  2. It’s the time of year that I start thinking about what my goals are for this years hunting season. The past year has blessed me with a new baby girl, a new energy for youth development work after Covid, and just an overall desire to enjoy all of the great things that I have available in my life. So, here’s what I hope to accomplish in the 2022 hunting season… 1. I am taking one of my 4-H members hunting for the first time next month. He just got his first hunting license, and we are meeting next week to settle on a gun and learn some outdoor skills. This year I’m going to take him squirrel hunting, and I am confident I can get him on a few bushy tails next month. Then, I hope to have him come along with me on a few deer hunts in November. I’ll have him help me with cameras, scouting and placing a ground blind. 2. I was gifted an old Winchester Model 12 dating to 1913 (4 digit serial). I got it cleaned up as well as I can, and finally found some 2 1/2” 20 gauge shells online, which arrived earlier this week. I would like to kill a mess of squirrels with this old gun this season. 3. I would like to expand my squirrel cooking experience. Growing up, we only fried the young squirrels and used the old ones for chowder. I’ve been looking at other recipes, and would like to expand my menu. 4. I would like to finally kill a deer with a muzzleloader. I’ve bagged deer with every other legal tool, but have never taken one with a muzzleloader. My T/C New Englander is going to get a good amount of time in the field this November. 5. Take a deer with a bow and a gun. It’s been years since I’ve had a multi-deer year (my highest was 11 in one season back in Illinois). We’ve been tearing through last years harvest, and I’d like to have 2 in the freezer this year. I’m going to do my best to take one during archery, and one during gun season. I think that covers what I would really like to accomplish this year. Nothing too lofty, and regardless of what happens, I’ll just be happy to get some time in the outdoors and share that experience with the next generation. What are you goals for 2022?

  9. Haven't fished there in many years. Had good luck behind the bowling alley in town (not sure if it's even there any more or if you can access the river from there). Used an 8' ugly stick and a good reel like a diawa bg, spooled with trilene XT in 14# or 17# test in green. As stated earlier, you need to be bouncing near the bottom. I think the regs were 2' between the weight and your hook. I used a #2 salmon egg hook with a piece of pink or orange sponge covering the hook. A pink or orange curly tail grub as mentioned earlier will also work. Here's something that will save you a lot of time and rigs - tie your main line to a good barrel swivel and leave about a 5" tag end or so hanging from your knot. From the other side of your barrel swivel tie your leader that's attached to the hook. Now, remember the 5" tag end - that's where you will crimp your split shot. Get some good size split shot and use enough 1,or2 or even 4 if necessary to get you ticking the bottom. Cast upstream and toward the middle of the river and take up the slack as your rig tumbles toward you in the current. You will get hung up from time to time, however, no big deal as you can either pull free or lose just your split shot. This is a technique that was always successful for me. Hopefully, I explained it ok. Good luck and have fun - there's nothing more exciting than fighting a salmon in the current.

  12. If you have a boat, I'd highly recommend going into the estuary and casting crankbaits for salmon. It's much more fun getting them to crush a thunderstick than snagging them in the river surrounded by 100 people. You won't "hook up" as many times as in the river, but you're looking for the aggressive fish that snap at baits. If you've ever pike/muskie fished then imagine a fish 3 times the size smashing a plug. I started out in the river but haven't fished it in 3 years now, the people and the snagging aren't fun to me. I'll resume the river fishing in November when the steelhead are in and the people are out. If you want specifics on where/what to use let me know. Sent from my moto g fast using Tapatalk

  20. Save the Date of September 24th!!!!! and don't miss out on the September 1st early bird bonus gift. I hope this email finds you all well. It's been over 2 years since we've been able to host our banquet but we are anxious to get back to the good work that we have done in the past and that requires some fundraising to support the branch and national programs. We've come up with an idea that should provide a more open air environment and will be a little less formal than our normal banquet. We are also trying something new.....an entry ticket that not only gets you a meal and a membership but also gets you in on a 12 gun raffle. Besides the entry raffle that will draw a gun every 10 minutes for the duration of the game (no need to be present to win), we will also be doing some of our normal games. We are anticipating having our normal Gun Board, 50/50, some side games and a silent auction with some great NDA products. We are hoping this will be very popular and we know we can count on you in supporting our efforts. See the attached flyer for more details and drawing times. Tickets are on sale now through the NDA portal. www.deerassociation.com/roc Tables are limited so if you want to do some leg work and get 8 folks together you can get a huge discount. All-inclusive Ticket Options: (doesn’t include side raffles, 50/50, Silent Auction or Surprises) $100.00 One Event Entry, One Chicken BBQ, Two Drink Tickets, One Annual NDA Membership,One Entry in the 12 Gun Raffle, 1 gun drawn every 10 minutes from 1:10 till 3:00 $250.00 One Event Entry, One Chicken BBQ, Three Drink Tickets, One Annual NDA Membership, Three Entries in the 12 Gun Raffle, 1 gun drawn every 10 minutes from 1:10 till 3:00 $1,500.00 Captains Reserved Picnic Table with 8 - $250.00 Packages, a $2,000 VALUE!!!!! 21. Good day off. Got out to check the rifle to be sure it's still on. Gotta love one shot and done! Esp these days with the availability of ammo. But the 30/30 is good to go. Then went to the Amish store for some sausage spices. Then out to hunting land. Checked out plots and they are looking good. The one I planted 2 weeks ago at wayback is growing great in spots and nothing in others. So gonna seed a few spots there again. But even the ones I did just a week ago have popped. Good to see! Also got 3 stands cleared for shooting lanes and new straps on them. Clover in the trails also looks great from our frost seeding. Then shot the xbow and that is on and ready! Was planning tomorrow to put in our last little plot but the farmer cut it all and we have to wait for them to bail it now. So hopefully they do that today or tomorrow so we can get that in Sunday. Looks like 4 days of rain after and it would be perfect. Sent from my motorola edge 5G UW (2021) using Tapatalk

  22. It’s mostly about the meat for me. I would like to put (3) mature deer in our freezer this year. We used to go thru (4), but my wife and I will be empty nesters after Aug 26. I would be very thankful, if the first two were early antlerless gun-season does, killed between September 10 and September 18. Most years, I look for antlered bucks with at least (3) points on a side. It has been more than 10 years, since I “settled” for less. If I can manage even one of those early does, then I will be upping that to at least (4) points on a side. I would make an exception for a buck with less points, if I could clearly tell it was a 3.5 yr old or older (not sure if I have ever killed one older than that). Both of my deer hunting spots in the Southern zone, and my spot in the Northern zone, have current deer populations that are considerably above optimum. For that reason, combined with my enjoyment of deer hunting, I will not stop after killing those first (3). There are lots of folks out there who really appreciate any venison that I can give them. I have a next-door neighbor, who has more than a half dozen kids, and has been out of work almost a year, due to illness. They love venison. I will be hunting until all (7) of my tags are filled, or 1/2 hour past sunset on January 1, 2023, whichever comes first.

  25. I've tried and failed to make this in the past. Pending the kids football schedule I'll try again to make this with my old man. On a side note, you should always drag a deer with the hair not against the grain. A lot less friction that way. And yes I'm just poking fun, relax.

  26. We're hunting three states again this year. 2021 was our toughest in terms of encounters. We passed several 3.5 yo and the 4.5+ stayed just outside of bow range for me all year. My partner tied into a 4.5+ in MO but the deer survived with a brisket wound. Luckily I got one buck in MO and was happy with it despite it being the smallest rack I've taken in years on purpose (put down a 2.5 injured buck in 2020). By far our least productive season ever, despite having fun and having a material amount of mature buck encounters. So, I think we're looking to be more successful in short and again have fun. Second season on our Ohio ground so we know it well, and our Missouri ground is mostly set up w/stands already to use right away.

  27. It used to be mayhem when I went a bunch in the 90’s. Fights and people stealing fish off stringers and people dragging fish down the road. They were all near dead anyway so it was snagging mania with undercover DEP everywhere writing tickets. The bars at night are even better. I used to use a fake ID to get in my buddies and we would hooked up white trash milfs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  28. I used to like going down to the Oswego River, below the dam near the post office. I don't fish salmon because I don't appreciate them as table fare. But back then it was the wild west during the run. I think snagging was legal or tolerated. (If you know what a "Michigan Cricket" is then you are probably as old as me.) The fishermen were back to back, many from out of state. Any many of them were well lubricated. When a salmon was hooked there were crossed lines and lots of colorful language. I never saw any actual fights but it got close often. It really was entertaining, I always left in a good mood. These days it seems a lot tamer and I often see DEC on patrol when I stop by. No doubt this brings a lot of money into the communities along the lake. The fishermen/fisherwomen seem to be enjoying themselves.

  29. The Whitetail Institute “Tall Tine Tubers”, that I planted last Wednesday, look like they germinated pretty good. It was at least 3 year old seed, so I wasn’t sure how they would do. This plot is about it 1/2 acre and I seeded it at about half the recommended rate. It is on the end of a good looking 2 acre RR corn plot. I plan on planting an adjacent 2 acre wheat/clover plot after September 1. I have 50 lbs of wheat leftover from last year and a couple pounds of Whitetail Institute Imperial Whitetail clover, that should work good for that spot. I am going to set up a pop up blind, with a comfortable padded chair, in the middle of a small old clover plot, that is on the inside corner of the corn, TT tuber, and new wheat/clover plots. As long as the wind is from the NE, that should be a good spot. With that wind, I will need to drive the Durango to the west property line, and park on the north end, in order to avoid spooking the deer on the walk back to that blind. The tires it came with look like they have some decent tread, but I am going to put some chains on all four, as soon as it starts getting muddy or cold, so it will be good to go in all weather conditions. The drainage is very good along that route, because it is all right along the creek bank. I also think I will put my hitch reciever cargo carrier on the back, so I don’t mess up the carpet, if I need to haul out a deer carcass.

  30. My storage shipping container gets the little jerks. Multifront attack Bucket trap, sticky pads, old fashioned mouse traps, sticky pads AND poison. The newer stuff is junk. Good old Dcon worked good, but you cant find it any more. Traps catch the jerks in the process. Buckets work over a longer time, Dcon kicks off the mom and dad, and the local population. I have been known to settle down on the lawn chair with a pellet gun to zap the jerks when they show their heads, too.

  31. I've been fishing the salmon river for the las 13 years, so I've learned a thing or two up there. I may forget a thing or two, but you're more than welcome to pm me. End of sept is a good time to catch salmon. Some years the main run is later, but there will be fish in the river. First you'll want a good pair of waders with either felt bottoms or some type of screw in the boot. Last thing you want is to be swept down river while fishing. I suggest getting a breathable wader since the weather will probably be warmer. Id suggest one of you guys to buy a big net, but its not 100% necessary as you can beach or ask someone to net your fish. Bring a good set of sunglasses. I prefer polarized in order to see the fish resting and coming up river, but its more about protecting your eyes. You will get hit with random split shot from someones line if you fish there enough. I almost knocked a guy out when my split shot recoiled back after a fish popping off. Buy plenty of split shot and hooks. I use the tin split shot up there and prefer #2, but a lot of people hate them. You wont be able to buy lead split shot in NY. For hooks I used blackird hooks in #2, but mustad is a very popular choice to use up there too. I wouldn't go much bigger than #2 though. You'll want a 9ft rod or longer. If you fly fish, you'll want a 9wt (8 being the absolute minimum) I fished for years using a cabelas medium action noodle rod, and caught a ton of fish. Now I use a fly rod and would never go back. Not gear but learn how to tie a snell knot. It'll increase your hook up ratio big time. Any knot will do though. I also suggest you learn how to tie it standing with gear in your hands. Once you move, your spot is up for grabs and someone will take it. If you're respectful with a group of guys, they may allow you in the rotation of spots that guys will usually do. Bring a vest if you can. Not critical, but it'll help big time when you're tying out on the river. Bring a good stringer if you can in order to keep fish in the river. Use maxima chameleon line. Pretty much a standard up there and since its the same color as the water, its pretty good. I used 12 pounds for years with great success, but I use 15 now since switching to a fly rod. Learn how to bottom bounce. These fish wont be biting, so you're really trying to floss them. The steelhead will bite, but they will be far and few between when you'll be up there. If you're lucky, you'll hit a run of coho. I've never been able to, but all the videos tell me that I want to one day. Be careful how you lift, you don't want to be hit for snagging. For bait I use atlas mike eggs, but since the salmon wont be biting, there's nothing wrong with a bit of sponge. Get to the river early if you want to save a spot. Guys usually get there when its dark to capitalize on the first light run and to save a spot.

  33. Yes, it was fun times back in the day. Still good I hear. I would always go on a Wed or Thurs morning, never the weekend. Getting back to advice - as stated earlier by Rob, braid is a good option for your mainline as you can get more and stronger line on your spool and cast farther (20# braid is the diameter of say 5# mono). If you use 20# test braid, use a floro leader of less weight, say 12# or 14# because if you need to break off it will be easier. You will need to have the tag end for this set up be the leader side as the split shot will just slide too easy off the braid. If you get hung up,head back upstream in the direction of the hang up to pull loose. Know when to let up on using your rod to pull a snag free to prevent snapping it. Especially with braid, if you need to pull the line to break loose or break off, take a small piece of a wooden dowel to wrap the line around or it will slice right through your skin. Also with braid, be sure to take up the slack next to your reel onto the spool immediately after you cast and flip the bail to eliminate line twist and wind knots. You need to pay more attention when using braid. It was always an adventure. There used to be a lot of snagged up line in some places and sometimes it was a surprise to see a fish jump on the line you got snagged on. That's all I've got, you'll learn a lot by doing it and figure out what works best for you. Have fun.

  34. 2 is all I shoot But I have personal rules l follow. I go by weight on bucks not rack size. If I kill a buck in bow season then I use rack size to decide if I will shoot the second buck it has to be bigger. I like to hunt. As I've gotten older l've learned we have only a set amount of hunting seasons in us and I'm going to enjoy the one's I have left.

  37. Just be sure on the regs out there. A trip to Fat Nancy's tackle shop will get you setup. There used to be regs on the hook gap and how long your leader was from any weight etc. I used to be up on all that but I def am not these days. My favorite was a 2 or 3 inch curly tail grub on a red gamagatsu hook. I've had big browns come ripping to grab that while salmon fishing. Sent from my motorola edge 5G UW (2021) using Tapatalk

I will highly recommend using light fishing line because the Salmon up there get mess with and they get line shy. If you go to the Douglaston you have to pay , but you have a better chance of hooking a fresher Salmon. Good luck
