  5. Twenty minutes into my first bow hunt in twenty years a nice basket racked 7-8 point gave me a chip shot. The hit looked a bit high, so I’ll give him a while. That got the blood pumping!

  7. Looking like our trip will be cut short do to weather. Calling for severe storms here all day tomorrow. So we picked up camp tonight just in case we need to get out of here in a hurry tomorrow. No deer were taken but plenty of laughs and lessons learned. We are planning on coming back down during their opening day of rifle and already talking about next year and what we can do different.

  11. Not much rain yet this morning, but there is 1.73 inches predicted for today. I hung out at the campfire last night and did not get my pop up blind up until first light this morning. I left that in a good spot, close to camp, and headed out to some old lean-two’s in a good spot about a mile away. This is the spot where I have seen the most deer activity over the last 8 years up here. Ordinarily, I don’t hit it in the first hunt but I figured all that rain would wash away any of my scent. I am wearing my full rain gear and can back into a lean-two if the rain gets too intense. I have not seen any deer sign yet but I did hear some coyotes howling last night. My father in law put up an axe throwing target and I was able to get my edc knife to stick close to the bull last night on my 10th attempt.

  12. Got home early today and hung out around the house. Talked to mama and she gave me the green light to hunt tomorrow morning since we cut or trip short. Not sure where I'll go but I'll be out somewhere. Very blessed to have the wife I have. She also told me to stop chasing horns and fill her freezer. Lol she has a point she tends to bring me back in and remind me why I hunt sometimes.

  14. We’re in Ohio as of five min ago. Going to set a few stands in the rainfest. Last two hours are due to be no rain but still a touch windy. Cold front dropped temp 10 degrees on truck in last five miles. Hoping we mail back side of front here and then tomorrow back in NY.

  20. Ya know, that’s a thing here, cross boarding ,inside trading . People pick someone then they tell, them to change it as they’re not hunting that week , or a guy knows when someone is going to take vacation etc . id like to see all picking done prior to the season . Carry on .

  21. 10/15: quick hunt before work in 3S was awesome this morning. 655am a Long nose doe came in. She Under 5 yards for a full 10min. I almost shot her when it was 7am because it was lone deer and figured buck was then finally light enough to see no rack. I took video but can’t post so here’s a screen shot. I watched her drift away and at 725am she joined up with another full size doe and a fawn. The 2 does and Fawns finally drifted out of sight. At 745am I almost got a shot at a great buck. He came in straight on and at one point was only 20yds but in heavy stuff. His rack was dark chocolate and very long tines. I couldn’t see brows so he was huge 6 or nice 8. But the tines were really long. I was at full draw but just didn’t have an opening and didn’t want to force it. He slowly drifted away to 50yds and then out of sight. I checked cam before leaving and he’s been on it several days recently. Including yesterday morning following a smaller buck. Too bad he didn’t come that way like yesterday or id have had a an easy 25yd shot in the open. I’m sick to my stomach but also very exciting. A really cool buck maybe the darkest rack I’ve seen in NY. Also a pic of the heavy brush he came through and the doe I passed up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  22. Pretty short and sweet story. Hunted Sunday PM with my son and we had an amazing sit. Saw piles of deer and even had some big bucks in the field. Unfortunately none came within bow range ( although my son said I should shoot them ) Got home and happen to check my cam and saw a giant bodied deer in a different field than the one we had sat in. I immediately wanted a closer look. I loved the fact he was a loaner away from all the herd we saw. Thankfully, the wind for that stand was perfect Monday so I hit it for an afternoon sit. The rest is history. He came out textbook the way he did the night before and I had a 17yrd shot. I waited in the stand for my dad and son to show up, and my son made short work of the track job. What an experiance to have 3 generations involved in! Thankful to punch a tag so early and be able to get some stuff done before gun season. According to the PA chest girth chart this buck dressed at 180# which was verified by an actual scale. Sent from my SM-G998U using Tapatalk

  27. It might fire, but I would be a little concerned with corrosion. I would pull the breech plug and push it out, reassemble, then spray in some foaming bore cleaner into the end of the muzzle and let it soak for a half hour or more. Then remove the breach plug again and run a bore snake though the barrel. Make sure the hole is open thru the breech plug while it is out (use a small drill if you need to), reassemble and you should be good to go.

  30. Solid guess @squirrelwhisperer. I saw one fat squirrel this a.m.,no deer. I may try to go out before the storms get here, supposedly late afternoon accompanied by a severe temp drop.

  31. Ill never be able to afford a moose hunt nor do I want to pay and take my chances on applying for a out of state tags year after year . So I figured why not buy a shed, I built the base out of black walnut , stained it and got it hung up on the wall . I think it looks good keeping my bucks company.. oh and we made sure we left room for more deer antlers too .

  33. I'd say it's a good morning to be a duck, but it's not at all, at least in the western zone. I love the smell of powder burning and ducks smacking the water. Loading up the truck now... Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  38. My Man!! Too many just wing shots, hoping for the best. I've seen it all while tracking for Deer Search. Enough can go wrong on a good shot opportunity, much less risking a poor one. If it ain't right, I ain't shooting. Would rather let them walk, than take an iffy shot ! Sometimes, just minutes, or seconds later, the deer will offer a much better shot? If not, perhaps another day. As hunters and sportsmen, we owe it to the game we hunt. To know our own limitations, and make that shot the best that we possibly can.
