  1. A little late to this topic, but have been busy with hunting season and with the holidays and a vacation last week so was away from the computer. Picked a spot to sit on 10/30 that was across a ravine from where I wanted to sit opening day of gun season and had built a ground blind. Wanted to use this just for a little scouting over looking some thick brush with quite a few runs running through it that crosses the ravine in a few spots. Got down to camp kind of early on Friday, relaxed for a bit and headed for the woods a little after 2. Found a decent tree for my climber, about 20 yards up the hill from an opening in the brush below and got set up. Had been in the tree about 30 minutes when i heard a crashing noise behind me. I turned around a saw this guy heading down the hill after he had just jumped into the woods after crossing the road behind me. I was in the woods about 40 yards that cuts down the middle of the hill I was hunting. After watching him rub a tree for a few seconds and make a small scrape under another tree to my right he started walking down the hill and cut right through the opening in the brush below. He stopped a little short of where I was hoping to have him stop but I couldn't wait. I drew back and let the arrow fly at 20 yds. Shot was a little high but he rolled right over and crashed. Tried getting up after a couple minutes later but he ended up dropping. I lost him in the brush after that so I waited for an hour and then headed back to camp to get my buddy. Found him about 20 - 25 yds down the hill in the brush from where I had originally shot him. My biggest bow buck to date. Just thinking about this is making wish bow season started next week.

  3. I voted for Trump twice. And I'm not happy with the way the election went down either. But his own ego, and the failure to know when to shut the hell up, has hurt whatever good he did do. And tarnished whatever presidential legacy he had left, by 'almost' encouraging the shameful display that happened today, at the US Capital building. We are not Antifa! Or any of these other leftist terrorists cry babies! So let's not act like them! We need to lead by example, to rebuild the Republican Party. Trump came in and was a refreshing change. He's leaving us, the ones who supported him, with a bad taste in our mouths. Always.......America First!

  4. Cops hands are tied , along with always judged being wrong , proactive police work is a thing of the past . Take a report afterwards ,get your 20 and retire to Florida, without being sued is today’s goal . My city, days of riots , 90 buildings damaged or burned , multiple cop cars burned , cops pelted with frozen water bottles, rocks , piss , they had to stand down and take it ,when they should have been giving wood shampoos . This is what progressives want now they have it , enjoy .

  5. Specious comparisons ? That's political talk for don't bring up the evil past deeds of my party, while I'm condemning your party for doing the same thing. We've been witnessing these vile actions for almost two years now and not one peep about it, just Bail reform, defunding the Police and funerals. I'm still waiting for the left to condemn the terrorist actions of ANTIF or BLM, but since both groups are the terrorist wings of the left, I won't hold my breath. Your party has lost control of it's dogs and it's going to be fun watching them chew on their masters for awhile.

  6. I went on a diy bow hunt this year in South western Montana. It was awsome to say the least. You can do it on a shoe string budget or go full send on a outfitter. You will pay though if you do the outfitter and guide. My biggest expense was airfare. You can go to Africa cheaper than some of the outfitters out west. If you have any specific questions let me know. I am no expert but I can let you know what worked for me and what didn't.

  7. Yeah...Just like the BLM and Antifah terrorists that burned down half the country..I don't remember many of them being mowed down although many of them justly deserved it...... Extremists , either right or left wing are dangerous, and lawless behavior should not be tolerated, whether it comes from these right wing idiots or the leftist BLM and Antifah criminals who were allowed to run rampant in several large cities over the last few months.. I'm glad I am getting old and won't have to tolerate this insanity much longer.....

  9. My brother traps but some of our friends group have not taken the course. My brother reached out to [email protected] regarding potential course offerings and below is the response he received for anyone that may be interested. Good afternoon, In order for New York State to accept a hunter, bowhunter, or trapper education certificate, it must come from a course that meets the minimum standards set forth by the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA). Unlike the hunter and bowhunter education courses, there is no pre-existing online trapper education course that meets this standard. This means that NYS will not accept any trapper education certificate earned online at this time. We are in the process of creating our own NYS online trapper education course, but this is proving to be a lengthy process and it will not be finished in time for this year’s (2020-2021 license year) trapping seasons. However, it will be ready prior to next year’s (2021-2022 license year) trapping seasons. We are currently offering a mail-in home study trapper education course for NY residents. For this course, we mail you the reading materials, worksheets, and final exam. You provide postage and mail the completed portions back to us. If you pass the worksheets and final exam with an 80% or higher, we will mail you your certificate. There is no need to go to an in-person course, but you are welcome to if you decide that you would like the hands on instruction; in that case you can show your certificate in place of the required homework. Please note that depending on the volume of home study course participation, it may take up to 2-4 weeks for your certificate to be mailed after your packet has been received. Additionally, if the governor mandates that our offices must close again, we will not be able to grade returned packets until we reopen. If you are interested in this option, please provide your full name, mailing address, and county.

  13. Can't sugar coat this one. Can't explain it away. Can't rail against what happened with BLM and supporting police and denouncing violence and destruction and support this. Can't, won't. The main argument I've had with my liberal friends is that BLM would have all been shot and killed. Ummm they took over whole city blocks and weren't shot and killed by police, whereas they did shoot a white woman yesterday. Typical double standard race baiting divide from the other side too.

  15. My point is not political or to blame any political figure rep or dem, for present or past riots it does amaze me how adults feel that violent riots is the answer,,,,,, but since you brought up politics ,,,i feel that yes trump has some of the blame on his shoulders for today just like some dem mayors and other politicians handcuffed the police and let there cities get destroyed by BLM and Antifia

  16. The cops were told to stand down , like they were told to do for months and this is the culmination of what happens when you let the patients run the psych ward. The chickens have come home to roost and they picked the capitol building to roost in. While the rest of the country had to deal with covid, crime , rioting, burning , looting and destruction, the Elite were snug in their hollowed halls surrounded by Armed security. They have no one to blame but themselves for what happened.

  17. I would say lack of arrests is purely a numbers issues say it takes two or three cops to arrest one violent suspect, and when your already outnumbered its just not possible it appeared to me with the number of cops there was no way they could control the scene.... hopefully arrest will come from people identified via video, just amazing to me be it BLM ANTIFIA or whatever this group was today think any violent riot is the answer ,,, My support goes out to the police caught in the middle

  18. 40! And you think you are done? I've been in camp where a 79 year old took his first game animal with a borrowed rifle. Never shot anything other then a service rifle almost 60 years prior and whistled a text book 120 yd shot with my 375 hh. And 2 72 year olds filling out a lifes dream hunting together in the arctic. Plenty ways to get going on a hunt somewhere but it requires some work to make an opportunity. Gone on a pile of hunts, nothing dropped into my lap, but was able to take advantage of some terrific deals by keeping after it and jumping when I knew it was to good to pass up. I turned someone on to a land owner elk tag in nm that came up with a few weeks notice a few years ago. Took a very nice animal, ranch hands even helped with field prep and hanging. $1200 on 14000 private acres, topo maps, cabin with running water for a week. I was in africa and forwarded an email or I would have gone myself. Get after it, never too late.

  19. My wife and I are watching the resumption of the Congressional proceedings. I think a lot of these Senators have realized that they have played a dangerous game, and today it came to a head. I really hope that the silver lining to this is that both parties give up the outrage and move towards collegiality.

  20. Plus another ten.....In prep for my Alaska hunts I carried a packframe loaded with firewood several miles several times per weeks for several months....I hadn't smoked in years and was in the best physical condition of my life....Packing out moose and caribou still damn near killed me... In The Rockies the terrain was steeper and more severe, but we had the advantage of being able in most cases to hire locals to pack out the game on horseback....Last elk hunt I made was over 15 years ago, and at the time it cost us $300 to get an elk packed out...Money well spent if you kill him 3 or 4 miles from the trailhead...It may cost twice that much today, but it would still be worth it unless you had 4 or 5 guys that are built like Moog...<<SMILE>>....

  21. This times 10 . My buddy lives on the bay ,70 stairs to the water , he did that ten times, then went behind his house and climbed up and down the bank . About an hour everyday for months . He was about six foot maybe 230, he dropped 30 pounds in preparation for the hunt as well . He was winded every day , the hunt just wiped him out . Out of shape and not a good shot , are the two biggest downfalls .

  26. So, here's a quick follow up from the powers-that-be at Strong (and associated health care systems). No one who has received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine here has developed a reaction severe enough to warrant admission to the ICU. I can't speak to other heath care systems, but we are in the tens of thousands of doses administered. If anyone is interested, the CDC maintains a searchable web-based platform for reporting adverse reactions, which is readily accessible from their COVID portal. Information is updated weekly, and is reported for all types of vaccinations, not just the COVID-19 vaccines. Stay safe, stay sane, and get outdoors!

  27. The protest in DC yesterday was all about the 2020 election. Not Trump. People believe leftists stole it and are planning to shove leftism, socialism, communism and gun control down our throats after a successful political coup. Mark my word, when they try to pass laws to do any of the above, they will see more of what occurred yesterday. The American people are waking up to what is happening and now realize that working within the system if futile, because the system is corrupt. What we saw yesterday was created by the government. Fours years of lawlessness has shown the people the law is no longer being enforced. The government has played stupid games and is now getting it's stupid prize. Yesterday was nothing compared to what 2021 will bring. I sure as hell don't want to see it, but I also don't want my grandkids living on their knees under Communism. If there must be a fight, let it be now, so my grandkids can live free!

  28. You are lumping the NYPD line officers in with the NYPD's politically appointed administration. The Police union and line officers do not agree with NY's anti-gun positions, especially when they let felons who commit gun crimes out of jail.

  29. The protesters, rioters or what ever you’d like to cal them were let in by law enforcement. The one person shot was shot by law enforcement in a reported negligent discharge. This will get worse. There are two main groups in America and they’re heading in opposite directions. One side wants to follow the constitution, has all the guns and is backed by the military and police. The other has a lot of promises and feel good phrases. This will get way worse before it gets better! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  30. And Trump was elected because of Obama and his policies. The problem with a pendulum is you can't be surprised when you push it so far one way that it swings back the opposite way equally far. I long for the day when it is just hanging stagnant in the middle.

  32. Many times law enforcement personnel are "dammed if they do" and "dammed if they don't". So I guess law enforcement personnel error on the side of caution to be "dammed if they don't". Those politicians and Americans who are anti-police and who are also supportive of organizations whose members chant "WHAT DO WE WANT? DEAD COPS' or 'WE WANT PIGS IN A BLANKET", again I guess law enforcement personnel error on the side of caution to be "dammed if they don't". The majority of protestors acted in a civil manner and there were many of them present. I wonder if this is just the tip of the ice berg? If President-elect Biden is intelligent, his first order of business would be designing a voter system that is not corruptible. Mandatory voter identification cards and finger printing of anyone who wants to vote shall be the law. Totally traceable mail in ballots that require a legible thumb print would be provided to those with valid reasons for not appearing at polling locations.

Two, I’m not much of a conspiracy guy, but those inside don’t look like most of those outside at the protest . Hopefully with enough arrests we can see if they’re Trump supporters or simply agent provocateurs . Pics below . Three UPS just dropped off another 1000 plus rounds at the front door .

  35. while its unlikely here in the east to call birds in from a mile away because of our terrain it is certainly possible to have a bird respond to a call from a great distance. their hearing is probably the best of any game animal we hunt as well as their ability to pinpoint where the sounds are coming from as has already been stated. nothing beats boots on the ground scouting, but we play the cards we are dealt so we use the tools available. there are good hunting apps available and certainly some great satellite imagery to do some online scouting. again it doesn't replace boots on the ground it can certainly guide you towards likely locations to start your scouting/hunting trip, as well as cut out areas that are not as likely to hold birds. Once you are up there and scouting/hunting pay attention to detail, mark where you hear birds and if they continue to gobble once off roost where they go or at the very least what direction they go once down. while here in NY the days hunt ends at noon, depending on when in may you are there that can give you upwards of 7-8 hours of scouting time. If possible have a chat with the rural mail carrier, ups driver, fed ex driver, and even the local encon officer or forest ranger. Sometimes you can gather priceless intel from these folks. as far as calls go they all can and will work on any given day, confidence in your calling ability and the calls you are using is priceless. Production calls are more than capable of calling in birds as proven thousands of times every season. Custom calls are more than capable of calling in birds and is also proven thousands of times every season. So with that being said the exact opposite can be said on both calls as well, some production calls sound horrible, some "custom" calls also sound crappy because the callmaker is in it for the money and doesn't have the ear for turkey talk. I would do my homework on a custom call and when compared to the cost of some of the mass produced calls your really not into the call for much more $ unless you are getting into the higher end specialty calls like a longbox but you are paying for a call made for YOU and likely 1 on1 customer service from the call maker, you will NOT get that from lynch, hs strut, penns woods and most any of the other mass producers of calls you are stuck with the call no matter how it sounds. any type of call can bring in a gobbler on the right day, some days they wont hit the longbox but will lite up when i hit the crystal or diaphragm. having multiple calls available can save a hunt, with pot calls having multiple strikers that will run on a particular pot call can give you multiple turkey vocal variations. no matter what call you choose to use be confident in your ability to do different calls to the point where running the call is just second nature, confidence in all aspects of the hunt will be beneficial to putting tags legs. so you are now in the area your hunting, you have done your scouting and have heard a bird, now is when your next decisions can be key to whether that bird will commit all the way to the gun barrel. know where natural barriers are ( streams, super steep terrain etc. ) while the right bird at the right time will think nothing of flying across a 10 yard wide creek or advancing through brush so thick you couldn't crawl through it I certainly wouldn't set up to make that happen because the same gobbler the next day can be hammering your every call making a beeline to you and then all of a sudden hang up because he wont step over a 4" log laying across the logging road.... otherwise known as a turkey being a turkey. so when you get your first response from a bird that is what you feel is a workable from here distance your first step should be a rapid assessment of your location, is it an area the bird would or should feel comfortable coming into? can you set up where the the bird when first visible will be on the outer fringe of your killing range. what I mean is you want to try and have the bird out of sight until he is close enough to kill so he doesn't have time to sort it all out, sometimes that is not possible so we play the hand we are dealt and sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't. this can be accomplished by using terrain to your advantage or by setting up back off the field edge -vs- right on the field edge. Pretty much this aspect of the hunt goes to your gut/hunch/experience feelings, again sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't most important thing to do is learn from the results. sorry to be long winded, hope at least something was found to be useful. let us know how it turns out.

  36. Years ago I took a friend of mine and his son on their first Coon hunt. We were hunting corn fields that bordered big woods, things were going along good as we made a couple of trees and had taken two Coon on the edge of the woods. About 11 pm my two English Coonhounds then struck another track inside the woods and headed in deep. They got back in so far we could not hear them anymore on the trail so I had to get out my radio telemetry antenna and receiver to locate the hounds who were wearing transmitter collars. I got a signal and checking my compass they were headed directly north so north we headed. Things started looking not so good when we hit the edge of a big swamp about a mile back, still could not hear the dogs so I took another reading with my receiver and could still get a signal directly north. Now we had to work our way around bogs, streams and potholes of water which slowed things down dramatically and on top of that the temp had dropped into the teens so it was getting cold. Finally after slogging through and around that miserable swamp we could hear the dogs treeing. It takes another half hour to get to them and it is 1 AM and they are smack in the middle of a small pond on an island with an old bare snag of a tree with a big old coon sitting up in the top. Things kept going downhill from there, I let my friend do the shooting while I spotted the coon with my light. At the shot the coon flew out of the tree into the water with my old female hound going in after it. In the water coons can be dangerous to dogs as they will get on their heads causing them to drown and from what I could see that was exactly what was going on in this pitched battle. Without hesitation I kicked off my boots and coat and in I went to my dog with my friend's son following. The water got to be about chest deep and man talk about cold! So I get to my dog and pull her and the coon back on to the island where her and her daughter took care of business, I put the finishing touches on with good heavy club. Turns out the coon was hit in the front leg so that is why it had a lot of fight left in it. So now we wade back through the pond to dry land and things continue to go downhill, the kid's light goes dead from water intrusion, he is so cold hit teeth are chattering and I now notice my light was getting dim which was brand new and being used for the first time. I told my buddy there is no way I am going back through that swamp on this black night with only one light working at 2 in the morning especially with me and the kid sopping wet and freezing our asses off. Made the decision to stay put, build a fire and make our way through the swamp out at first light when we could see. Got out the old Zippo windproof lighter and picked up some dry fire starter starter and had a good roaring bonfire going in short order. Through the years I have made a small fire many times in the middle of the woods coon hunting listening to my dogs and all the other creepy sounds so that was the easy part. Took off all my clothes and hung them over the fire to dry and put back on my Carhart coon hunter's coat and got close to the fire to keep warm. We made the kid a bed of dry balsam branches and he fell asleep next to the fire while me and his dad told sat there and told tall tales until daylight. As soon as we could see to walk got dressed into my smoky smelling dry clothes, took a reading with my compass and headed out, in a couple of hours we came out of the woods right where the truck was parked. Later found out my brand new Cajun Coon hunting light had a shorted wire on it's charger and never charged up the battery to full. Below is my old girl "Specky" that was hunted in the above, one of the top two or three hunting dogs I have ever seen and had the pleasure to hunt behind. The simple point of this tale is to make sure you have the skill to make a fire when hitting the timber. Al

At around 8:10am...I heard a crunch in the snow and looked to my left..and there was a small doe hobbling with no use of her front right leg....i couldn't see any blood or an injury....but my heart told me to harvest her as the coyotes would have a field day with her....so I did Sometimes as stewards we need to make the right decisions and I believe this was a good choice....theres always tomorrow...last day northern tier Good luck boys Sent from my SM-G892A using Tapatalk

  42. I did an elk/mule deer rifle season hunt, in a north west CO OTC tag area, when I was in my mid 30's. As others have mentioned already, do it when you are able. It only took me a day or so to get acclimated to the high altitude and thin air. I went with 3 older friends who had gone 3 or 4 times before. One of them had a brother in law who lived out there, and he was our "guide" We drove out there from WNY in a truck, taking turns driving, and hunted for a week. We did not see any shooter elk (it was too warm for many to come down out of the dark timber, and the bulls needed 3 points on a side), but we did bring back 3 mule deer. I am glad I went when I was young (I am 56 now), but I would not do it again, unless it cost me less than $ 1000 including tags, transportation, food, and lodging. Also, that would be elk only. They taste as good as NY whitetail. My friends gave me quite a bit from previous years hunts. I would need to be paid to do another mule deer hunt in that area. They don't taste so great. The best thing for me about that hunt, was that the Rockies gave me a real appreciation for the Adirondacks, and mule deer gave me a real appreciation for whitetails. Had I not gone west while I was young, I might take that for granted. High desert dont much for me, as far as scenery. The ADK's are way prettier to me. If you do go with an outfitter, make sure to research them. Some of my friends (who are my age) booked a horseback trip with one a coule years ago and they said that "it was a real shit-show". They spent lots of money and didn't bring back any meat.
