season and passing along what my dad taught me. My only goal is to put my son on a deer and have a good time. It hurts like heck, but I must push on.
