  1. Thinking of inflation , peoples struggles, can’t pay their college loans etc. got me thinking of my upbringing . I was born in ‘59 two sisters two parents who built a 1100 SF ranch house in Webster ,on a triple lot they bought off my Moms dad , who had a vineyard there . Dad worked at Kodak, Mom stayed at home till I was in like 4 or 5th grade and could take care of myself then she got a job . Mom cooked from scratch , made my sisters dresses and patched my jeans . When you got a hole in your socks ,she put a light burb in it and sewed up,the hole , she reused tin foil , lunch bags and so forth . Hand soap ? You know when it’s down to a sliver and you throw it out ,she saved them ,put them in a mesh bag, tied off the end ,and then you washed with that. She never bought cookies ,she made them , snacks well popcorn ,an apple or orange , and an occasional half gallon of ice cream , and kids weren’t fat imagine that . We had a garden 150x70 feet , Dad took vacation time come harvest , mom canned and froze a lot of food, dad took a deer every now and then. oh our house had a stone driveway for many years , paved ones were a luxury . Dad would cash his check and give my mom some money which she put in labeled envelopes, one was “ fish fry “ so after a few weeks we could go have a fish fry dinner . Today people eat out on a whim a couple times a week . We weren’t poor, dad made good money , but people knew the value of it . Dad built our addition , painted the cars did all the mechanical work though . During the ‘70s gas crisis he car pooled with two, other guys ,and continued that for many years . I had a total of three bikes my entire upbringing , a baseball glove bat, football , basketball and a BB gun , can’t recall much else . Fast forward to,today, young folks can’t repay their loans …. But they have iPhones , three steaming services, gym membership , a jet ski , take vacations ,new sneakers a few times a year oh and craft beer of course .

  2. He shut down the Keystone pipeline and took other measures to squander America’s energy independence on his first day in office. No single individual is more directly responsible for the high prices we are paying at the pump and the failing economy we are all experienced today. The sad part is, he don’t know no better . I am not blaming him when the fault lies entirely with the fools who voted for him. Anyone with half a brain could see his incompetence by listening to a single sentence of his speech.

  3. Good question. I am sure it’s a combo of many things. Values have changed for the worse and technology has led to less parental influence and more peer influence. Not necessarily a good thing for youth. Then again, some parents should not be parenting.

  4. When I was a kid at home and acted up, I got my ass kicked.... When I acted up on the school bus, I got my ass kicked.... When I acted up at school I got my ass kicked.... When I screwed up in the service, I got my ass kicked... After awhile I decided that following the rules was easier than getting my ass kicked... Possibly a general lack of respect for authority has something to do with today's problems..

  8. Well Gunner is going great and is definitely going to be a big dog. He just turned 5 months old this week. All my buddies said he should have been named "tank" because he's so big. He should work out well retrieving large Canada Geese from our fields this upcoming season. Here's a pic of him with a wet coat after making a water retrieve this week. valoroutdoors.com

  11. we just picked up our new black lab almost 3 weeks ago now. He has big shoes to fill after our golden made it to 15, but passed in August. That dog was amazing, wouldn't chase out of the yard and you could walk him off a leash, never had a single obedience class. As for Colt (sweet name I know) things are slowly being destroyed around the house.

  12. After playing soccer on the travel team for so many years it comes to an end. Her team the Long Island Slammers won the state cup this weekend against the Albany Alley cats. Second year in a row. I'm happy for the girls moving forward in college and soccer. My daughter is concentrating on her studies at West Point.

  15. Be careful as you learn. Maybe watch a few YouTube videos on felling trees. One bad cut can ruin your day. A set of chaps is not a bad idea either.

  17. Hmm... I might be a fool, but at least I'll stand by my convictions. Oh, I have a clue, and you're right, you won't be one of those hauled off, because you just showed your hand. You will hide things, so you won't have to stand up for anything, which to me is kneeling before the oppressors, just in a different way. I'm not laughing either, not one bit. I don't find anything amusing about anything you post, and now I certainly wouldn't find your hypocrisy funny.

  20. I bought my self a battery operated one so I didn't have to wait for help. I have never use one at all. It's easier than I thought. The chain becomes loose and I have to tighten it and that is annoying. Not sure if that is normal. I will be cutting a pine tree down when I have the guts. Lol

  22. The guy who taught me (and certified me in Game of Logging 1&2) told me about the feathering thing. Yes to watching the tree. But at that point you should be at a safe distance 45 degrees from where the tree is expected to land. Paula, you may want to get someone to look at it - electric company road crews are great for this - and save your saw for the bucking and limbing. Even so, be careful as as downed tree can react in all kinds of unexpected ways when you release tension.

  23. I wonder if a member here could drop that tree for Paula? If I was closer I’d do it in a heartbeat……

  24. All good advice. Never heard about trigger on or off ? Having 1000s of hrs with a chainsaw in hand.. I would add that no matter how easy it seems, never loose respect for the saw . The worst cuts I've ever seen were from a saw. Not mine luckily(knock on wood), I've only cut my knuckles a lot when sharpening. Lol. When falling a tree, remember to never take your eyes off of it. All the way to the ground . It isn't uncommon for the tree to hit the ground and bounce funny or loose a branch that comes straight down, etc...

  25. Root trapper bags are a plastic type material on the outside and a coarse fabric on the inside that prevents the roots from J hooking and winding around the outside of the container - as I'm sure you've seen in many plants grown in plastic pots. As far as the Walmart chestnuts, I started with 6 of those 3 years ago and 3 of them died the 1st year, After that I decided to grow my own. I've since planted 40 -50 and only lost a handful and the ones I started from seed have caught up to the Walmart trees in growth. I like my results better.

  26. i was super happy with the 10" electric I bought. It was surprisingly adapt at smaller jobs. It's super light, on demand start and no gas stink which makes it great for light jobs and mid-season deer stand stuff. My dad liked it so much he went out and bought a 12 or 14 but the 40v vs the 20v I have. He said it's just as good as his gas, but obviously a little heavier than mine. All chains, gas or electric will stretch a little when new and also as they warm up. It's a hot topic, but I believe there should be a little slack when you tug on the chain when cold. I know others feel differently.

  27. This may sound stupid but make sure you are using bar & chain oil of some sort. Only reason I point this out is that my brother-in-law, a newbie to chainsaws at the time, complained to me that the chain on his gas powered chainsaw was always getting loose and he asked me to take a look at it. Turns out that he never used bar and chain oil causing the chain to heat up and stretch. Once he started using the bar and chain oil, things go WAY better.

  28. The tighnee should have some kind of lock. Chainsaws are easy till accident happens... friend was helping me fell trees and he had one bounce up and back hittìng hi s shoulder and knocking him over.. tore tendons in shoulder and knee. Stiĺl doing rehab..lucky didnt strike him in head and kill him.. ot was only a small tree about 4 inches in diameter..... wear protective equipment ! Dropping trees is a skill best left to others if you dont have experiance, dead trees are the most dangerous.. as are leaners. Special cuts and wedges may be needed to drop safely. You tube is informative but every tree is different. And its not alway as easy as it looks as profesionals are showing you on a couple of minute video.

  32. I was born in 1973.....My Mom was home until my brother and i were old enough to get off the bus and come home for a few hours by ourselves and then she went back to teaching. We had dinner at the table every night. Going out to dinner, even McDonalds was a treat. So was ordering Pizza....Now we do that all the time....In the summer i was gone with the neighborhood kids from the second I got up until it was time for dinner. Playing in the woods, Army, toy guns etc....Sometimes I could go back out after dinner.... The biggest change IMO is the complete lack of respect for anyone with authority.....From parents, teachers, police etc. I knew if i got in trouble in school my punishment at home was going to be way worse than anything the school was going to do to me...I never dealt with the police.....I loved but feared and respected my parents.....Still do today...the fear is different, just don't want to let them down... If i get pulled over, i deserved it and the LEO will never get anything from me other than yes sir, no sir.... I have no idea what has caused this lack of respect for parents, elders, teachers, law enforcement etc, or how to fix it but there isn't a bigger problem IMO...

  36. Growing up with a single mom with seven kids, we had to learn self reliance at an early age. These days, too many rely on someone else. Like the government, family members, or any option they can find that's available. We were told to "figure it out" on our own. That was the best thing I learned growing up. When times got bad, I "figured" something out to get us through. Lots of times we may not have had extra money. But we had what we needed. "Figuring it out" seems to be a dying art now days for too many.

  38. We had rules, summer time tv was not allowed on and we had to be outside by 9am. We could come back for lunch but we had to go back outside and we better not have been late for dinner. We got our ass beat for everything that we did wrong. I had my own apartment at 16 because I got sick of getting my ass beat. We had rules growing up and got in trouble if we stepped out of line but our parents were always there to stick up for us if need be, and that included School and or neighbor bullies

  39. Yes and no good places and good bosses retain employees. Where I work we just retired a guy with 50 years of service . Most of the guys I work with have 10 to 15 years some with as much as 30 to 40 . I have 24. I have had 14 department heads in 20 years. Management have the attitude that if I can't be plant manager in 3 years I'm going some place else. Nothing invested nothing lost . People don't leave bad jobs they leave bad bosses. Current boss is late 30's he has driven alot of good people out that were in their 50s . Wish he would move on so we can save some good people. We know his time is limited ... just hope he leaves soon . If you invest in your people you invest in your future. I guess it depends on where you are at on the food chain.

  40. To your parents, you learning to do the laundry was an affirmation that you could be trusted to do something and that they could teach you to do other things that required higher thinking and skill levels. Kids now a days want to start everything at the top tier pay scale, without doing the ground work in the trenches to get there. Maybe parents should let their kids be kids first, before they're sent to code school and become boring pasty skin nerds that get beat up by girl scouts ?

  43. Here's the latest update on Gunner. Did some more training with him in the marsh and pond and he is coming along very well. Today I introduced him to some larger river water where he had to make some longer retrieves and he made me proud again. He is 4 months old now and just started swimming 2 weeks ago. valoroutdoors.com
