Lawdwaz
We had to put Jenny down yesterday. 13.5 years of companionship, loyalty, love and great times...... Heart trouble and aging hips told us that the time had come. For the last couple weeks she was having "fainting spells" after very short exertions where she would fall over and go completely stiff. It would only last 20-30 seconds and she would slowly stand up and go on like nothing happened. At first it was a couple days in between "spells" and from Thursday night until Sunday night she didn't have any. Late Sunday night she had one episode and then three more yesterday. Some times she would empty her bladder during it a "spell", resulting in urine being sprayed around the room by her big old tail when she recovered. Not funny at the time but I can chuckle now........ We have great memories of her as a family dog and of a hunting dog. The dove hunts in Pennsylvania are where she shined as that's where we spent most of our field time. She did fine on duck and goose too. The veterinarian did an exemplary job with her and us, I really can't say enough about her care. My wife and I were both present, we held and comforted the old girl till her last breath. RIP Jenny
t_barb
My heart goes out to you and your family.. Such tough times... I have a English Springer that is going on 11 and has really "slowed down" the past year. He is always at my side and follows me everywhere. I can't imagine coming home from work and him not greeting me at the door. Take care and cherish the great memories.. Tom
airedale
As a long time breeder of hunting-companion dogs I know what you are going through as I have experienced the same thing many times and it is never easy. It is a matter of fact when having a dog that their lives are comparatively short and they are gone too soon, there is not much anyone can say that will make you feel better. As the old saying goes time is the best healer. My personal opinion is to jump right back in and get yourself a new pup, there is no replacing Jenny, like people all dogs are unique and one of a kind but a new pup can go a long way into getting on with things and easing the pain. turkeyfeathers
So sorry Larry. It's never easy. So many memories you've shared. The love for her and the love she's given back. Too many owners are selfish in that they don't do what's right for the animal and are selfish and only think of but themselves. You did what's right. Some day you'll catch her on the other side. Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....Author unknown...Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
grampy
So sorry for the loss of your beloved Jenny. You gave her such a good life. She repaid you with loyalty, humor, field work and companionship. Saying goodbye to our four legged family members, is one of the most heart wrenching things we do for them. They never leave our hearts, and we carry them with us until the time comes to be together again. Until that time Larry, know that she is in a good place wagging her tail. With her head cocked to the side, loyally waiting for the time when you will scratch her head again. My deepest condolences sent.

Lawdwaz
I've known about the Rainbow Bridge for a number of years and purposely didn't read it. Dog stories (that being a poem) have always busted me up bad and I knew that was one I couldn't finish. Maybe this is the time to read it? I think I'll wait a couple days............... goosifer
Sorry for your loss, Lawdwaz. All experienced pet owners know that at some point that the companionship given to them by their pets will need to be repaid with compassion and grieving when the time comes. ApexerER
I lost my best friend 2 years ago on 2/20. I hate reading these posts because I still get that lump in my throat and my eyes well up thinking about him. Non animal people don't understand that they are not only a family member but a 100% loyal companion. I know what you are going through and I am sorry. RIP Jenny....so sorry for your loss.....
