Why do you stay in NY? 

I have contemplated this for myself several times.  I dont have any kids - so no school issue/ties, I would think i can prob get a job elsewhere without too much problem.  So why do I stay.......I really hate winter more and more , the older i get and the Job i have requires me to fight it all day.  Why do I stay.......The state is not tax or 2nd ammendment friendly to say the least and there are many other states where it seems life would be easier.  So why do I stay........

I guess its because its what I know.  I have lived here all my life.  The roads i travel on are mine.  I have land to hunt that i know well, i have a job that i can get a lot of time off in the fall, i know that if I drop a worm harness in Oneida i am likely to get a walleye, and i dont care to be run off either from an at times unfriendly state due to taxes and regulation that i dont agree with.  Its always been home.  I do enjoy the springs/summers and fall. And like where i live most of the time.  

I do have to say the pull is getting stronger to leave the older i get. I am not a big fan of heat but winter makes a tougher life for all that have to deal with it.  Maybe if i could look outside and not have to go out in it everyday it wouldnt be so bad.  But gotta say its tough to remain a NYer, when so many things point to other states.  Tenessee and Kentucky and W Virginia have been batting their pretty eyes at me for a while now......hmmmm

Family !  If my wife and I went south for the winter - snowbirding - we would only see the Family for a week or two during the winter . They grow up way too fast and do not want to miss out on their lives !

Ive tried for years, wife wont leave. Doesnt want to to kids away from the grandparents...they can travel to us!

7 yrs until my wife retires at 55 with 32 yrs in the state, and we're south bound. Tennessee is on the top of the list. Can't come soon enough. Absolutely loath this state, and lived here all my life except for a 4 yr stint in Ohio in the mid '70's.

Because there are few tornados. No hurricanes or wildfires. The hunting season is long! Usually the 4 seasons are nice. And very few poisonous snakes or spiders! The landscape is nice away from the city's. Taxes suck. But I just they get u anywhere u go one way or another

Opposite here, wife would leave NYS tomorrow. I only stay as both our  kids are here, when they marry, I could see leaving .

My sisters son moved to Tennessee after college , he now has kids in high school. My sister sees those kids almost as much as the ones here. They go for a week or two at a time a few times a year . Compare that with a couple hour visit once or twice a week with the ones here .

Most of my wife’s friends have already moved away, and more of our friends are planning ,some already buying land .

we’re gone for the month of a Feb this year, and that’ll only increase as years go by, can’t see why older folks would stay here winter time . My folks had a ball in FLA for close the 30 winters .aways thought they should have stayed a bit longer and made FLA their residence.

Looking out the window at another 8 inches of fallen snow, I feel the pull to leave for warmer climate. South Carolina looks nice. I am scared to death about those pesky twisters and Hurricanes, but if I just build a comfortable concrete bunker.....Damn, it looks like a snow globe out there. Sonofabee...

I stay because my elderly parents won't move. They put up with me when I was younger, and I owe them the reciprocal loyalty. It's really that simple.

I lived in Georgia and came back, still question why. I have brothers in NC that ask me to move there, might be easier than trying to find a house here!

Full time, I'm done with this winter stuff, hunting sucks around here, I'm ready for a change, Snake, Pig, Hogs, Gator, and different Duck hunting sounds good to me.

My parents bought a place in Florida last year to stay during the winter ,they already regret moving there . I think most of the reason people leave is because of the grass is greener mentality ,they make up reasons for leaving the state to make up for their inability to ever be satisfied. My mom didn't like when I told her that.

I went to college in NY (Poughkeepsie), and owned land there for a number of years.

NY is one of the most beautiful states in the country...it has mountains, an ocean, 2 great lakes, and lots of farmland. If you catch the right weekend in October, the turning leaves & rolling hills make post-card quality pictures.

When I bought my camp, I really expected to retire there (Allegany County). But the reality of aging, mostly due to high taxes, a 5-month winter with lots of snow, and liberal politics in Albany, has changed my mind. I'm headed south when the time is right.

I have way too much family here to leave. Yes taxes suck but to be quite honest NY has for the most part been great to me. Love all the change in seasons, love to hunt in snow.  I love where i hunt, love the mountains and fields of CNY.  Did i say love too many times...lol..I took this pic. last week from the top side of my property, not many places where you can get views like that and at the same time can hear a pin drop. Someday that will be my everyday view but for now seeing it occasionally works just as good. Sorry but once again pics are sideways

I’ve had family members with the same reaction. First Florida is filling up fast, as is the Carolina’s. Don’t fall into the trap that Fla has low taxes and low cost of living. The state is becoming very blue, A socialist nearly win the governorship a few weeks ago, he proposed raising taxes 30%,. In 20 years Fla will be NY with palm trees.

All my family is here. I only have one aunt that moved to Florida and she has one cousin that moved to Florida. Other than that every single family member lives within 30 min of us and we see them often at family gatherings all year long. I couldn't imagine moving out of state and away from that.

God willing I will winter in Florida fish and goof off. May through the holidays with my grown boys ( no grandkids yet)! Hunt turkey and deer then bye bye for winter. However I'm smart enough to know that may change lol. Enjoy NY but not its high taxes and political lean. I'll still keep a home here for sure.

I stay because of my dad, we are best friends, and have lots of hobbies together. Second, my job, I am too far vested, and wouldn’t have the guts to start over.  I started this full time job at 18 yrs old 2 days because before I graduated, and I am about to start my 15th year in a few months.  I will have 37 yrs in at 55 yrs old, and will be about maxed out for NYS retirement.  At that point, I will see how my dad is, health wise, and sell everything, and move to northern Maine, He would move in a heartbeat at this point.  I pondered the idea of moving to Maine when I was there this summer, a supervisor title in the highway dept makes about $10 less an hour than where I currently sit in my current job.  I would be a fool to leave my job this far in, when I do retire, and if I actually do move there, I will fortunately live pretty comfortably.

Great roads, lots of public campgrounds, good hunting and fishing, public education system that is far better than most states.

Let start off by saying I just retired from the USPS after 27 years and all on the street ! winter sucks as you get older.

Will be wintering in Florida this year will see how it goes.But as far hunting goes love NY state hate the taxes and not gun friendly!

family. I left. Loved leaving and it opened my eyes to how bad it really is here for someone with my beliefs. My parents and most of my relatives have been here their whole lives. They know parts are bad, but just bitch and mention the positives. What they don't know is really how bad some of it is. Nobody does until they leave. 

but in the end, none of the things i dislike about upstate ny are enough to counter the fact that both my wife and my families are basically all here. So we moved back and don't regret it. I really don't even hate winter.

I was born and raised in NY. Left in 1976 following school, jobs and women! Ended up in Florida for many years. Got sick of the heat, humidity, traffic and crazy people. Now I’m a halfback... recently moved to the north GA mountains. So far, so good.

Five more years and I'll retire. The grandkids will be off on their own. MIL is 85 and will most likely be joined with my FIL then. I'm looking at some property outside Brevard NC. (not too far from Ashville) At the foot of the Smokies. Will still have four seasons, and even "some" snow. But I'll be seeing green grass in March, and winter won't be five months long there. Some great hunting and fishing in the area. Gun laws are sensible, and taxes are about half of what we pay here.

I did a lot of hiking and exploring in this area, when I lived in Charleston SC in my younger days. I still have friends there. This is where my bones will lie. My lifelong friend is thinking about coming too. He retires next year.

I grew up here. There is a lot that binds me to this place. But the liberals and taxes are pushing me out.
